GPS Navigation. Classic or Cutting edge ?

For the 3rd year in a row, ARCHOS has equipped its flagship device with an optional GPS Navigation solution. But it’s a completely new experience. For starters, the GPS is built directly into the device. This means that you don’t need to be tied to a windshield. You can use it in pedestrian or adventure mode. There are also numerous 3D landmarks, which transform the journey you are taking into a whole new experience.

But there’s more to it with the 3D Photorealistic views of cities. It’s a fantastic way to discover a city while driving or walking through it. You’ll see the city just as if you were flying over it. With this ARCHOS 5 internet tablet, discover what GPS truly means.

WiFi Connectivity

With your ARCHOS, you want to connect to the Internet wherever you are. You’ll appreciate the easy on-time WiFi setup, even at new WiFi hot spots. The ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet scans the available networks faster, connects faster, and maintains connections to the network even in weak signal conditions thanks to the latest WiFi-N technology.

3G Connectivity via Bluetooth™

If you want to connect to the Internet truly anywhere, the built-in Bluetooth™ capabilities of the ARCHOS will allow you to pair up with most all 3G Bluetooth™ enabled telephones thus allowing you to use your phone and its data plan for fast access1. The ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet supports the standard Bluetooth™ profiles DUN (Dial- up Networking) and PAN (Personal Area Network) and automatically detects the profile of the phone selected. There’s no need to pay an extra fee when you already have a data service plan*. Tethering (Using your portable phone as a modem)

The term “3G tethering” is the idea of using your portable telephone’s data service as a way to connect to the Internet for your laptop, or in this case, your ARCHOS 5 Internet tablet.

The first thing you have to do is introduce your ARCHOS to your phone. Kind of like, “Hello telephone, I’m an ARCHOS, nice to meet you.” Then the phone says, “Hi ARCHOS, nice to know you.” They do this over a wireless Bluetooth™ connection. Once the telephone is properly introduced to the ARCHOS, they are considered ‘Paired’. This means that now when you want to connect to the Internet, your ARCHOS can say, “Hey phone, connect me to the Internet”, and good old Phone will make a connection.

Pairing 1. On your phone, turn on Bluetooth ‘detectable.’ 2. On the ARCHOS, select Menu > settings > Wireless controls > Bluetooth settings > Bluetooth and turn it on. 3. Still on the ARCHOS, select Scan for devices, then select your telephone which will be shown under “Bluetooth devices”. 4. Give a connection code, “1234” will be fine. 5. On your phone, you will now see that the ARCHOS is requesting to be paired. Type in the same code “1234”. Your phone and ARCHOS now know each other. They are ‘paired’.

Note: once paired, the small message under the name of your phone will say “paired but not connected”. This is OK. This message will stay like this, even once you have connected to the Internet. Tethering (connecting to the Internet) Now that your ARCHOS and phone can talk to each other, it is just a matter of telling the ARCHOS (only once of course) what the name of your phone’s data service is called. 1. On the ARCHOS, go to Menu > Settings > Wireless Controls > Cell phone tethering > Carrier access point name (APN) and type in the access point name (APN) that is used for your telecom operator. You can usually find the APN name in the documentation with your data plan, on the FAQ of your telecom’s web site, or you could of course call their customer service and ask. Each telecom company has different APNs and can even have different APNs for different data plans. 2. In the same tethering section, select Phone connection and make sure Bluetooth is selected. 3. In the section “Phone ID”, select your phone. 4. Your telecom operator may have given you a username and password (some telecoms do NOT require one) to access the network (this is not a personalized username and password, but a general one). If given such, tap on Username/password and enter them. Now, anytime that you want to connect to the Internet, you can either go into Menu > Settings > Wireless Controls > Cell phone tethering and turn on the option Tether, or easier yet, tap on the Bluetooth icon (1) and then the Tether icon (2) of the Power Control widget (if you have already set up this widget on your home screen)**. The status of your tethered connection will be shown as an icon in the status bar next to the clock.

Note: There is an option Wake lock, in Settings > Wireless Controls > Cell phone tethering which will tell the ARCHOS to NOT go into suspend mode after the regular pre-specified time. This way, your Bluetooth™ connection to your phone won’t be broken if you step away from your ARCHOS for a few minutes and it goes into sleep mode.

Note: Most all 3G Bluetooth™ phones with a data plan will allow you to connect to the Internet in this manner. If you have problems, take a look at a list of phones that one of the user groups has created to see if it has been tested and verified to work fine.

TV-Centric The ARCHOS DNA has always included TV one way or another. The ARCHOS 5 internet tablet is no exception to that. Thanks to the optional accessories such as the HDMI Minidock and the DVR Station, the ARCHOS 5 internet tablet will become your one and only media center, letting you benefit from the exceptional quality of your HD TV to watch movies like never before, at full resolution. And with the DVR Station, you can record your TV and thus transform your TV experience into a mobility experience. Last but not least, the ARCHOS 5 internet tablet lets you easily access over 1,000 webTV stations (and over 10,000 webradio stations).

You can also use your TV and your ARCHOS 5 internet tablet as a PC. With an external keyboard (USB or Bluetooth™), you can leverage all the capabilities of your ARCHOS 5 internet tablet and surf the web on your HD TV, or view presentations, spreadsheets or Word documents (and edit them in the near future). In a nutshell, the ARCHOS 5 internet tablet will truly transform the way you use your TV.

Ready to go

One of the most common shortcomings of internet devices is that they are generally naked. They could feature lots of useful applications, but every time, you find them without any. The ARCHOS 5 Internet tablet comes loaded with lots of them, so that you can immediately start using it.

ThinkFree Mobile: for viewing Microsoft® Office documents. This application allows you to view Microsoft® Office 97/2000/XP/2003/2007 Word, Excel®, PowerPoint® and PDF documents. A forthcoming free update will also allow you to edit and create documents.

Deezer: With approximately 35 web radio stations and the SmartRadio feature, plus access to the premium account, Deezer is the best way to listen to your favorite on-line playlists.

Dailymotion: A long time ARCHOS partner, Dailymotion is now providing its video service as a native Android application. That’s a whole new way to use it. You can browse videos by search tags or channels. Or, connect to your ‘MyDaily’ account and start uploading your own videos.

Twidroid is the industry-standard Twitter™ client for the Android platform. You can easily access the famous free social networking and microblogging service and start sending and reading tweets, and publish short URL’s and pictures.

eBuddy IM is the multi-platform instant messaging application you want to have when it comes to chatting. You can connect to all your friends from one unique application, no matter what service they are using. Supporting MSN® or Windows® Messenger, Yahoo®, GoogleTalk™, Facebook™, ICQ™, MySpace™ and AIM (AOL), this is the simplest way to simultaneously connect and chat with your entire network of friends and family. DroidIn: Connect to your LinkedIn® account to exchange information, ideas and opportunities. Stay informed about your contacts and industry. Find the people and knowledge you need to achieve your goals. Control your career online. DroidIn will let you do this directly from your ARCHOS 5 Internet tablet.

Quickpedia: Wikipedia™ can be directly accessed from the desktop of your ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet thanks to this convenient application. Whatever encyclopaedic information you need, you can get it here. For faster access to your articles, Quickpedia also saves the text of each Wikipedia search to disk, so going back to your favorite articles is fast, making it a great way to access your information, even when you are off-line.

Craigsphone: Craig's List is the de facto centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements – with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums. And Craigsphone is certainly the best way to access Craig’s list on an ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet.

Moov wraps up most of your search needs all in one place, so you can toggle quickly between your phone’s contacts, Google, Facebook, Yelp, Wikipedia, Netflix, and Dial Zero.

Super sharp 800 x 480 resolution on a big 5” (12cm) screen

The ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet is designed to give you an incredible video experience with its 5’’ high- resolution touch screen that delivers exceptional image quality, unrivalled clarity and razor-sharp details. The ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet delivers an unequalled media experience that will astonish you and truly transform the way you watch videos on the go. With it’s 800 x 480 native resolution, it is the best wide-screen format on a portable device.

No-worry video formats Your enjoyment of all the video that abounds on the Internet can get blocked due the abundance of video formats. Some video services provide H.264- encoded videos, some provide WMV encoded ones, while others choose MKV as a format. Videos can come in standard format (SD) or High-Definition (HD). It can be a maze to get through. With the extensive video format support of the ARCHOS 5, all it takes is a simple drag and drop to watch the video files you want, thus taking the drudgery out of converting video files -– if you can even convert them at all. With your ARCHOS you’ll experience your favorite movies in super quality with finer details and richer colors with the support of the most popular high definition video formats.

In addition, with the purchasable HD Cinema plugin, your ARCHOS 5 can also decode and read videos in HD WMV and MPEG2. That means playing 720p resolution, and possibly, with the HDMI mini-dock or the DVR Station, broadcast them on your HD TV.

Home Streaming from your PC

Everybody is doing it and so can you. Streaming means that you play your movies, videos, and photos on your ARCHOS, but these files are really located on your computer in another room. You don’t need to store everything on your ARCHOS to enjoy viewing it on your ARCHOS ! Your media files fly through the air over WiFi.

Through a standard known as UPnP™, the gigabytes of multimedia content on your computer travel over your WiFi and onto the screen of your ARCHOS. Whether you are upstairs, in the back yard, or in the living room with your ARCHOS connected to your big screen, all of your Windows® Media Player video, music, and photo content will be available for enjoying. Or, you can play your media files similarly over WiFi by logging into your desktop (or laptop) computer through your ARCHOS. You will see all the folders and files that you have “shared” on your PC. Select your favorite one, and start

A TV centric device with the DVR Station or HDMI MiniDock

Your high definition (720p) movies will look stunning when played on your living room screen in beautiful 1280 x 720 resolution. You could also take the portable HDMI Mini Dock along with you to a friend’s house and astound them with a hand-held player that plays real HD video (WMV-HD, H.264 HD, MPEG4 HD, 720p MKV) to their flat-screen TV.

And with all those millions of pixels from your digital camera, you’ll need a device that can send those pictures to your television in high definition. The photo rendition from the ARCHOS onto an HD TV is gorgeous.

The Internet & Apps at 1280 x 720 resolution on your television

Browse the Internet like on a PC. There will be times when you’ll really want to have the Internet on the big screen in your living room. Whether you are checking out your friend’s Facebook boating photos, streaming videos from YouTube, or checking the news, the 1280x720 pixel resolution will have everyone enjoying it together on the big screen.

And let’s not forget about the Android™ applications. With a USB or Bluetooth™ keyboard, you can even use your ARCHOS like a PC. Open up office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with the included ThinkFree™ application.

Go where you want to be

Your ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet becomes your personal travel guide with easy and instant access to local maps and points of interest. It’s easy to find your way and explore with the latest maps from Tele Atlas™ and get navigation instructions with the voice assistant.

Let your ARCHOS 5 navigate your shopping trip or help you find the nearest service station. And for those long car journeys, why not pass your ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet to the kids in the back seat to keep them entertained once you reach a long stretch of highway. Or thanks to the car mount, broadcast your music on your car sound system with the built-in FM transmitter, without any supplementary accessory. The power cable for the car mount is also the antenna, so that you only have one cord plugged into the cigar lighter.

And for the first time, you can also use your ARCHOS 5 in pedestrian GPS mode. It doesn’t have to be mounted on the windshield of your vehicle to guide you. The GPS navigation system now works independently. Of course you will have to purchase the license and the maps of the countries or continent you want, but we give you 7 days to try it out and you’ll see just how powerful and useful it is. We have Western European and North American maps for you to navigate with.

Possibilities beyond Android™ with the ‘Dual OS’

Just like a PC, the ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet can be freely programmed in alternative ways in addition to the applications that can be created for the Android platform. To have total control of your Internet Tablet, ARCHOS has opened up this device, thus allowing creative minds to program their own tablet, or create what could be the tablet of the future.

Skilled developers and programmers can now choose to switch over to a true standard Linux environment as offered by the Ångström Linux distribution. Developers can put this on their ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet devices and join other enthusiasts who are experimenting with various ideas and interfaces based on the Linux
