Media Contacts For Release January 5, 2005 6:30 p.m. PST ARCHOS JOINS MICROSOFT PLAYSFORSURE PROGRAM ARCHOS Devices to Support Windows Media Audio and Video, Windows Media Player 10 Auto Sync, and Access Broad Choice of Download and Subscription Music and Video Services with Windows Media DRM 10 LAS VEGAS, Nevada –January 5, 2005 – ARCHOS®, Inc., the pioneer and innovator in portable entertainment products, announced today at the Consumer Electronics Show 2005 that future ARCHOS pocket audio and video players will support the Microsoft PlaysForSure program and provide full device synchronization compatibility with Microsoft Windows Media Player 10. ARCHOS products with Windows Media Player 10 Auto Sync support will be available in the first quarter of 2005, starting with the popular AV420 and Gmini400. This new relationship ensures that consumers can play Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video content, including downloads and subscription music, protected with Microsoft’s award-winning Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10. ARCHOS will also offer seamless support for Auto Sync in Windows Media Player 10, which enables automatic synchronization of music, photos and video with Windows XP and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. ARCHOS introduced the portable video player category three years ago, and its fourth generation devices—available in early 2005—will provide consumers with complete and automatic synchronization with Windows Media Player 10 every time they connect their devices to the PC. Being verified by Microsoft’s PlaysForSure program and supporting Windows Media DRM 10 ensure that ARCHOS’ customers can access content from the broadest selection of online stores and take their audio, video and music subscriptions with them wherever they go. “ARCHOS is a great addition to the expanding PlaysForSure family of device manufacturers; consumer choice just gets better and better for 2005,” said Jonathan Usher, director of Windows digital media marketing at Microsoft Corp. “The PlaysForSure logo on verified ARCHOS devices will help ensure an easy and seamless experience with Windows Media Player 10 as well as great support for a - more - ARCHOS Joins Microsoft PlaysForSure Program Page 2 wide range of content and services, including MSN Music, Napster, Wal-Mart Music Downloads, MusicNow and more.” “ARCHOS offers a range of portable video and audio players designed for different consumer lifestyles and in varying price points, and our relationship with Microsoft extends the content available across all of our devices,” said Henri Crohas, chief executive officer of ARCHOS. “With our 2005 products, consumers will be able to download secure music and video from PlaysForSure-verified online stores, enjoy music subscription services and move that content easily between Windows Media Player 10 on the PC and their ARCHOS devices.” Today, ARCHOS is the only company offering complete compatibility with the broadest set of computers, audio and video devices, and home entertainment systems. ARCHOS products integrate easily with nearly all computers less than five years old, Media Center PCs, standard analog sources such as TVs, stereos and cable set-top boxes, and other digital mass storage devices through its USB Host connectivity. This ARCHOS strategy is designed to give consumers the widest choice of compatibility, connectivity and content sources available today. Washington, DC 20559-6000 December 2, 2008 Re: RM 2008-8 -- Exemptions to Prohibition on Circumvention of Copyright Protection Systems for Defunct DRM and Copy Protection-Based Stores I. PROPOSED CLASS OF WORKS We respectfully request an exemption to DMCA §1201(a)(1)(A) for lawfully purchased sound recordings, audiovisual works, and software programs distributed commercially in digital format by online music and media stores and protected by technological measures that depend on the continued availability of authenticating servers, when such authenticating servers cease functioning because the store fails or for other reasons. We also request a separate exemption for the same class of works even prior to the failure of the servers for technologists and researchers studying and documenting how the authenticating servers that effectuate the technological measures function. The technological measures at issue include digital rights management (DRM) technologies and copy protection mechanisms encoded into purchased music, videos, and software, which are sold with a set of permissions and require authentication with remote servers in order to allow users to fully exercise those purchased rights, including the ability to access the works on other devices, or in some cases, to allow continued access to the works on the same device.

  • Participatory Freedom
Participatory Freedom How the Free versus Proprietary Software conflict frames our culture and ultimately government. By Bryan Quigley Introduction Very few people think about the impact of software on the choices they make. Most are just happy when software doesn't get in their way and lets them achieve what the person wanted. When something doesn't work they usually assume it is a bug. Who would ever guess that it was intentional? Software dictates what formats digital artists write to and even how votes are counted in presidential elections. For the power software holds over society, it really isn't understood very well by decision makers. This paper looks at two ideological camps in software and how they frame the culture we make and the decisions governments make. To do this I first take a look at the two camps in software, look at the similar camps in culture, and finally how they relate to self governance. Beginnings The concept of free software is an old one. When computers first reached universities, they were research tools. Software source code was freely passed around, and programmers were paid for the act of programming, not for the programs themselves. -United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, 2001 Software started out free. It was passed around similar to scientific knowledge as most of those who had it were scientists. They shared it just like they would share scientific discoveries. Commercialization of software started with restrictions of access to the source code and the sharing started to go away. Proprietary Software Bill Gates "fired the shot heard around the world" for proprietary software and clearly has accomplished his goal of making lots of money off of his control of the source code.
