DENVER BRONCOS SAFETY CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT (2/15/12)

On why he chose Denver “It is a great fit for me. The atmosphere is good and it felt right. I didn’t have to take any more (visits), it just felt right.”

On his role “We didn’t go into details about that. Mainly to get everybody on the same page and them getting me on the same page. I’m the new guy coming in. I respect those guys and all I need is a chance to compete and that’s the opportunity I have.”

On whether he is a free safety “Yes sir.”

On being the answer to matching up against elite “I wouldn’t say that I’m the answer to that. Remember, this is a team game. At the same time, I’m coming here to contribute a small part of what I do [well] and what everybody else does well. It’s a team effort and I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just one person’s fault why someone put up 45 points.”

On his impressions of Broncos Head Coach John Fox and Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio “I knew of Fox when he was with the Giants. I was born and raised in Paterson, N.J., and I heard nothing but good things about him. Even when he went to Carolina—nothing but good things about him. It was proven once we all met today and it was a no brainer not to take any more visits and just stay here.

“Coach Jack Del Rio—he played the game 11 years, so he knows and he understands what defensive players go through, when he needs to back off or when he needs to push guys. As a player, that’s what you want. You want a coach that really understands. They definitely do.”

On his visit to Denver “First of all, the weather was nice, coming from Cleveland (laughing). What contributed to that was meeting with Coach Fox and [Defensive Coordinator] Jack Del Rio. It just felt so warming when I got here. Everybody seemed like they were on board and they were for me. I just felt welcome. Like I said, it just felt right.”

On if he talked to other teams “I talked to other teams [but] I’m just happy to be here.”

On if he hopes S plays another year “Yea, he’s a great player. Why not? I’ve been watching him since I’ve been in college. I would say him and Donovin Darius are why I wear No. 20. I have nothing but good things to say about him and I actually can’t wait to meet him. I tried to talk to him one time when the Cleveland Brown played Philly a couple years ago. He was in his zone already so it was too late to talk to him. When he gets into that game zone you can’t talk to him. I respect him and I hope he comes back.”

On what number he will wear “I don’t even know what’s available yet, so we’ll see.”

On Denver’s young safeties and “[Being a mentor] is part of it. That’s part of my job being in the league going on nine years. That’s what I have to do; that’s my duty. I think that’s where a lot of guys get confused. You have to help the younger guys out. You have to help them grow as men. I had mentors coming up. I had to show me the right ways to do it. He mentored me through my years in San Francisco and it helped me grow as a person. Whatever knowledge I have, I’m definitely going to give it to Rahim and ‘Q.’ I’m going to give it to both of them and try to help them out as much as possible so they can be successful in this league.’

On who he met with in the building “I met with everybody. I met the whole defensive staff, met John Elway, met the owner, Mr. B. [Director of Player Development] Jerry Butler, obviously I was with him in Cleveland. I met everyone. It just felt so warm. It just felt right.”

On whether he asked about Peyton Manning “No, that was far from my mind. No, I didn’t ask about that. That had no effect on whether I would come here or not. That had nothing to do with it (laughing).”

On whether he played any cornerback in Cleveland “Yes I did. I played corner. I played nickel also. I played corner, nickel and dime. I’m not the typical 215‐pound, 220‐pound safety. I’m a 200‐pound, versatile safety that can add flexibility to the defense. I think that’s one of the things that attracted Coach Fox and Coach Jack (Del Rio) to me, the fact that I can be flexible.”

On whether he played against New England last year “No, we didn’t play New England last year, it was two years ago.”

On tight ends in the league presenting a challenge to safeties “I think that’s a challenge, yes. Am I willing to take on that challenge? Yes. I have done it before. I went up against [New England TE Rob] Gronkowski two years ago when we played them. I went up against [New Orleans TE Jimmy] Graham when we played them two years ago. I went up against [San Francisco TE] Vernon Davis. I went up against those types of guys. It’s all about competing. That’s a challenge that I’m willing to take.”
