The Ancient Greeks WHO ARE THE ANCIENT GREEKS? DEMOCRACY/SLAVERY Demos = power, Kratos = people. The word “democracy” translates to “power of the people.” Athens incorporated the first democratic government. Every citizen could have a say in the actions of the government, so long as they were a male over 18 with parents who were citizens. You could not be a woman, foreigner, or slave. For a society that promoted democracy for all, Ancient Greece was inconsistent that it had a slavery class. Every household that could afford it used slaves to help with chores. Slaves were also used in factories and mines, as well as on farms and ships. These hard labor slaves had a much shorter lifespan than household slaves. THE ROLE OF WOMEN In Ancient Greek, women ran their households. If they were part of the middle or high classes, they also supervised any domestic slaves. In general, the women of Ancient Greece did not have any power or voice. They were not formally educated. Parents arranged their daughters’ marriages. They would be allowed out of the house only to attend funerals or religious festivals, unless they had special permission. Sparta provided women with an exception to this rule. Spartan women were expected to own land, to be physically fit, and to be educated. This quote tells you all you need to know about Spartan women. When going to war, Spartan mothers told their sons, “Either come back victorious, or dead on your shield.” WAR/CULTURE There were many contrasts within Ancient Greece society. This was an era known for war. -

As it happens, my address focuses on a different di- mension of the same problem. Although I will explore mostly Greek ideas, I could easily have chosen Roman ones too. In the late republic, after centuries of almost incessant warfare and the conquest of a huge empire, both Cicero and Sallust tried hard to demonstrate that intellectual achievements (in rhetoric, law, and history) had as much merit as those of the statesman and general. As Sallust puts it, “It is beautiful to do good for the res publica, but neither does it lack distinction to speak well: it is possible to gain renown in peace as well as in war (vel pace vel bello clarum fieri licet); both those who were doers (qui fecere) and those who wrote about the deeds of others are praised * This is a slightly revised version of the paper I delivered at the Annual Meeting of the APA in January 2009; the only major change is the addition of a section on the role of thoughts about peace in other Mediterranean societies. I presented versions of the same paper at the European Social Sciences and History Conference in Lisbon in February 2008, in the Classics Department at Brown University in March 2008, at a meeting of the European Network for the Study of Ancient Greek History in Trento in September 2008, at a colloquium on “Maintaining Peace and Interstate Stability in the Greek World” (organized by Julia Wilker at Harvard University), and at the University of Münster, both in May 2009. -

Lynch Jesus College, University of Oxford, Turl Street, Oxford, OX1 3DW [email protected] Abstract This paper will focus on Plato’s thought-provoking depiction of justice as special kind of harmonia (Resp. 4.443c-444a) that epitomises the best possible organisation of the soul, exploring his nuanced use of the model of lyre tunings in performative, theoreti- cal as well as educational terms. By comparing Plato’s use of harmonic imagery with technical discussions of lyre tunings and their key role in educational settings, I will show how Plato exploited distinctive features of traditional Greek lyre harmoniai to give shape to his innovative understanding of the structure of the soul and the harmo- nious, but not strifeless, relationship between its individual components. In the sec- ond part of this paper, I will look at how the model outlined in the Republic sheds light on the musical structure that gives shape to the World Soul in the Timaeus, advancing a new interpretation of its elusive harmonic organisation. Keywords Plato’s harmonics – harmonia – justice – lyre tunings – musical education – Republic – Timaeus – Philolaus Plato’s dialogues offer many revealing discussions of the ethical, political, psy- chological and educational importance that music had for the Greeks. This is especially true in the case of the Republic and the Laws, works which describe in detail the political set-up of two ideal constitutions as well as the lifestyle and ethical values embraced by their citizens. -

As in earlier issues we have not limited ourselves to epigraphy but have included a few references to important papyro logical sources (nOS 29, 134, 168, 181, 280, 300) and to the evidence provided by the documents in Linear B (nO 50). -

ON A LA TÈNE TYPE SWORD FROM THE SANCTUARY OF NEMEA An iron sword (IL 296) was discovered in Well K14:4 in the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea (today Archaia Nemea, Corinthia / GR) in 1978 (fg. 1, N). Although promptly published (Stephen G. Miller 1979; 2004) and displayed in the local archaeological museum, and known therefore for four decades now, it has received only very little attention so far (the only exception being a brief note in Baitinger 2011, 76). The present paper is an attempt to make up for this disinterest. DESCRIPTION The iron sword has a straight symmetrical two-edged blade tapering towards the point with some preserved wooden elements of the hilt (fg. 2). The measurements of the sword are as follows: overall L. c. 83 cm; blade L. c. 72 cm; blade W. at the hilt 4.9 cm; tang L. c. 11 cm; L. of the preserved wooden handle 6.5 cm; W. of the guard 5 cm; L. of rivets in the hilt 24 mm. The sword has not been weighed. The object was re- stored after its discovery; no information about the nature and extent of this intervention has been pre- served, however. It underwent a mechanical cleaning and was heavily restored with epoxy 1. A later and duly documented conservation in 2010 aimed mostly at the stabilisation of the object. The blade is bent but complete. In several spots (particularly in its upper fourth and towards its very end), the remains of iron sheet cling to the blade surface. -

Raaflaub The dramatic date of the Chinese film “Hero” (Yingxiong) is the end of the Warring State Period (403-221 BCE), in which seven kingdoms fought ruthlessly for supremacy, causing massive slaughter and suffering for the population.ii In the film, the king of Qin, determined to conquer all of known China, has defeated most of his enemies. Over the years, however, he has been the target of many assassins. Three of these are still alive, Broken Sword, Flying Snow, and Sky. To anyone who defeats these three, the king promises great rewards: power, riches, and a private audience with the king himself. For ten years no one comes close to claiming the prize. Then an enigmatic person, Nameless, appears in the palace, bearing the legendary weapons of the slain assassins. His story is extraordinary: for ten years he has studied the arts of the sword, before defeating the mighty Sky in a furious fight and destroying the famed duo of Snow and Broken Sword, using a weapon far more devastating than his sword—their love for each other. The king, however, replies with a different story: of a conspiracy between the four, in which Nameless’ victories were faked to enable him to come close to the king and kill him. Nameless indeed has a chance to achieve his goal. The king, exposed to his sword, tells him of his true aspiration: to conquer the warring states in order to overcome war and violence once and for all, to create a unified empire, and to establish lasting peace. -

Rather than constructing a political narrative of the period, I focus on the role of reshaping urban centers and regional landscapes in the creation of empire in Greece and western Asia Minor. This period was marked by the rapid creation of new cities, major settlement and demographic shifts, and the reorganization, consolidation, or destruction of existing settlements and the urbanization of previously under- exploited regions. I analyze the complexities of this phenomenon across four frameworks: shifting settlement patterns, the regional and royal economy, civic religion, and the articulation of a new order in architectural and urban space. The introduction poses the central problem of the interrelationship between urbanization and imperial control and sets out the methodology of my dissertation. After briefly reviewing and critiquing previous approaches to this topic, which have focused mainly on creating catalogues, I point to the gains that can be made by shifting the focus to social and economic structures and asking more specific interpretive questions. -

A Theology of Memory: The Concept of Memory in the Greek Experience of the Divine Master’s Thesis Presented to The Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Department of Classical Studies Leonard Muellner, Advisor In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For Master’s Degree by Michiel van Veldhuizen May 2012 ABSTRACT A Theology of Memory: The Concept of Memory in the Greek Experience of the Divine A thesis presented to the Department of Classical Studies Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Brandeis University Waltham, Massachusetts By Michiel van Veldhuizen To the ancient Greek mind, memory is not just concerned with remembering events in the past, but also concerns knowledge about the present, and even the future. Through a structural analysis of memory in Greek mythology and philosophy, we may come to discern the particular role memory plays as the facilitator of vertical movement, throwing a bridge between the realms of humans and gods. The concept of memory thus plays a significant role in the Greek experience of the divine, as one of the vertical bridges that relates mortality and divinity. In the theology of Mnemosyne, who is Memory herself and mother of the Muses, memory connects not only to the singer-poet’s religiously efficacious speech of prophetic omniscience, but also to the idea of Truth itself. The domain of memory, then, shapes the way in which humans have access to the divine, the vertical dimension of which is expliticly expressed in the descent-ascent of the ritual passage of initiation. The present study thus lays bare the theology of Memory.
