Northern Ballet's Dracula to Be Aired on BBC Four on Sunday 31 May At
Thursday 21 May 2020 For immediate release Northern Ballet’s Dracula to be aired on BBC Four on Sunday 31 May at 10pm David Nixon OBE’s Dracula will be shown on BBC Four on Sunday 31 May and BBC iPlayer throughout June as part of their popular Pay As You Feel Digital Season. After sell-out live performances and an international livestream last October, this adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic will make its television debut at 10pm. northernballet.com/pay-as-you-feel Click here to download images When theatres closed in March Northern Ballet, along with the rest of the theatre industry, was severely impacted and had to cut their spring tour after just one performance. In response, the Company pledged to keep bringing world-class ballet to their audiences through a new Pay As You Feel Digital Season. To date the season has been watched by over 200,000 people and attracted donations of over £20,000. The Company is set to face a loss of over £1M in box office income due to COVID-19 which may impact their ability to pay their workforce, many of whom are freelancers, as well as their ability to present new ballets. Whilst theatres remain dark, the Company aims to continue making their performances available online and on TV, encouraging audiences to donate when they watch, if they are able. Those who wish to support the Company can donate at northernballet.com/pay-as-you-feel Dracula was recorded at Leeds Playhouse on Halloween 2019 and streamed live to over 10,000 viewers in cinemas across Europe. -

By doing so, you have supported Live Arts which, in and of itself, is important. But more than that, you have chosen to participate in a unique program. Each year, Amy identi"es a theme and invites stunning choreographers that she thinks have a pertinent message to create dances for Bay Area audiences — dances and choreographers that we wouldn’t, otherwise, be exposed to. Last year, she brought in female choreographers to present their individual message, commenting on the lack of female choreographers in the ballet "eld. This year, she has chosen to focus on process, shifting the focus from who makes the ballets, to how ballets are being made, as a theme. To accomplish this she invited a marvelous local choreographer familiar to Bay Area audiences through San Francisco Ballet, Val Caniparoli, as well as a renowned Australian choreographer, Marc Brew. And, we can thrill to a new o#ering by Amy herself. Michael Smuin once introduced Amy’s choreography by saying: “Amy has more originality in 25 seconds of work than most choreographers have in their entire work.” The SKETCH series is becoming a staple of mid-summer dance in San Francisco... but it won’t be able to continue without your generous support. -
January 2020 Resident Choreographers
® Global Resident Choreographer Survey JANUARY 2020 Summary Dance Data Project® (DDP) has conducted an initial examination of resident choreographer positions globally within the ballet industry. DDP found that among the 116 international and U.S. ballet companies studied, a significant majority have hired men as resident choreographers. The study reveals that 37 of the 116 ballet companies surveyed globally employ resident choreographers. Twenty-eight of these 37 companies have placed exclusively men in this position (76%). DDP found that 22 of the 69 U.S. ballet companies surveyed employ resident choreographers. Sixteen of these 22 domestic companies have hired exclusively men in this position (73%). DDP also found that 15 of the 47 international ballet companies examined employ resident choreographers. Only 2 of these 15 companies have hired exclusively women (13%), although one international company employs four resident choreographers (1 woman, 3 men). © DDP 2020 Dance DATA Global Resident Project] Choreographer Survey Introduction A note about resident choreographers: The position of resident choreographer is one of the most secure opportunities for the otherwise freelance choreographer. The position offers a contract with a steady salary, the possibility of benefits, a group of dancers with whom to workshop, time, access to set, costume, lighting designers and a regular audience. Most ballet companies do not employ resident choreographers, given the expense of an additional employee and funding regular commissions. Quite often, an artistic director serves as a de facto resident choreographer, regularly creating for the company and producing new works. DDP reviewed as many prominent dance publications1 as possible and consulted several leaders of ballet companies and dance venues in the U.S. -

Whilst the Company is not performing live at this time, a selection of ballets from Northern Ballet’s repertoire plus a new original dance film will be available to watch online or on television as part of the Company’s Pay As You Feel Digital Season. Over the next few weeks people will be able to tune into 1984, Little Red Riding Hood and Dracula from the comfort of their home. The Company will also release a new dance film, Kenneth Tindall and Dan Lowenstein’s EGO plus the extended highlights of their 50th Anniversary Celebration Gala which took place at Leeds Grand Theatre at the beginning of the year. Northern Ballet are asking audiences to consider making a donation as they watch content from the Pay As You Feel Digital Season to support the Company, their people and work during these unprecedented times and the significant financial hardship the Company is facing. Lost income from cancelled performances could affect Northern Ballet’s ability to pay their workforce, many of whom are freelancers, as well as their ability to present new ballets, including Merlin which is planned to première this autumn. -

Online Panel Discussion 2020 Post-Corona Creativity Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps had to cancel the Steps Meeting Point, a day dedicated to the Swiss dance scene on 7 May 2020 in Fribourg. Instead, dance professionals from Switzerland and from a total of 22 countries followed the panel discussion «Post-Corona Creativity» live on the internet on 7 May. For three hours, expo- nents of the professional dance world outlined and discussed creative future strategies for the performing arts together with representatives from sociology and psychology. What follows is a brief summary of the keynotes, accompanied by short biographies of the speakers. The ten-minute inputs range from an invitation to joyfully manage stress through embodied practice, via close observations of crucial paradigm shifts caused by the current pandemic, to interrogations of what the dance world can give back to their com- munities. Radical Impact (working title) October 2017 Premiere Summary: In 2017, AXIS Dance Company celebrates 30 years and in respect of its past the company will be moving onwards and upwards premiering a new work by newly appointed AXIS Artistic Director Marc Brew. In his first work as AXIS Artistic Director, Brew will collaborate with Oakland based Hip-Hop orchestra Ensemble MIK Nawooj to create an original work by their lead composer JooWan Kim. The work is exploring: Identity Politics - How do people Identify? How you identify or are identified can be dangerous…. I’m only human. What does it mean to be human? Collaborators Marc Brew - http://www.marcbrew.com Acclaimed International choreographer Marc Brew trained as a professional dancer at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School and The Australian Ballet School. He has been working in the UK and Internationally for the past 19 years as a director, choreographer, dancer, teacher and speaker; with the Australian Ballet Company, State Theatre Ballet Company of South Africa, Infinity Dance Theatre, CandoCo Dance Company and as Associate Director with Scottish Dance Theatre and Guest Artistic Director with AXIS Dance Company.
