PATENEAUDE REPEAT After a nine-year drought, Maine's A1 Lord returned to the winner's circle in the New England championships held Labor Day weekend at Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton, Massachusetts. The Lord's fourteen wins, 78.6 percent ringer average, and tournament high game of 92.3% (48 for 52), were truly records of championship calibre. Al's only loss came at the hand of defending champion Bob Domey in the final round. Upset wins by Bernard Her- furth in Round 1 and Charlie Richardson in Round 14 cost Bob any chance of repeating. Third place was captured by Norm Rioux, several times champion of this event, with a 12-3 record. Yound Kevin Hollister completed a successful year by placing fourth. A new Boy's champion was crowned. Richard Forgues of Vermont began with a fine 81.2% game and continued undefeated, averaging 66.7%. Brian Smith finished second with 67.0%. Rich's brother Joe Forgues was third with 59.0%. Debby Michaud, former Womens' World champion, swept six games in a double round robin to successfully defend her title. Liz Downer finished second, losing twice to Debby, but she pushed Debby to 88 shoes in the final game before succumbing 52-42. Donna McMeniman pitched her best tournament ever, 53.3%, to capture third spot. Two-time World champion Linda Pateneaude of Maine continued her domination of the Girls' division. Janice Domey finished in runnerup spot and Brenda McNeill edged Dawna Reekie on percentage for third-place honors. 4 The Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest/Special Issue -1980 NEW ENGLAND — (Continued) The adjust pitchers were competing for over $1,200 in prize money, thanks in large part to the generous $500 contributions made by St. Pierre Manufacturing Co., Henry St. Pierre presi- dent, and by Ed Domey owner of Heritage Recreation Center. The St. Pierre company has long been one of horsehsoe pitching's most generous sponsors. The thanks of all New England pitchers is hereby expressed. Thanks to the 14 inddor horseshoe courts of Heritage, only 28 of the 172 entrants had to pitch outdoors.
