In the cemetery, used between the late 1600s and 1796, between ten thousand and twenty thousand black slaves were interred before the land was filled in and built up in 1827, alongside other urban expansion projects. Since the unearthing in 1991, the handling and remembering of the dead bodies has unraveled into a series of contestations: as the black community staked a claim to the corpses and the burial ground to extend the political awareness of slavery, immense pressure was put on the scientific community to preserve the remains and gather data within a limited time frame (about one year). Few black scholars were invited to contribute to the excavation and analysis initially; indeed, the conditions under which the bodies were unearthed and preserved was said to be disrespectful and insensitive until Michael Blakey, an African American biological anthropologist, took the project to Howard University in 1994.1 After the remains were analyzed at Howard, they were returned to Lower Manhattan, reinterred at an official memorial site, and commemorated with the “African American Homecoming” celebration. Clearly the dead slaves incite a commonsense intermingling of scientific excitement and community mourning.

PRODUCTION NOTES A Note from the Director The seed of Small Axe was sown 11 years ago, soon after my first film, Hunger. Initially, I had conceived of it as a TV series, but as it developed, I realized these stories had to stand alone as original films yet at the same time be part of a collective. After all, Small Axe refers to an African proverb that means together we are strong. The anthology, anchored in the West Indian experience in London, is a celebration of all that that community has succeeded in achieving against the odds. To me, it is a love letter to Black resilience, triumph, hope, music, joy and love as well as to friendship and family. Oh, and let’s not forget about food too! I recall each of these stories being told to me either by my parents, my aunt, and by experiencing racial discrimination myself growing up in the 70s and 80s. These are all our stories. I feel personally touched by each and every one of them. My five senses were awoken writing with Courttia Newland and Alastair Siddons. Images, smells, textures and old customs came flooding back. All five films take place between the late 60s and mid 80s. They are just as much a comment on the present moment as they were then. Although they are about the past, they are very much concerned with the present. A commentary on where we were, where we are and where we want to go. When the Cannes Film Festival selected Mangrove and Lovers Rock earlier this year, I dedicated both to George Floyd and all the other Black people that have been murdered, seen or unseen, because of who they are in the US, UK and elsewhere.

As he said, ‘However unfashionable it has now become, studying racial hierarchy and inequality provides a valuable means to extend those inquiries, to locate the edges of the human: blunt and sharp. And that, in turn, means refusing to run away from the idea of race and the forms of systematic knowledge it has enabled, but rather embracing and exploring them as an opportunity to know ourselves and our precious world better’ (Gilroy 2014: 22). Events unfolding in the six years since have only increased the acuity of Gilroy’s observation at the same time that they have shown how, in spite of all the progress also made, attempts at holding up privileges based on structural and systemic inequality, whether in terms of class, gender, or race, have only become more desperate.

It has become commonplace to acknowledge that alongside the development of a powerful labor movement and the nation’s two major political parties, Jamaica’s literature also came into its own during this period. An image from Drumblair, the memoir of Norman and Edna Manley’s granddaughter Rachel, captures the most idealized sense of the complementarity between literature and politics within the antico- lonial movement: “In addition to the party executive, the Focus group was meeting from time to time to work on the third edition. It seemed quite natural to me that the progress towards nationhood should be made culturally in one room and politically in another.”1 Norman, the lawyer turned nationalist politician, and Edna, the sculptor and literary intellectual, are shown working in different rooms, although Rachel notes that in 1955, on the eve of Norman’s elec- tion, the “groups had merged, and they were all coming and going in each other’s times and voicing opinions on each other’s subjects.

RTS Announces Nominations for the Craft
PRESS RELEASE ROYAL TELEVISION SOCIETY ANNOUNCES NOMINATIONS FOR THE CRAFT & DESIGN AWARDS 2020 London, 4 November 2020 – The Royal Television Society (RTS), Britain’s leading forum for television and related media, has shortlisted the nominations for its 2020 Craft & Design Awards, supported by Netflix. The BBC leads the way with 46 nominations across its channels, with BBC One and HBO’s hit shows, His Dark Materials receiving four and I May Destroy You garnering three nominations respectively. Sky follows the BBC with 10 nominations with Gangs of London, Brassic and Catherine the Great all shortlisted. The prestigious awards will be celebrated on Monday 23rd November on the RTS website with special guest appearances. The RTS Craft & Design Awards celebrate excellence in broadcast television and aim to recognise the huge variety of skills and processes involved in programme production across 31 competitive categories ranging from Make Up Design: Drama to Director: Multicamera, alongside the RTS Special Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award which are both given at the discretion of the RTS. Chair of the Awards, Anne Mensah, said: “The standard of television this year has been incredible and provided audiences with both comfort and escapism, as well as new and underrepresented perspectives, in what has been such a turbulent time for all of us. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the talented individuals and teams who continue to produce world class content, later this month.” The Craft & Design Awards accept entries from both individual craftspeople and broadcasters, and the juries take into consideration production difference, budget and time scale involved.

Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot.
