Unless wl' thee, my dearie, O. - ROBERT TANNAHIU reakfast on ABC Classic FM has always been a mix of the well-known and the unusual in Bclassical music. Producer Felix Hayman, who chooses all the music that I play on-air, delights in finding new and wonderful recordings that will compel our audience to stop what they're doing for a moment - and listen. "They'll love that!" he says, and invariably he's right! From Winter's Stillness is a brand new collection of some of those Breakfast listener favourites - pieces that were inspired by the coldest of the four seasons. Some of the tracks on this album capture the beautiful icy quality of winter, others evoke the warmth of winter sunlight and the approach of spring. Many are simple and eerily moving, such as the beautiful Corpus Christi Carol - sung here by Australian tenor David Hobson. The words come from ancient England whilst the music was written by Benjamin Britten in the early 1960s. This is an incredibly atmospheric piece, and David's high pure tone is as crisp as a morning after snow has fallen. Of course, you don't have to be sitting in a snowfield to enjoy this album! From a frosty morning in Hobart to a steamy sun-drenched afternoon in Cairns - we hope it encourages a happy stillness wherever you are.
