The Nakba Documents By Benny Brunner This is an appeal for financial support to start research and development on a documentary film that I think is very important to make. The film’s theme is the systematic purging, during the last two decades, of Nakba related documents from Israeli archives by one of Israel’s security services. These documents attest, among others, to war crimes committed by Israeli forces in 1948, expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, and destruction of villages. Today, the Nakba documents are locked up in a safe, inaccessible to present and future historians and researchers. I’ve covered the injustice done to the Palestinians for a quarter of a century now. Many academics and activists have utilised my films as a positive source of knowledge and inspiration for political activism and discussion. I’m seeking USD 12,500 to carry out research and development: travelling to Israel- Palestine (I’m based in Amsterdam, Netherlands) to meet and choose among potential interview partners; to check the various archives that “lost” their Nakba documents; the purged documents refer to various events, I want to visit the locations where these events took place; to film some interviews and visuals in order to put together a short scene for further fund raising, and to introduce the project to, and bring on board, potential broadcasters. The mentioned sum is based on my experience. The money will be used to pay for two return flights Amsterdam–Israel. Board and lodging in Israel-Palestine for two periods of two weeks each. Car rental for about a month plus petrol cost. Hiring (four to six days) a crew of two, camera person and sound recordist, and their equipment. Hiring, three to five days, an editor with her/his equipment to edit the material filmed in Israel-Palestine. I’m looking forward to a successful cooperation with the activist community of Boston. In case the contributions from Boston reach USD 2,500 or above, I will gladly provide the film for free for your festival, in addition, I’ll be honored to attend, on my own cost, the screening and discuss with the audience the film’s subject matter in particular and Palestine in general. The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012.

JPR The Reproduction of Settler Colonialism in Palestine Marcelo Svirsky Abstract: Critical scholarship on Palestine/Israel tends to focus on conceptualising the settler colonial practices that characterise this conflict but have failed to account for how these practices are reproduced and sustained over time. To address this gap, rather than focusing on Israel’s quantifiable strengths such as military might, the use of law, the economy, and diplomacy, this article investigates the reciprocal relations between the formation of Israeli modes of being or subjectivities, on the one hand, and the generation and distribution of settler colonial surplus, on the other. The examination of the processes of subjectivity formation in their settler colonial register on the side of the coloniser allows understating how the circuits of settler colonial power endure. HIST 3389 Problems in the Middle East: A MODERN HISTORY OF THE PALESTINE/ISRAEL SHORT BIO: Sabri Ates is an Associate Professor of History at SMU. He is the author of several articles and two books. An expert on nineteenth and twentieth century history of the Middle East, he has been teaching classes on Modern Middle East where he spends considerable time on Palestine/Israel question. Course Description: This course offers a survey of the Arab-Israeli conflict from its origins in 19th century to the present day. The class aims to familiarize the students with the historical roots of the Israel/Palestine question and its contemporary progression. Upon successful completion of the course the students will be able to identify the main milestones of the Palestine/Israel debate, including, but not limited to: nineteenth-century Palestine, the emergence of European anti-Semitism and Zionism, early Zionist settlement in Palestine, Palestinian society and its responses to the colonial settler society, WWI and British rule, 1936-39 Palestinian revolt, the 1948 Wars and their aftermath, the rise of pan-Arab nationalism, the Suez crisis, the 1967 War and the subsequent occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights, the 1973 War, the Camp David negotiations and accords, Israeli involvement in Lebanon, the Intifada and the rise of Hamas, and finally the present day conundrum. We will examine the topic through the study of its social, economic, institutional, and cultural aspects. This will allow the students to identify and analyze what kind of interactions and influences that arise in the context of Palestine/Israel shaped the socio-economic and political experiences of the people of the region and beyond.

The International Journal of Human Rights Vol. 16, No. 8, December 2012, 1142–1169 Genocide and settler colonialism: can a Lemkin-inspired genocide perspective aid our understanding of the Palestinian situation? Haifa Rashed and Damien Short∗ University of London, London, UK This article examines the situation of the Palestinians through the sociological lens of the concept of genocide. Following a recent trend in genocide studies, the article engages with the original theorising of Raphael Lemkin – who coined the term ‘genocide’. These studies have highlighted the association Lemkin made between genocide and colonialism and have applied the genocide concept to settler colonial societies such as Australia. It argues that if Israel is conceivably a settler colonial project then by implication its relationship with the Palestinian people can be analysed through the genocide lens. Whilst some academics and journalists are now tentatively applying terms such as ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘genocide’ to describe the events surrounding the creation of the Israeli state, the historical and continuing, cultural and physical, destructive social and political relations involved in the Israel/Palestine conflict is a somewhat neglected potential case study in the field of genocide studies. The objective of this article is to highlight the potential for a Lemkin inspired sociology of genocide in analysing aspects of the Israel/Palestine conflict, through a consideration of the link he made between genocide and colonialism and some of his key ‘techniques of genocide’ as specified in the seminal text Axis Rule in Occupied Europe. A signature in the book’s opening pages indicates that it belonged to Yusuf Haikel, Yaffa’s last mayor before Israel’s occupation in 1948. Hi there! I’m a school librarian and Palestine solidarity activist based in Brooklyn, NY. I am involved in the Palestinian-led Boycott/Divestment/Sanctions (BDS) movement. I have also led a couple dozen delegations to Palestine, most recently Librarians and Archivists to Palestine.
