With an unexpectedly large and incredibly diverse group we started our classes, hearing unfamiliar terms that would soon become very familiar indeed: the digital medium, the Order of the Book, manicula, the Text Encoding Initiative. At that point, I think it’s safe to say that most of us were still dreaming of a career in the publishing industry… even with the understanding that it was changing with each passing day. Last year, a group of students wanted to add practical experience to the theory and the philosophy of our classes. To this end, they decided to publish their own magazine. What started out as a small-scale exercise ended in a beautifully designed, well-curated publication they called “RE_”. The launch of RE_, timed to be held as their academic year ended and ours began, was a great success. It brought together students, faculty, and various industry professionals to meet and discuss the changing climate of book studies. This year, we are picking up the project where they left off. With a dedicated core team, a sizable group of supportive and enthusiastic classmates, and many wonderful contributors, we set out to publish a reader that would reflect our experiences during BDMS and the wider world of book studies from a variety of perspectives. Taking the concept of transition as our theme, we have 2 contributed some new design ideas, a new name, and increased the length and the breadth of the publication’s scope. If there is one thing that we have learned over the past year, it’s that the field of publishing is not the only moving target in the book industry. Digital media and mediums have changed—and will continue to change—all aspects of the production, marketing and consumption of books. Perhaps most radically, they are changing our perception of the book. With the world of the book in a state of such great transition, and with the future still so uncertain, we could not think of a more appropriate theme to address in the pages of Yapp. With this theme in mind, we have included articles and reviews, interviews and editorials, art and poems that address aspects of the past, present, and future of book studies. Our goal was to make Yapp a reflection of the diversity of our programme, and therefore ourselves; in that I believe we have succeeded. I hope you enjoy reading Yapp as much as we have enjoyed creating it. The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012.

    JPR The Reproduction of Settler Colonialism in Palestine Marcelo Svirsky Abstract: Critical scholarship on Palestine/Israel tends to focus on conceptualising the settler colonial practices that characterise this conflict but have failed to account for how these practices are reproduced and sustained over time. To address this gap, rather than focusing on Israel’s quantifiable strengths such as military might, the use of law, the economy, and diplomacy, this article investigates the reciprocal relations between the formation of Israeli modes of being or subjectivities, on the one hand, and the generation and distribution of settler colonial surplus, on the other. The examination of the processes of subjectivity formation in their settler colonial register on the side of the coloniser allows understating how the circuits of settler colonial power endure.     The Nakba Documents By Benny Brunner This is an appeal for financial support to start research and development on a documentary film that I think is very important to make. The film’s theme is the systematic purging, during the last two decades, of Nakba related documents from Israeli archives by one of Israel’s security services. These documents attest, among others, to war crimes committed by Israeli forces in 1948, expulsion of Palestinians from their homes, and destruction of villages. Today, the Nakba documents are locked up in a safe, inaccessible to present and future historians and researchers.     HIST 3389 Problems in the Middle East: A MODERN HISTORY OF THE PALESTINE/ISRAEL SHORT BIO: Sabri Ates is an Associate Professor of History at SMU. He is the author of several articles and two books. An expert on nineteenth and twentieth century history of the Middle East, he has been teaching classes on Modern Middle East where he spends considerable time on Palestine/Israel question. Course Description: This course offers a survey of the Arab-Israeli conflict from its origins in 19th century to the present day. The class aims to familiarize the students with the historical roots of the Israel/Palestine question and its contemporary progression.     The International Journal of Human Rights Vol. 16, No. 8, December 2012, 1142–1169 Genocide and settler colonialism: can a Lemkin-inspired genocide perspective aid our understanding of the Palestinian situation? Haifa Rashed and Damien Short∗ University of London, London, UK This article examines the situation of the Palestinians through the sociological lens of the concept of genocide. Following a recent trend in genocide studies, the article engages with the original theorising of Raphael Lemkin – who coined the term ‘genocide’. These studies have highlighted the association Lemkin made between genocide and colonialism and have applied the genocide concept to settler colonial societies such as Australia. It argues that if Israel is conceivably a settler colonial project then by implication its relationship with the Palestinian people can be analysed through the genocide lens. Whilst some academics and journalists are now tentatively applying terms such as ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘genocide’ to describe the events surrounding the creation of the Israeli state, the historical and continuing, cultural and physical, destructive social and political relations involved in the Israel/Palestine conflict is a somewhat neglected potential case study in the field of genocide studies. The objective of this article is to highlight the potential for a Lemkin inspired sociology of genocide in analysing aspects of the Israel/Palestine conflict, through a consideration of the link he made between genocide and colonialism and some of his key ‘techniques of genocide’ as specified in the seminal text Axis Rule in Occupied Europe. A signature in the book’s opening pages indicates that it belonged to Yusuf Haikel, Yaffa’s last mayor before Israel’s occupation in 1948. Hi there! I’m a school librarian and Palestine solidarity activist based in Brooklyn, NY. I am involved in the Palestinian-led Boycott/Divestment/Sanctions (BDS) movement. I have also led a couple dozen delegations to Palestine, most recently Librarians and Archivists to Palestine. Our group is launching a wider network of information workers in solidarity with Palestine – if this describes you, be in touch! In a zine concerned with provenance, it seems appropriate to tell you that this started as a thesis for my master’s in library science (May 2011), was turned into an academic article for the Jerusalem Quarterly (October 2011), became a series of blog posts for The Desk Set (February 2012), and is now a zine.
