What impact did Greek mythology have on later civilizations and the contemporary world? Polytheism • Multiple gods! • Their stories help to outline Greek history • The gods live on Mount Olympus and often come down to interact with humans • Sometimes referred to as “Hellenism” 2 5/1/17 Zeus • The King of the Gods on Mount Olympus • The God of the Sky and Thunder (his symbol is often a lightning bolt) • The son of Cronus (whom he killed) • Married to Hera • Father of Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Helen of Troy and more! Where have I seen Zeus? 3 5/1/17 Hera • The wife AND sister of Zeus • Goddess of women and marriage • Known for her jealous and vengeful nature Where have I seen Hera? 4 5/1/17 Apollo • Son of Zeus, brother of Artemis • God of music and poetry, truth and prophecy, healing and illness, sun and light, and MORE! • Sent Scorpio to kill Orion (jealous that his sister loved Orion) Where have I seen Apollo? 5 5/1/17 Artemis • Daughter of Zeus, twin sister of Apollo • Helped her mother give birth (after her own birth) for 9 days! • Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, and the protector of girls • Often depicted with a bow and arrow Where have I seen Artemis? 6 5/1/17 Athena • Daughter of Zeus (born from his forehead in full battle attire) • Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, math, strength, war strategy, and arts. • The namesake of the city of Athens, won the city by giving the Greeks the olive tree • Also protected Sparta Where have I seen Athena? 7 5/1/17 Aphrodite • Either the daughter or sister of Zeus • Mother of Rhodos • Goddess of love, beauty and procreation • Considered the most beautiful goddess (which caused turmoil among the gods) Where have I seen Aphrodite? 8 5/1/17 Hades • God of the Underworld • Zeus’ brother Poseidon • God of the Sea (also causes earthquakes) • Brother of Zeus • Known for his trident symbol 9 5/1/17 • Children of Gaia (mother earth) and Uranus The Titans (father sky) • 12 (original Titans) – Cronus, Oceanus, Phoebe and many more! • Overthrown Zeus and his siblings Nike • Goddess of Victory • Daughter of a Titan • Wears golden sandals and has wings • Battled the Titans on a chariot 10 5/1/17 Hercules • Divine Hero • Son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene • Known for his great strength and his great adventures • Sent on the trek by Hera to prove himself, known as the “12 Labors” • Slayed the Nemean Lion • Slayed the nine-headed Hydra • (and more) Orion • A giant huntsman • Loved and hunted with Artemis • Placed among the stars after he was murdered by Apollo’s henchman 11 5/1/17 Eros (Cupid) • The God of Love • A young man (maybe even a child) whose bow and arrow fill an individual with uncontrollable love Stolen by the Romans! • When the Romans invaded Greece in 146 BC, they adopted and renamed many of the Greek gods • Zeus = Jupiter • Hera = Juno • Poseidon = Neptune • Aphrodite = Venus • Athena = Diana • Hades = Pluto … and many more 12 5/1/17 Activity So What?
