  • Race with World Sailing! World Sailing Sustainability Education Programme
Topic 1 Race with World Sailing! World Sailing Sustainability Education Programme Supported by 1 2 Topic 1 | Race with World Sailing Welcome to the World Sailing Sustainability Education Programme! World Sailing started in 1907 in Paris and is the world governing body for the sport of sailing. The organisation promotes sailing internationally, manages the sailing at the Olympics and Paralympics, develops the racing rules of sailing, and supports sailors from all over the world. World Sailing is formed of national authorities in 145 countries as well as 115 classes of boat. World Sailing wants its sailors to share their love of sailing, while working together to protect the waters of the world. Sailing is part of a global movement to create change and positive impact, and you can be a part of this through your actions, on and off the water. To help sailors do this, there is a plan, called World Sailing’s Sustainability Agenda 2030. This plan describes changes within sailing that will help achieve 12 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and maximise the positive effect that sailors can have on the environment. The agenda was put together by a sustainability commission made up of experts and after lots of feedback it was adopted in May 2018 by all 145 member national authorities. There are 56 separate targets grouped under 6 recommendations. This education programme contributes to the recommendation to ‘Deliver Sustainability through Training’. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were published in 2015 to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice and combat climate change by 2030.

World Sailing News eSailGP Championship returns with new innovations for 2021 With less than three weeks before the eight international teams meet on the water in Bermuda for the league's return to racing, SailGP today launched the 2021 eSailGP Championship. Building on the success of the inaugural season, which saw more than 146,000 unique players take part across 55,783 individual races, fans will have a chance to test their skills piloting one of the most innovative race boats in the world in a virtual environment on new courses and with new-look boats. The Championship winner will be rewarded with an all-inclusive package to a SailGP event in 2022 and a place in the 2021 eSailing World Championship Final. In partnership with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta, the championship will feature six qualification events over the course of the first half of the season, with a spot in the eSailGP Grand Final on October 15 up for grabs for the winners. The eSailGP Grand Final will see the two gamers with the highest points after three fleet races face off in a single winner-takes-all match race. Two wildcard berths will also be available at the final for a female player and a youth player, who will be selected by a panel of judges. This initiative is in line with SailGP's immediate focus on the advancement of gender equity and its program to fast-track the training and development of female athletes for participation in SailGP. eSailGP Season 1 amassed 753,000 views on SailGP's social platforms and the league has been working to further bring the live shows to life for players and followers, including enhanced graphics, explainer videos and a reinforced expert commentary team.

News | Q1 | 2021 1 World Sailing News | Q1 | 2021 Presidential Welcome It is an honour to introduce you to the first edition of World Sailing News. Upon my election last November, I outlined my intention for World Sailing to communicate better with its Member National Authorities, Regional Associations, Class Associations, Committee members, and the hard-working volunteers that make our sport work, from the grassroots to the peak of performance. I hope that the introduction of these quarterly newsletters will help to achieve that. Open communication within our sport has always been important, but given the current climate, it is more crucial now than it has ever been. It is important that World Sailing takes the lead by sharing best practice, forming new ideas and creating inspiring content that touches all aspects of our sport. It is also vital that this material is well distributed across our community. It is a pity that we have not been able to meet face to face for so long, but I have enjoyed meeting and engaging with you directly and via our Regional Meetings. • Sailgp: HUMAN PERFORMANCE ELEVATES INNOVATION
SailGP: HUMAN PERFORMANCE ELEVATES INNOVATION PREVIEW PRESS RELEASE Geneva, 21 April 2021 – The much-anticipated Season 2 of SailGP, the global championship that has redefined sailing, commences in Bermuda on 24 April. Rolex, whose proud association with yachting stretches back more than 60 years, has partnered the sporting league since its inaugural season in 2019. The ethos and vision behind SailGP and, notably, the platform it provides for technological innovation and human achievement, perfectly complements Rolex’s perpetual quest for excellence SailGP unites world-class athletic talent and cutting-edge technology. Eight teams representing Australia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States will contest eight events held in as many countries over an 11-month period. Following the season opener in Bermuda, the championship visits renowned sailing locations in Italy, the United Kingdom, Denmark, France, Spain and New Zealand. San Francisco, United States, has the honour of closing proceedings with the Grand Final on 26–27 March 2022. Among those vying for the crown is the Great Britain team led by Rolex Testimonee and four-time Rolex World Sailor of the Year, Sir Ben Ainslie. “The sailing world was crying out for the creation of such a concept,” explains Ainslie. “SailGP is a major milestone in the evolution of yachting, but it also represents continuity. The combination of state-of-the-art technology and sporting prowess is widening the appeal of sailing.” Each event comprises a series of intense fleet races to determine the pairing for the final winner-takes-all match race. The competing 15-metre (49.2 foot), 2,400 kg F50 catamarans push the technological envelope.

The Mange Olsson Foundation has announced Peter Burling the 2020 winner of its prestigious Magnus Olsson Prize. Awarded annually to an individual who has made an indelible contribution to the world of sailing, previous recipients include Torben Grael, Sir Ben Ainslie, Stan Honey, Santi- ago Lange, Grant Dalton and Carolijn Brouwer. Peter Burling from Tauranga, New Zealand is by far the youngest winner of the prize. Despite his young age (29) Burling has an impressive CV with an Olympic gold and silver medal and nine World Champion- ship titles to his name. “It’s a great honour to be acknowledged by the Mange Olsson Memorial Foundation for this award. Unfor- tunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Magnus but his epic race in Ericsson 3 in the 2008-09 edition of the Ocean Race definitely inspired my Round the World path” says Burling. As a leader, Burling continues to demonstrate his ability to skipper and manage successful world class campaigns in the sport of sailing. He was the 35th America's Cup champion helmsman with Emirates Team New Zealand in 2017 and watch captain and helmsman with Team Brunel in the 2017–18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, finishing 3rd overall. He was named Male World Sailor of the Year at the World Sailor of the Year Awards in 2017.
