ABSTRACT : Centella asiatica and Bacopa monnieri widely known as Brahmi are considered as ‘Medhya rasayanas’ in Ayurveda meaning brain tonic. However, these plants are distinctly different. The name Brahmi, Jala-brahmi or water-brahmi is assigned to Bacopa monnieri whereas "mandukaparni", often confused with Brahmi, refers to Centella asiatica. A detailed investigation of whole plant and roots of both the crude drugs was carried out. The diagnostic characteristics includes presence of stomata, vessels with spiral thickening, rosette crystals of calcium oxalate in Centella asiatica and xylem vessels with reticulate thickening, glandular hairs, simple, round and oval starch grains, measuring 4-14 μ in diameter in Bacopa monnieri. Various physicochemical parameters were also established. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of many therapeutically important classes of phytoconstituents such as glycosides, alkaloids, saponins, protiens and carbohydrates. The present work was undertaken to generate information regarding relevant pharmacognostical, phytochemical and physicochemical data needed for proper identification and authentification of two crude drugs belonging to two different families, mainly focusing and exploring the aspects leading to common effect of improving memory. Draft Conservation Advice: Natural Damp Grasslands of the South East Coastal Plain Bioregion Ecological Community
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) Draft <Approved> Conservation Advice for the Natural Damp Grasslands of the South East Coastal Plain Bioregion 1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) was established under the EPBC Act and has obligations to present advice to the Minister for the Environment (the Minister) in relation to the listing and conservation of threatened ecological communities, including under sections 189, 194N and 266B of the EPBC Act. 2. The Committee provided its advice on the Natural Damp Grasslands of the South East Coastal Plain Bioregion ecological community to the Minister as a draft of this <approved> conservation advice. In 2014, the Minister <accepted / rejected> the Committee’s advice, <adopting it as the approved conservation advice>. 3. <If accepted> The Minister amended the list of threatened ecological communities under section 184 of the EPBC Act to include the Natural Damp Grasslands of the South East Coastal Plain Bioregion ecological community in the <critically endangered> category. Part of the ecological community is also listed as threatened under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 in Victoria, as the Plains Grassland (South Gippsland) Community. 4. A draft description for this ecological community was made available for expert and public comment for a minimum of 30 business days. The Committee and Minister had regard to all public and expert comment that was relevant to the consideration of the ecological community. 5. This <approved> conservation advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time it was <approved>; this includes scientific literature, advice from consultations, existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this ecological community. -

Description : A robust, perennial herb, 15-120 cm tall. Does not have stolons, and the rhizome is either very short or absent altogether. Stems are bluntly 3-angular, sometimes almost round, smooth, and with a diameter of up to 6 mm. The stem, leaves and sheath have numerous air-chambers. Leaves are 5-12 mm wide, stiff, deeply channelled, and as long as or shorter than the stem. Leaf edges and midrib are coarse towards the end of the leaf. Lower leaves are spongy and reddish-brown. Flowers are terminal and grouped in a large, up to 30 cm diameter umbrella-shaped cluster that has a reddish-brown colour. Large leaflets at the base of the flower cluster are up to 100 cm long. Spikelets (see illustration) are stemless and measure 5-15 by 1-1.5 mm. Ecology : Occurs in a variety of wetlands, including swamps, wet grasslands, coastal marshes, ditches, riverbanks, and occasionally in the landward margin of mangroves. -

R. moschata is one of the parents of the most important American rose class, the Noisettes, which originated from a cross between this rose and the `Old Blush' China rose in Charleston, South Carolina, in about 1811 . It fell out of commerce both in America and England in the late 1880s because of a confusion of identity with another rose. The `Musk Rose' is presumably a species rose, though it has never been reliably documented in the wild . It must have been an early garden favorite, however, because it is described in all its late-flowering, musky-scented glory in a number of early botanists' works . John Gerard's Herball of 1597 and John Parkinson's Paradisi in sole, Paradisus terrestris of 1629 both include it, and Johann Herrmann gives so clear a botanical description of it in his 1762 `Dissertation' that the `Musk Rose's' full Latin name is designated as R. moschata Herrmann, though the date of introduction is still kept at the traditional mid- 1500s. Email: [email protected] Received: 25 April 2016, Revised and Accepted: 29 April 2016 ABSTRACT It is said that the use of Bacopa monnieri (BM) for memory enhancement goes back 3000 years or more in India, when it was cited for its medicinal properties, especially the memory enhancing capacity, in the vedic texts “Athar-Ved Samhila” (3:1) of 800 BC and in Ayurveda. In the folklore of Indian medicine, several herbs have been used traditionally as brain or nerve tonics. One of the most popular of these neurotonics is BM, a well-known memory booster. Brahmi has been administered at religious institutions to help students to enhance their memory for learning ancient, religious hymns. It is also used as cardio-tonic, tranquilizer and sedative, improves the process of learning, restores memory, and enhances power of speech and imagination, diuretic and nervine tonic, antistress, for nervous and mental strain, use in insanity, epilepsy, hysteria, esthenia, nervous breakdown. It is a small, creeping succulent herb. The leaf and flower bearing stems are 10-30 cm long and arise from creeping stems that form roots at the nodes with pale blue or pinkish white flowers belonging to family Scrophulariaceae grown nearly banks of freshwater streams and ponds, paddy fields, and other damp places. -

LAWRENCE Department of Biology Lee College Baytown, Texas 77522-0818 ABSTRACT Inflorescences of Rayjacksonia phyllocephala in the disjunct Florida population system are characterized by heads on peduncles with leaves mostly reduced to linear bracts; heads in inflorescences of the Mexico-Texas-Louisiana system are immediately subtended by relatively unreduced leaves. The difference is consistent and justifies recognition of the Florida system as R. phyllocephala var. megacephala (Nash) D.B. Ward. Scattered waifs between the two systems are identified here as one or the other variety, directly implying their area of origin. In the eastern range of var. phyllocephala , at least from Brazoria County, Texas, eastward about 300 miles to central Louisiana, leaf margins vary from entire to deeply toothed-spinulose. In contrast, margins are invariably toothed-spinulose in var. megacephala as well as in the rest of southeastern Texas (from Brazoria County southwest) into Tamaulipas, Mexico. In some of the populations with variable leaf margins, 70-95% of the individuals have entire to mostly entire margins. Plant Life of Western Australia
INTRODUCTION The characteristic features of the vegetation of Australia I. General Physiography At present the animals and plants of Australia are isolated from the rest of the world, except by way of the Torres Straits to New Guinea and southeast Asia. Even here adverse climatic conditions restrict or make it impossible for migration. Over a long period this isolation has meant that even what was common to the floras of the southern Asiatic Archipelago and Australia has become restricted to small areas. This resulted in an ever increasing divergence. As a consequence, Australia is a true island continent, with its own peculiar flora and fauna. As in southern Africa, Australia is largely an extensive plateau, although at a lower elevation. As in Africa too, the plateau increases gradually in height towards the east, culminating in a high ridge from which the land then drops steeply to a narrow coastal plain crossed by short rivers. On the west coast the plateau is only 00-00 m in height but there is usually an abrupt descent to the narrow coastal region. The plateau drops towards the center, and the major rivers flow into this depression. Fed from the high eastern margin of the plateau, these rivers run through low rainfall areas to the sea. While the tropical northern region is characterized by a wet summer and dry win- ter, the actual amount of rain is determined by additional factors. On the mountainous east coast the rainfall is high, while it diminishes with surprising rapidity towards the interior. Thus in New South Wales, the yearly rainfall at the edge of the plateau and the adjacent coast often reaches over 100 cm.
