When I look out into the future I see Our people our hotels as more intelligent and sustainable. This thinking Partnerships is in keeping with changing consumer expectations. With Case studies over 4,000 hotels globally, we have a big responsibility and Corporate governance and a big opportunity to make a positive difference. A small about IHG incremental change across all our hotels can have a large GRI reporting impact. Though at times there seems to be a tension between tourism and the environment, this tension creates a space for innovation. We are focused on developing better ways to design, build and run our hotels. This means more than offsetting carbon: it is about green hotel innovation that lessens our negative impacts, whilst enhancing the guests’ hotel experience. Corporate Responsibility is an important value which is shaping how we better manage our costs and revenue. Being responsible reduces our costs, especially energy. It also makes our hotels more in keeping with our guests’ values on the environment and the community. This way of thinking is especially important as we seek to proactively meet the challenges of climate change and other complex environmental and social issues. This report will show you how we are translating our Corporate Responsibility thinking into actions. These actions are central to how we intend to deliver on our core purpose of creating Great Hotels Guests Love. I hope you enjoy our second CR Report and please do let us know what you think. Andrew Cosslett Chief Executive Tom Seddon, Chief Marketing Officer It is a pleasure to introduce IHG’s 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report. This is especially true because as of January 2009, Corporate Responsibility (CR) joins the Marketing and Sales team. We made the decision to move Corporate Responsibility into Marketing and Sales in response to corporate clients and consumer demands to know what we are doing to better take care of them and our planet. Through in-depth consumer insight and tools like our Innovation Hotel, we know you care about how we build and run our hotels and that you want to know what we are doing to positively affect your stay with us as well as the environment and our communities. We have spent the last two years ensuring that we have the facts on CR and that we are doing the work necessary to develop a sound approach. Through our brands, we now think that we can credibly begin to communicate our actions to be more sustainable. David Jerome, Senior Vice President Corporate Responsibility In last year’s CR report we talked about the journey we are on and this report shows the progress we have made. We have completed our carbon footprint, our consumer insight work and now our owned and managed hotels are reporting on their energy, water and waste. To further drive our efforts we are focusing on making a night with IHG more carbon efficient through innovation and collaboration. This report will allow you to explore the detail around how we plan to achieve our goals. I hope you enjoy our second CR report and please do provide us with feedback by emailing us at: [email protected] © InterContinental Hotels Group 2010 Corporate responsibility / Hotels in context / Overview Hotels in context Corporate responsibility home View from the top Hotels in context 2008 in review Strategic Corporate Responsibility Environment Community Economic impact Innovation Our people Partnerships Overview Travel & tourism Climate change Local opportunity 2009 Priorities Case studies Corporate governance and about IHG We acknowledge the context in which our business GRI reporting operates and we proactively address these issues in order to deliver our core purpose of Great Hotels Guests Love. Global climate change and the recent economic downturn are two of our biggest challenges. To address these issues, we are measuring and managing our environmental impacts, establishing new partnerships and working to ensure that we, and our business partners, operate responsibly. We are innovating new and better ways to design, build and run our hotels. We are also refining our policies and pioneering new public-private partnerships. IHG does these things to meet the needs of society and effectively manage our business. To ensure we make real progress with these issues, we are setting targets against all our major activities. We are aiming to make a night with IHG more carbon efficient. This objective will focus our efforts to reduce our impact on climate change and helps us to develop and run better hotels for our guests. In this section: Find out more about the travel and tourism industry and its impacts, the major challenges facing hotels and how IHG intends to respond in 2009. Hotels in context incorporates the following sections: The travel and tourism industry The environment and climate change Community and local economic opportunity How we are responding to our business context: 2009 priorities © InterContinental Hotels Group 2010 Corporate responsibility / Hotels in context / Travel & tourism Hotels in context Corporate responsibility home View from the top Hotels in context 2008 in review Strategic Corporate Responsibility Environment Community Economic impact Innovation Our people Partnerships Overview Travel & tourism Climate change Local opportunity 2009 Priorities Case studies Corporate governance and about IHG The travel and tourism industry GRI reporting Tourism plays a large part in the world economy and is an important source of wealth for many countries. It is also an industry that is facing increasing pressure to balance its economic, social and environmental performance as more attention is given to its impacts in the context of climate change, local communities and how it should respond to the current economic downturn. We believe that travel and tourism should be operated responsibly and that the long-term benefits of taking this approach far outweigh the costs. Responsible tourism is the central focus for our Corporate Responsibility (CR) programme and it will play a major role in the long-term viability of our business and of the travel and tourism sector. Hotels, as part of the global tourism industry, have a responsibility to ensure that owners and hotel general managers understand and adopt responsible tourism practices. Hotels should also work with all relevant stakeholders involved in the travel and tourism sector to reduce the negative impacts and maximise the positive benefits of tourism. The ways in which we run our business and generate value, impacts our stakeholders, especially in the areas of the environment and communities. Our impacts are driven by all elements of the hotel lifecycle, these include: Design and construction Choosing local business partners and suppliers Providing lodgings, food and drink for our customers Recruiting and training our staff Sourcing food and disposable goods The creation of waste The Hotel Life Cycle Commerical building energy Building emissions: use: 38% of carbon 39% of energy 19% of NOX 71% of electricity 52% of SO2 55% of natural gas The lodging sector accounts for: 7% of commercial floor space 7% of commerical energy use (Source: Hotel Life Cycle Chart numbers
