Website: www.leisuresolutions.com.au Email: [email protected] Abstract Ecotourism is ecologically sustainable tourism, focusing on natural areas. Its aim is to foster environmental and cultural understanding, appreciation and conservation. Geotourism is ecotourism with an added geological theme. Geotourism has great potential as a new niche ecotourism product, but will require the same disciplines that apply to other niche, ‘high value’ tourism activities. Where ever tourism contributes a direct environmental benefit to a visited location, its clients gain empathy for the holistic heritage of the area, and this reward creates enhanced customer loyalty to the operator. The Commonwealth Government’s 1994 National Ecotourism Strategy considered that ecotourists may include a mix of independent travelers, people who travel in organised groups of a scientific, educational or recreational nature, and individuals or families who are interested in an ecotourism experience as part of a varied holiday. Whilst based on limited sources, the Strategy then considered that the ecotourist appears to be well educated, professional/semi- professional, 20-50 years of age, independent and individualistic, looking for alternatives to be traditional tourist destinations and experiences, and with significant spending power. Having regard to demographic and lifestyle considerations, it is hoped that geotourism, if positioned as a supplementary, knowledge-adding product within an attractive ecotourism experience, will attract a different demographic i.e. affluent ‘over 45 y.o.’ customers. These may come from amongst geoscience professionals from within these segmentations, as well as their partners and friends, particularly through alumni and professional societies such as the Geological Society of Australia. -

Geotourism is not bounded by a protected or pristine area, but ties sustainability to all aspects of the region where people interact with the environment. This paper suggests that geotourism will emerge as a new way to view sustainable tourism even though the tourism literature is inundated with a variety of sustainable tourism definitions and niche segments like ecotourism. -

It also plays a pivotal role in finance, insurance and business services as well as having globally admired expertise in creative industries. This specialist expertise enables England to develop conferences and meetings contributing £15 billion in economic impact in 2009, plus exhibitions and trade shows worth £7.4 billion and a further £1 billion each from incentive travel and corporate hospitality (Source:BVEP). Additionally, trade transacted at exhibitions and other business meetings is conservatively estimated to be worth over £80 billion. -

GUIDE 1 Welcome to the 2020 NOPS Kit Kat Tour Torbay is a large bay on Devon’s south coast. Overlooking its clear blue waters from their vantage points along the bay are three towns: Paignton, Torquay and Brixham. The bays ancient flood plain ends where it meets the steep hills of the South Hams. These hills act as suntrap, allowing the bay to luxuriate in its own warm microclimate. It is the bays golden sands and rare propensity for fine weather that has led to the bay and its seaside towns being named the English Riviera. Dartmoor National Park is a wild place with open moorlands and deep river valleys, a rich history and rare wildlife, making is a unique place and a great contrast to Torbay in terms of photographic subjects. The locations listed in the guide have been selected as popular areas to photograph. I have tried to be accurate with the postcodes but as many locations are rural, they are an approximation. They are not intended as an itinerary but as a starting point for a trigger-happy weekend. All the locations are within an hour or so drive from the hotel. Some locations are run by the National Trust or English Heritage. It would be worth being members or going with a member so that the weekend can be enjoyed to the full. Prices listed are correct at time of publication, concession prices are in brackets. Please take care and be respectful of the landscape around you. 1 Combe Rail members' magazine Issue #1 - Spring 2016 (Combe Rail - Charitable Incorporated Organization 1164083) WELCOME! A warm welcome to all new members of Combe Rail! As of 4th April 2016, membership stands at 88, with new supporters joining each week. This is a remarkable achievement for the four months we've been in operation, and testifies to the great affection in which the Ilfracombe-Barnstaple railway is still held. Combe Rail was set up to "preserve the heritage" of this railway, and we already have several exciting plans in place (see below.) This newsletter, The Devon Belle, will also play its part in preserving the line's heritage, by collecting and publishing YOUR articles, histories, memories and photographs. Two recent Facebook groups Railway to Ilfracombe…in Pictures and Reversing Beeching - The Ilfracombe Line have produced a treasure-trove of photos and recollections - but as is often the way with Facebook, many photos are uncredited, and interesting information can be spread across separate threads. The Devon Belle will be the first regular (quarterly) periodical about the line, and all articles will be indexed, to create an ever-growing reference work. 2.5. Wixenford Bottom and Farm History Like Pomphlett Barton, Wixenford was owned by the Dukes of Bedford until the early nineteenth century but had been acquired by the Earl of Morley before 1841 when it is recorded in his freehold on the Plymstock tithe award. Although it may not have been secured immediately, in the negotiations of 1805-06, Lord Boringdon showed a particular desire to secure Wixenford as well as Pomphlett Barton, as part of his efforts to secure the complete visual envelope of Saltram, and because of the access the valley affords into the heart of the Saltram landscape (DRO, L1258M/SS/C/DL101). The planting has been identified as c1770 (NPA, 1999, 42). A narrow band of tree- planting along the road between the farm and the eastern end of the creek which became Chelson Meadow is recorded as early as 1785 [see Fig.16]. By 1809, it appears to have been planted with two more substantial strips of woodland on either side of its valley [Fig.26]. The 1869 Ordnance Survey appears to show tree- plantingalong both the centre and on the slopes although the 1881 OS does not make such a distinction. The 1869 OS also indicates a drive running down the centre, lined with trees. It certainly shows a drive on the north side of the valley running along the edge of the plantation and the open fields. This is shown to be a metalled surface on the 1881 OS. The 1907 OS indicates both the metalled drive and a less formal drive along the edge of the stream in the bottom of the valley, the two drives meeting at the northern end of the valley, where a wall crosses the valley, with a gate to allow the drive through [Fig.27]. -

A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -
