Match Reports v Malvern (H)

Floodlit Cup offers no salvation as struggles continue Ladies Gerard Buxton Ground, 10th September 2019 The Ladies safely made it through to the quarter finals of the Women’s Wiltshire Cup as they Royal Wootton Bassett Town 1 Malvern Town 3 started the defence of the trophy they won last season with a hard fought 4-0 win over Laverstock & Ford on Sunday. A report on that game is included in today’s programme. The Floodlit Cup is often seen by managers within the Hellenic League as something of an Tomorrow they are up against Torquay United in the Women's FA Cup First Qualifying unwelcome distraction. Development Team & U18 Floodlit Team The Development side are looking a useful side under the management of Stephen Yeardley. After drawing with Kintbury Rangers two weeks ago they pushed current champions Wroughton all the way last Saturday as they eventually went down 3-2 to a side who maintained their 100% record in defeating our young side. Both our goals were scored by Charlie McCuish who is looking a useful proposition after making the step up from Under 18 football. The U18 side have got their season under way, winning 3-1 away at Radstock Town in their opening fixture and then going down 4-3 away at FC Chippenham, after leading 3-1. From The Governor Hellenic League News

Good afternoon and welcome to the management, players and supporters of Virginia Water, I hope you have all had a safe trip down the M4, and hope you all have safe travels going home, This is only our fifth league game of the season in which it feels like the season has been going for months already, we certainly haven’t had the start we wanted or all hoped for but as I say it’s been four league games so certainly no drama at this stage. Myself and Matt have been working tirelessly to ensure we have the correct people at the club who conduct themselves correctly on and off the pitch in and around the Club, we have brought in Wayne Turk who is a prime example of this. A player who has achieved huge amounts in the game at a very good level, has come in and been outstanding in the changing and on the pitch. We also brought in Andy Sandell, a proven goal getter, however last week our poor luck continued with Sands having had to come off on Saturday with a sore heal, didn’t seem to be in too much pain however, Jen straight away stated he has ruptured his achilles ( myself and bully dismissed her) only for a scan to confirm Jen was correct! Well done Jen and I am sure Sands is grateful for the help you gave him and we wish Sands all the best in his recovery. On a goal scoring note we welcome back last seasons top goal scorer TJ and we are delighted. We wanted TJ back from the start however he decided to move to the Southern League but we are over the moon to have him back. He’s great in the changing room too. The Development team since Dip has taken over have been very impressive and seem to be working closely with myself and Bully which is great. We did look over on Tuesday to see the Dev side having a 12 min run! The “old school” in Dip means if you lose on a Saturday you run! I hope you all enjoy the game and I really do hope that come 5pm when I walk in the bar we have our first 3 points and a beer is waiting for me. Much Love Sam

Hellenic Premier Round-up

FA Vase and Premier Division With most of the Premier Division in FA Vase action just one game took place in the Premier Division and it was decided by a solitary goal in the 71st minute scored by Lydney Town’s Keelan Hamblett against visitors Brackley Town Saints. The win lifted Lydney into third place in the table as their excellent start to the season continued.

In the Vase, whilst we were going down to that 1-0 penalty defeat at Tadley Calleva, Binfield’s great start to the season continued as they came away from Division One East side AFC Aldermaston with a 3-1 win. Trailing 1-0 at the break three unanswered second half goals from Sean Moore (2) and Josh Helmore saw Binfield through to the next round.

There was something of a shock in another all Hellenic tie as Abingdon United, relegated from the Premier Division last season, defeated current Premier side Reading City 3-1, Mo Davies with the Reading goal.

There was no surprise at Fairford where the home side hit Division One West side Shortwood united for six, running out 6-1 winners. A cast of former Bassett players were again on the score sheet with Ben Lodge (20, Connor Thompson, Nathan Hawkins, Harvey Scholes and Dan Bailey scoring for Fairford.

Premier Division Longlevens were another winner over Division One West opponents, defeating Newent Town 2-1 courtesy of goals from Tommy Callinan and Craig Martin.

Extra time was needed at Shrivenham and even then there was no winner as the home side shared four goals with visitors Clanfield 85 and a replay will be needed to decide this tie, Jack Allen and Luke Cordery with the Shrivenham goals.

Flackwell Heath were 2-1 home winners over United Counties League side Raunds Town, Khalid Simmo and Jack Taylor with the Flackwell goals.

On Monday night Binfield and Burnham met in the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup and penalties were needed to decide the winners after it had finished 1-1 after extra time. Binfield won the shoot out 3-1 to make it through to the next round. On Tuesday night more cup action saw Abingdon United knock Holmer Green out of a cup for the second time this season as they repeated their Floodlit Cup success with a 2-0 win in the Bluefin Insurance Challenge Cup. In the same competition Ardley United won 4-2 away at Buckingham Athletic Dev. Meanwhile in the Floodlit Cup Windsor had a comfortable 5-1 home win over Thame Rangers.

Bohane heads Bassett to victory Tuesday 30 October 2018 Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 30th October 2018

TJ Bohane's powerful 54th minute header proved to be the difference as Royal Wootton Bassett Town recorded a narrow 2-1 victory against Virginia Water. The forward rose highest to connect perfectly with Dale Richards' cross and deliver a header that was not going to be kept out. And ultimately it would provide three valuable points for Sam Collier's team, who move up to fourth in the Hellenic League Premier Division table.

The game itself was a tight, entertaining affair. Early on both teams cancelled each other out - a far cry from their meeting in Berkshire in September when Bassett flew out of the gates only to spurn a number of fantastic chances on their way to a frustrating 2-0 defeat. Bassett would eventually have the first great opportunity of this meeting too when Steve Yeardley's header crashed off the post. Almost immediately, the Waters came close at the other end only to be kept out by Charlie McCready's fantastic one-handed save.

The hosts then took the lead seven minutes before the break. The ever-dangerous Rob Lincoln passed inside for an onrushing Yeardley, and the experienced campaigner - now two games off 500 appearances for Bassett - produced a great finish for his second goal of the season, and 77th overall for the club. Virginia Water were level two minutes later though. McCready did well to keep out the initial effort following a dangerous corner, but the 'keeper could do little to prevent Adam McNamara firing home the rebound.

With the game finely poised at half time, Bassett would make the decisive break early after the restart as Bohane reached nine goals for the season with his pin-point headed effort. There were chances to extend the lead too. Lincoln blazed over with an open goal at his mercy before Bohane came within inches of scoring a second header. Surviving a late scare when the visitors put over a free kick from the edge of the box, Bassett would secure the points - and set up a chance to finish their five game homestand with three wins should they triumph against struggling Abingdon United on Saturday.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town took the lead just after the half hour mark and that goal was all that separated the two sides at the break. Radstock Town got themselves back on level terms through substitute Josh Singtothong on 55 minutes. Just as it looked like the points would be shared, Bassett regained the lead a minute from time and then ensured all three points when they were awarded a penalty in the second minute of injury time which was safely put away. On target for last season’s runners up were Harvey Flippance and Jake Small, who both scored twice, whilst for Wootton Bassett the goals came courtesy of Michael Gilder, Jed Phillips and Ben Chin. 12 37

Ladies make successful start to County Cup defence Royal Wootton Bassett Town 4 Laverstock & Ford 0 Sunday 15th September 2019 Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies began the defence of their Wiltshire County Women's Cup title with a 4-0 first round victory against Laverstock and Ford. While not as problematic as their 2-1 semi-final triumph against the same opponents en route to the final last season, they were nevertheless tested against by Laverstock, who twice hit the woodwork. However, two late goals ensured the result appeared to be a relatively comfortable one and guaranteed a place in the quarter finals for Bassett. Bassett went in front after twenty minutes, Hayley Huckin's goal being reward for an early period of the game that the home side controlled. Hannah Gulliver and Sophie Smith had both shot wide in the opening minutes before the latter saw a shot that appeared destined for the top corner snatched out of the air. The Laverstock 'keeper then fumbled a Huckin effort before the visitors were just able to scramble the ball away. However, Huckin eventually broke Laverstock's resistance. After good play out from the back, a deft touch from Smith fell to the forward, who coolly slotted home. Huckin and Madeline Elliott then had further chances, none of which was put away before Amy Sanger struck the bar for Laverstock, with the resulting rebound being blocked by Alice Farnell. That was a let off for Bassett, who knew that a second goal was needed. And that arrived ten minutes into the second half as Gulliver tucked the ball away at the far post after the Laverstock defence failed to deal with a Laura Jefferies cross. The game still wasn't safe though. Bassett continued to have opportunities, with Huckin in particular a consistent threat. Yet that final finish was lacking. And with twenty minutes to go Laverstock again came close to opening their account. Farnell tipped a free kick onto the bar before the rebound was headed onto the post. However, with quarter of an hour remaining any nerves Bassett felt were settled when Huckin pounced on a loose ball in the box and saw her shot, while saved, trickle over the line. Then with five minutes to go, Eloise Hayward tapped in at the far post following a fine cross from Lauren Kayll.

Match Report v Tadley Calleva (A), FA Vase The Non-League Paper

Bassett pay late penalty in Vase exit Last week while frantically working towards yet another print deadline, I came across a Barlows Park, 14th September 2019 story which certainly made me smile. As they jubilantly travelled back from their FA Vase victory at Bacup Borough two weekends ago, the players and staff at Grimsby Tadley Calleva 1 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 0 Borough found themselves in a scenario fit for a Hollywood thriller as their coach ended up perched on the edge of a 45 foot ravine! They had only just set off on the journey Any hopes Royal Wootton Bassett Town had of a length run in the Buildbase FA Vase were from The Borough’s West View home when their coach driver suddenly took a rather extinguished as a late penalty saw Sam Collier's side defeated 1-0 by Tadley Calleva in the perilous wrong turn. competition's second qualifying round. “When it crashed we started singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning!’ to the Big winners away against New College in the previous round, their visit to the Wessex driver,’” said Grimsby boss Daniel Barrett. League Premier Division outfit's Barlows Park ground was always going to be a much more “Then the bus tilted and we started to realise that things may be a bit more serious! tricky affair. But Bassett matched their opponents, who like their visitors had so far failed to ”We had stayed in the bar after the match for a little bit and were still very much at the find form in the league. beginning of the trip home.”

A tight contest ensued with chances at a premium for both sides. However, the tiewas Nevertheless the group was determined to make the best of the situation and set out in eventually settled in the closing minutes when the hosts were awarded a penalty, which search of a pub. However, in deepest rural Lancashire, this proved more difficult than Connor Thorne dispatched. For the fifteenth time in nineteen seasons, Bassett's expected. Barrett continued: “We ended up walking about five miles! participation in the national competition therefore disappointingly ended in the qualifying stages. “We stopped off at a petrol station and bought some drinks. We had our portable speakers and were singing all the way, I don’t really know what the local residents were thinking. “When we eventually found a pub the people running it were so helpful and said that we could stay there for the night. “It was a pretty surreal evening but we certainly made sure that we made the most of the situation. “Thankfully we are at home in the next round so there won’t be a repeat!”

While this represents a rather funny tale which will certainly be remembered by those involved for a long time, I think it also demonstrates one of the best things about playing football at this level. In an age of over protected and out of touch professionals, this kind of story would never have happened in the higher divisions. A huge part of Non- League football is about enjoyment and about getting away from the rigours of another working week to play the game for the love of it with people that you get along with. Of course, everyone wants success and to move up the pyramid but Non-League football also has that lovely human element of regular people enjoying their weekends while also trying to fulfil their dreams in the game. It is for these quirky tales why people like myself have come to love Non-League football and everything that it represents.
