Kath had already told me that she had seen that we were going to miss the junction that morning, but knew that no amount of ‘nudging’ or arm-waving was going to help in the circumstances. I narrowed the options down in that we only required rider/pillion - as opposed to rider/pillion/rider - voice capability. We also had no requirement for mobile phone or MP3/audio functionality. What was essential was that the chosen system was compatible with my TomTom Rider 2, that it was ‘wireless’, and that it was affordable. As I had gone 46 The BMW Club Journal • March 2013 through the trauma of taking a scalpel to the System 6 ‘skirt’ and lining in order to fit the original Scala Rider headset, and I knew that this unit worked well with the TomTom, I decided to see what options Cardo offered in the way of intercom systems that met our requirements. The logic was that if one Cardo headset fitted the helmet and worked with the TomTom, then they all would. A quick ‘Google’ pointed to the Cardo Scala Rider TeamSet PRO as fitting the bill – even though it came with functionality that we would probably never use. ‘Try-before-you-buy’ isn’t an option with this kind of kit, so I looked for the best price (about £150 at the time, but I’ve seen it as ‘low’ as £120), took a deep breath and ordered the system.

What’s in the Box? Quite a lot actually, including: two headset units, each comprising a helmet clamp with two low profile speakers and microphone; two rechargeable and demountable Bluetooth transmitter/receiver units incorporating on/off, volume and ‘pairing’ controls; carry
