We pride ourselves on taking the worst, most horribly depraved felons of our age, and through a number of revolutionary techniques, reconditioning them to be mild, submissive, truly penitent individuals. For a very limited time, Mrs. Evangeline Mallard, President of the Prison Board of Inspectors, invites you to join us at Mount Hope for a demonstration of rehabilitation through the beauty of poetry! And we are especially pleased to be joined – at least until his court date – by the very famous Mr. Edgar Allan Poe! So witness the power of true criminal reclamation here at Mount Hope Penitentiary! Thomson A Thesis in the Field of English for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2018 Copyright 2018 Jennifer J. Thomson Abstract This investigation examines the origins and development of Edgar Allan Poe’s aesthetic theory throughout his body of work. It employs a tripartite approach commencing with the consideration of relevant biographical context, then proceeds with a detailed analysis of a selection of Poe’s writing on composition and craft: “Letter to B—,” “Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales,” “The Philosophy of Composition,” “The Poetic Principle,” and “The Philosophy of Furniture.” Finally, it applies this information to the analysis of selected works of Poe’s short fiction: “The Assignation,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Oval Portrait,” “The Domain of Arnheim,” and “Landor’s Cottage.” The examination concludes that Poe’s philosophy of art and his metaphysics are linked; therefore, his aesthetic system bears more analytical weight in the study of his fiction than was previously allowed. -

DESCRIPTION: This course studies the varied work of Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1845). A master of a number of literary genres—poetry, short fiction, and criticism, to name but three—Poe remains one of the most PoPular and PerPlexing figures in American literature. More than two centuries after his birth, he continues to exert an outsize influence on a number of literary traditions, including detective fiction, horror, science fiction, hoax, humor, and satire. Over the course of the term we will read many of Poe’s tales, a good deal of his Poetry, select Pieces of criticism, and his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket (1837). In measuring Poe’s achievement, we will gauge his influence on subsequent generations of writers, including Charles Baudelaire, Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Roger Corman, Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, and Mat Johnson. We will also catalog the strange Places that Poe shows uP in contemporary culture: midnight movies, rock operas, episodes of The Simpsons, even NFL franchises. Finally, the course will take full advantage of UT’s Harry Ransom Center, which houses one of the world’s largest collections of Poe materials. This course will: study in dePth the work of one of the most PoPular and PerPlexing figures in American literature; model methods of literary and cultural interPretation; and help students to imProve their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills. -

The assumption is that human have two forms in 19th century. From his first short story Metzengerstein in 1832 to his different periods, which is similar to caterpillar and butterfly, and death in 1849, he had written over 60 short stories, of which death is death is just a change of forms, so our experiences throughout our life his constant focus. This paper, by studying his short stories are preparations for glorious, infinite and immortal future. This work comprehensively, explores the expression and reasons of death in his is not like a novel, but like a scientific experiment. In this short novel, works. Death theme in the stories is the object of study, so this paper he explores truth that goes beyond life and sense and considers things will study his short stories as a whole. which may still be found after death. In this study I examine the profound impact the advent of photography had on Poe's writing. In an 1840 article for Alexander's Weekly Messenger Poe called photography "the most important, and perhaps the most extraordinary triumph of modern science." Through a close study of selected fiction, essays, and letters I argue that Poe was the first writer to explore the myriad possibilities of the newly emergent photographic world. Abstract THE DEATH OF WOMEN IN WORDSWORTH, BYRON, AND POE by Gina Kang December, 2009 Chair: Anne Mallory, Ph.D. Major Department: English This thesis explores and analyzes the portrayal of women, death, and suffering through the experiences of male speakers in William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, and Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry. These poets create bereaved male speakers who mourn the loss of a dead woman in order to present themselves as male poets who are capable of showing intense emotions. While all three poets construct speakers who express suffering, each does so differently, each highlighting a different idea about the relationship between death and nature.
