William J. Herman 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time This Week at Queen of Peace This Wednesday we begin the annual observance of Lent. It is the spe- cial season for the ascent to the holy mountain of Easter. Through its two- fold theme of repentance and baptism, the season of Lent disposes the faithful to Sunday, March 2 celebrate the paschal mystery. We are to listen to the word of God and devote our- 10am Mass selves to prayer and repentance, thus renewing our baptismal promises. Tuesday, March 4 8:30 am Mass in chapel & rosary Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive on Holy Perpetual Help Novena Thursday. Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence in the Church. Simply put, Lent is a time to take inventory in one’s life and see how one is prepared Wednesday, March 5 ASH WEDNESDAY to meet God face to face. It is a time to repent for one’s sins; tell God one is sorry for 8:30 am Mass & distribution of offending him and his people; ask for mercy and begin anew with a determined atti- Ashes in church tude to place him foremost in one’s life. We Friday, March 7 are finding worthy homes for each. I want to share with you a note received this 8:30 am Mass in chapel & & rosary week. “Dear Father Herman, I am Elizabeth Puleo Tague, the daughter of the late 11 am World Day of Prayer service - Jean and Peppino Puleo, who were long-time members of Our Lady Queen of Peace in church, reception to follow. I am writing to- Saturday, March 8 day to thank you for ensuring the cross’s safe transfer to St. Ambrose. It has been 3:15 pm - Confessions hung in the vestibule of the church, over the memorial and candles for the poor and 4pm—Weekend Mass in front of some beautiful stained glass windows. Honestly, it looks like it was custom -made for this location. Fr. Pelc included an historical write-up about the cross in our church newsletter and, since that time, a number of former Queen of Peace parish- ioners have approached me, saying that they remember that cross and how nice it is Lent to see a part of their original home parish now installed at St. Ambrose. Also, I re- Begins cently sent a letter to Fr. Complo and made sure that he was aware of your kindness March 5 in arranging for the transfer of the cross. He was so happy to hear this news, as he was obviously instrumental in helping my parents select this particular piece for the ASH church. Please know, Father, of my deep appreciation for your effort in transferring WEDNESDAY the cross. It is a terrific part of my parents’ legacy. Thank you again. Know that I will keep you in my prayers. Gratefully in Christ, Elizabeth.” Mass & Distribution of Ashes As you can see, artifacts are being respected and are being placed where they are in church appreciated and their history is important. You Are Creating a Brighter Future BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION / ANNUAL REPORT / FISCAL YEAR 2019-2020 My Thanks for Your Generosity and Commitment Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of the Bethlehem University Foundation. Your gifts are a testimony to your vision — that of creating a brighter future. With your support of Catholic education, you are forming the future peacemakers of the Holy Land. I am grateful for your generosity. In this Annual Report, I invite you to take a closer look at the lasting difference your gifts make and encourage you to learn more about how endowed gifts at the Foundation create a perpetual and sustainable future for Bethlehem University. In this report you will discover that the past year was filled with celebrations and successes: • New endowed funds established by Lieutenancies, Knights, and Dames of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. • Award winners from our November 2019 reception, and the welcoming of Cardinal O’Brien as a Patron. • Endowed scholarships created by several families to honor their loved ones. • Expressions of gratitude toward our Board, Patrons, and donors this fiscal year. • Charts showing income and expenses for Bethlehem University Foundation for the fiscal year 2019-2020. Early in 2020, the world united in the fight against an invisible enemy, COVID-19. The city of Bethlehem was put on lockdown in early March, but with your critical support, the University successfully completed the spring semester and summer session with online learning. Your generous response provided the means for the Foundation to offer extra help to the University in its time of desperate need.

  • Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D. Statement on the Proposed 'Don't
Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D. Statement on the Proposed ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ Legislation (01.VI.10) In a response to a request from the Chiefs of Chaplains of the Armed Forces I communicated some considerations and concerns regarding the proposal to change the existing legislation regarding persons with a homosexual orientation in the military. In fulfilling my role as the chief shepherd of Catholics in the United States Armed Forces, I have had the opportunity of visiting many installations in the recent past. A number of chaplains and commanding officers have expressed concerns about the effects of a change. There is a request for guidance. The teaching of the Catholic Church is clearly expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: 2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity,140 tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered."141 They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. 2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.

  • ANNUAL REPORT 2016–2017 to Strengthen the Lives of Those in Need by Giving Help That Empowers and Hope That Lasts
RestoringHope ANNUAL REPORT 2016–2017 To strengthen the lives of those in need by giving help that empowers and hope that lasts. Dear Friends, With a profound sense of gratitude, it is my joy to present this annual report for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. Your support of this ministry of hope and compassion is a powerful testament to the conviction that we have a responsibility to care for one another with kindness and love. “Blessed are the open hands that embrace those in need and helps them: they are hands that bring hope,” says Pope Francis in his Message for the First World Day of the Poor. As we have received such saving hope ourselves in the merciful love of Jesus, he adds, so are we called to turn to “all those who stretch out their hands and plead for our help and solidarity. They are our brothers and sisters, created and loved by the one Heavenly Father.” As you read this annual report, you will see how generously and fruitfully that call has been answered in our local Church. Behind all the financial figures and data are the faces of so many people whose lives are brighter today thanks to the dedicated efforts of Catholic Charities and the benefactors who make it all possible. Through the 58 programs operated in this area by this remarkable ministry, each year more than 142,000 women, men, and children from every background find much-appreciated material and spiritual help, including food assistance, housing, health care, immigration and refugee assistance, services for persons with developmental disabilities, job training, and more.

Bethlehem University Foundation SECURING BETHLEHEM UNIVERSITY’S FUTURE // ANNUAL REPORT 2019 Bethlehem University Foundation Dear Friends, Thank you for your support of the Bethlehem University Foundation. Your generosity helps to create a bright future for the students and the community in the Holy Land. You make peace possible through education.
