WWII Alumni Reunion and Personal Histories Interviews/Recordings WWII Alumni – We Need Your Votes and Feedback

The 2007 WWII Alumni Reunion will bring us a giant step closer to capturing the individual personal experiences of our UTN- ROTC shipmates during World War Two.

For the first time, this reunion will offer individual video recorded interviews of WWII alumni on their wartime experiences. (You will remember that during last year’s reunion we had a group recording of 18 WWII alumni who attended a special record- ing session.)

And for the first time, the UT Institute for Military History Studies, part of the University’s Center for American History Stud- ies, will conduct the interviews. We’re having video recording. The Institute will then archive them, along with last year’s audio and other official record data, to make them available for future research and to use excerpts eventually in a web-based historical presentation. The Institute hopes to make this the first chapter in a book about UT ROTC members who have served their country in time of war.

Wow!! And that is on top of an expanded plan of casual, purely social settings where alumni can visit prior to the traditional Friday dinner social at the Austin Country Club. Saturday the Board and General Membership will meet, as in past years, followed by a BarBQ.

In This Issue The Drury Inn & Suites will be the Alumni Reunion hotel for all alumni from WWII classes to the present. (See the Reunion Activities article on page X for details) We have reserved the same room we used for the group interview session last year for WWII ALUMNI REUNION ...... 1 gathering in a casual social setting with refreshments – a hospitality room. Directions to Texas Military Forces Museum Camp Mabry, Austin Texas

Military ID or other ID is required by each person in a car to gain access to Camp Mabry. From MoPac (Loop 1) exit on 35th Street and go west approximately 0.75 miles. The only gate for entrance is on your right. What used to be the main entrance, just after you get on to 35th Street, has been closed since September 2001. Enter the gate and go to the end of the street (Maintenance Drive) where it dead-ends (approximately 0.7 miles) into Division Drive. Turn right and go just under 0.1 mile to a 4-way stop. Turn right on to General Mabry Drive and go approximately 0.8 miles; the Texas Military Forces Museum is on the right. Parking is available in front of the museum and across the street from it. General Mabry curves around the parking lot for the Base Exchange. Crow's Nest Update

The Crow’s Nest is on track to open in August, 2008. The Alumni Crow's Nest Committee was appointed by our President, Fred Moon, to facilitate battalion members in their efforts to establish a cooperative living arrangement offering room and board to battalion members at competitive prices. The Committee (David Wells, Dennis Olson, Jack Ritter, Fred Moon and Bob Brown) met in July to establish a timeline of events to achieve the opening date. A core group of battalion members exists ready to move the project forward. By reunion time, the core group, working with the committee, should have a plan in place to reopen the Crow’s Nest in 2008. An update will be provided at the general assembly meeting at the annual reunion on Saturday, September 29. Be there. - Bob Brown, Class of ’52 Talk About Scholarships

This year the Midshipmans Foundation will award $23,000.00 in scholarships to deserving members of the Battalion who are recommended by CAPT Salazar and the staff. The Midshipmans Foundation is your Foundation and the scholarships come from your generosity and willingness to give back to the organization that is responsible, in part, for many of the good things in your life. Five years ago our scholarship grants were only $4,000.00. This is a stunning increase in financial assistance to battalion members, and is perhaps unique in all campus NROTC programs.

There is still much remaining to be done. Our endowment fund is presently about $650,000. Our goal is to increase that fund to $1,000,000. With a fund of that size we could award $50,000 or more in scholarships every year!

Please include the Midshipmans Foundation in your giving plans this year. Contributions should be mailed to our Treasurer, Bob Gartner, 6908 Bayridge Terrace, Austin, TX 78759. Contributions are deductible and you will receive a receipt for your tax records. - Bob Brown, Class of ’52
