AVital Legacy

The 2012 World University Netball Championship in Cape Town was preceded by INF’s International Talent Identified (ITID) Umpire Seminar, which ran from 28th June to 1st July. Hosted by experienced former international umpire, and INF panel member Bill Alexander, the seminar was an element of the legacy programme of the 2011 Mission Foods World Netball Championships. The seminar provided an opportunity for International Netball Federation umpires to come together, share practice, and learn from leading experts from a range of important disciplines. Integrating the seminar with the World University Netball Championship also enabled delegates to apply their skills to an international tournament. Seminar delegate and Lesotho ITID umpire Chakatsa Lephole explained the challenges of preparing to umpire top-level international matches, and the tremendous opportunity the seminar offered: “I have been watching international games to prepare myself for this assignment, more especially the Australia and New Zealand Championship. At home I am mostly challenged as an umpire, because there are no games that measure up to international standards that I can actually use to prepare.” The 29-year-old, who was selected to umpire the July international test series between World South Africa and Northern Ireland, said he had been working hard, following the INF training University programme to ensure he was physically fit Netball to meet the demands of umpiring at the top level of international sport.
