PRESIDENT REPORT NICK HODGERS

The past 12 months have seen significant change at both Board and operational levels.

After many years as a Director and a significant contribution to the sport, Peter Waterman decided not to stand for re - election at the 2014 Annual Conference. On behalf of the Board, my thanks to Peter for hi s time and input during his time on the WPNSW Board. Daniel Bartels was elected to the WPAL Board at the WPAL Annual Conference and resigned from the Director Metropolitan position just prior to the 2014 WPNSW Annual Conference, again my thanks to Daniel f or his valuable input during his time on the WPNSW Board. Bec Rippon was elected to the Director’s position vacated by Peter Waterman and Marg Kaye was elected to the Director Metropolitan position vacated by Daniel. Both Bec and Marg bring significant exp erience in areas of sport development and governance respectively, to the Board.

Following the appointment of Tim Hamill to NSWIS, Chris Dyson was appointed to the role of Sport Development Manager. This appointment and change in structure of the role to be solely “owned” by WPNSW, (previously time was divided between WPNSW and NSWIS), has resulted in Chris initiating and overseeing the introduction of a number of programs. The programs including the WPNSW Academy pilot will be able to be implemented in al l areas of the State, to increase involvement and provide for the development of water polo across the many areas where opportunities have been identified.

Further changes to office staffing occurred during the year resulting in David Whittaker being a ppointed to the CEO role. David has worked tirelessly since commencing in the role, developing and re - establishing relationships in the water polo community, as well as overseeing the initial restructure of the operations of the office. David’s extensive input and contribution has been outstanding and would be immeasurable by the majority of our members. I would like to congratulate David and his staff on the exceptional work that has been carried out conducting the operations of the WPNSW office. The achi evements, during a period in which there were significant changes in staff and experience, are enormous and in numerous areas which are too many to list.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT DAVID WHITTAKER

It is with pleasure that I present a report on the activities of Water Polo NSW (WPNSW) for the 2014/15 year.

I would firstly like to thank the Board for their support and guidance since coming into the role in late 2014. The year has been challenging from an operational perspective with a complete change of staff and a restructure of the business model so as to support future financial viability.

As part of the change of focus and direction of the organisation, a Strategic Plan was introduced to Clubs at the inaugural Future Directions F orum held in September. The Board undertook a comprehensive planning process incorporating a strategic alignment with Water Polo . As part of this WPNSW approached the coming year not just simply to administer the sport but to also look towards expansion of development pathways and greater participation opportunities deemed vital for sport.

After an initial period of assessment a reorganisation of operations of the WPNSW Office were undertaken with Ashleigh Kaesler and Jess McNamara engaged in administration support roles with the respective responsibilities of Competitions and Events Co - ordination. With the introduced of the Metropolitan Academy Kyle Alp took the responsibility of program co - ordinator.

Chris Dyson joined WPNSW in July in a re vamped role of Sport Development Manager. I congratulate Chris on his passion and commitment to the role. During the year Chris has implemented a number of changes to procedures and initiatives to the state pathway programs. In addition evaluation work has commenced on possible participation opportunities. Some of the new Sports Development initiatives introduced during the year are: -

1. WPNSW Academy – skills program designed in partnership with NSWIS and University of Technology . The Metro program co mmenced late January 2015 and now has close to 200 players from U14 - U18 age groups involved in pool and gym training sessions spread over 5 mornings (7 sessions) each week. The program also incorporates a coaching development element and is planned to be e xtended to encompass the Regional Academies of Sport during the following year. 2. Premier Sporting Challenge – a NSW Government funded skills development program designed for public Schools within NSW. 3. Regional Representative Pathway – redevelopment and exp anded for U13 - U16 age groups which essentially doubled the number of regional athletes involved in NSW squads & teams. 4. State Representative Pathway - extended for U16 age group to have 10 teams selected and hosted a training camp + international carnival involving New Zealand for the Born 2000 (U15) group. 5. Sport Development Internship – program designed for University students to gain real world experience and provide WPNSW Office with additional resources. 6. U13s Development Camp – expanded to accommodate 220 athletes over two weekends 7. Specific Skills Clinics – conducted for Centre Forward & Centre Back

WATER POLO NEW SOUTH WALES 2014/2015 Annual Report 6

I wish to express my appreciation to all WPNSW staff on their tireless effort and support in an ever changing and evolving environment.

In an effort to develop the functions of the Board, Directors also participated in training conducted by Australian Institute of Company Director which was funded by NSW Sports & Recreation.

During the year the following areas of operations have been identified as a focus for continued development. 1. Communication & Co - ordination 2. Participation Growth 3. Commercialisation 4. Player & Officials Development 5. Sustainability of Clubs and WPNSW 6. Connection with Schools & Regional Associations

The financial position of the orga nisation is now in a positive position with a number of issues from previous years overcome through trading. There are however challenges ahead with ever increasing pressure of costs and the lack of any real capital to implement growth.

From a competit ion perspective the Summer and Winter seasons were once again highly competitive with continued strong participation in all grades and competitions. I would like to acknowledge and express thanks to all referees, coaches, players and the many enthusiastic volunteers from all Clubs that enable competition to function successfully on a weekly basis.

Congratulations to the many athletes who gained selection in Australian teams plus those who represented NSW at National Championships. A complete list is cont ain ed herein.

Finally, I would like to extend my appreciation and thanks to all Club officials for your input over the year. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and for you r tireless work to the benefit of the sport.

Upon reflection, it is pleasing to be able to acknowledge that Water Polo NSW is in a strong position to explore the various opportunities that exist. Looking forward to an exciting year ahead .

David Whittaker (Executive Officer)

SPORT DEVELOPMENT MANAGER’S REPORT CHRISTOPHER DYSO N

This year NSW has continued high standard of achievements in the pool plus introduced a number of new initiatives in the area of Sport Development. The areas to highlight are:

 Establish the state identified athlete and promote a clear pathway for them.  Identify Coach and Officials and provide platforms for their development.  State Team program redevelopments.  School development programs.  Strategic Partnerships  Internship Program.  Range of New Events & Programs

A state identified athlete is someone who is ranked outside National Identified program (approximately 5 th to the 45 th ranked ). I beli eve this tier of athlete requires a clear development pathway. While this pathway is still developing, a number of initiatives commenced during this year, and they are:

 The Water Polo NSW Academy. This is a skills based program, implemented to supplement athlete s current training regimes and prepare them for representative water polo.  Increased participation in junior NSW squads and teams.  U16 Carnival . In July 2015 WPNSW hosted a training camp & tournament involving New Zealand teams for the U16 (born 2000) age group. New Zealand sent 4 National teams to Sydney to participate in this tournament and NSW consisted of 6 teams including Country Development squads .

Identifying coaches and officials and providing platforms for their development is a major component in the development of water polo. The following initiatives assisted WPNSW to achieve this:  Recommencement of Referee courses.  Increased refereeing feedback at WPNSW tournaments & events.  Establishment of the Coaching Development Pathway at WPNSW A cademy .  Increased coaching feedback at a NSW level.

There a re two main School Water Polo Development Programs. The first is the ‘Premier Sporting Challenge’ (PSC) and the 2 nd being the ‘Sporting Schools Program’ (SPS). The PSC has a number of different levels of development and is limited to public schools, and ta rgets children year 5 – year 12. The SPS program is still in its preliminary stages however there are two test programs schedule to commence in NSW in 2016.

WATER POLO NEW SOUTH WALES 2014/2015 Annual Report 8

The WPNSW State Team Pathway in the junior ages undertook a number of redevelopments. These redevelopments were implemented to expose more athletes to the elite pathway, and develop more athletes in an elite environment.

 U12s: Commenced the first ever WPNSW U12 Festival.  U13s: Extended the U13 Development Camp to 2 camps over 2 different weekends, and up to 200 hundred athletes.  U14s: Selected a Country Development Squad to attend the U14 TAP Camp. The TAP athletes conducted their usual program of trainings before the annual East Coast Challenge.  U15s: Sel ected 2 x Blues and Waratah teams in each g ender. (in addition to usual U16 Teams.  U16s: Selected an U16 Country Development team, in addition to the regular Blues & Waratah teams.

A number of strategic partnerships have been established and/or m aintained in the 2014/15 calendar. These address different aspects of the sport. In particular the major partners are:  NSW Institute of Sport  UTS Sport  Bar In Water Polo  AquaBliss

WPNSW has commenced an Internsh ip Program. This year there have been 4 different students passing through the program and assisting and developing in the administration of WPNSW. This program has been highly effective in providing students with practical application of their particular degree, and provides WPNSW with support and a contemporary insight to the respective fields.

WPNSW has also been involved in a range of new events & programs this year. The programs are:  Marrickville High training camp & carnival  Centre Forward / Centre Back Skills C linics  Bankstown Open Day Promotion  M1 & L1 live streaming of the GF.  WPNSW Academy  Started January 2015.  Has grown to have roughly 180 athletes in the program in term 4 2015.  Runs 7 sessions/week  10 coaching staff + program coordinator

All in all this year has been a very big year in the Sport Development for WPNSW, and it will continue to grow in the 2015/16 year .

WPNSW ACADEMY COORDINATORS REPORT KYLE ALP

Water Polo NSW Academy (WPNSWA) is an invitational program that was initiated in January 2015 to assist in the development of athletes and assist with transition to elite Water Polo. The prog ram engages athletes in the U14, U16 and U18 age groups and has 3 main orientations which will be implemented to supplement current training regimes of athletes.

The 3 orientations are:  Technique and skill development.  Athlete education.  Land and gym development.

The Academy is an official program as part of the elite athlete pathway in NSW and Australia and operates in partnership with the New South Wales Institu te of Sport (NSWIS) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). (WPA) has endorsed the program and recognises its value in preparing athletes for selection to national teams in accordance with its selection policy.

The program was piloted in Term 1 2015 with 45 athletes born 97 and 98. In Term 2 we added another age group with 50 athletes and in Term 3 we added a young B’2001 group once a week with an additional 50 athletes. In total we now have nearly 150 athletes in the progr am who were selected from State Championships or from metropolitan identification.

The program is as follows: Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Pool - 2 x Pool - 2 x coaches, 1 x coaches, 1 x 2000 coordinator Gym - 2 x coaches coordinator Pool - 2 x Pool - 2 x coaches, 1 x Gym - 2 x coaches, 1 x S eniors coordinator coaches coordinator Pool - 3 x coaches, 1 x 2001 coordinator

WPNSWA is coached by number of coaches whom all have elite water polo experience. We have Nationally Id entified Coaches, National Leagues Coaches and other top tier coaches in NSW involved the program. The program is overseen by the NSWIS coaches and teaches the fundament skills and drills that form the basis of the NSWIS level. This exposure and the experi ence that the athletes receive during the WPNSW is unique and innovative, and replicates contemporary water polo.

WATER POLO NEW SOUTH WALES 2014/2015 Annual Report 10

The following areas are some topics covered in the WPNSWA program:  Technique, endurance and strength in passing, leg work, shooting and game physicality  Water Polo specific swimming  Dry land, functional movement, flexibility, core strength and muscle development  Injury Prevention  Po sition specific and team tactic development  Elite athlete testing  Sports Science Components

The feedback from parents and players has been extremely positive and the aim for the program is to continue developing NSW players for all levels of competition.

BORN ‘00 SYDNEY C ARNIVAL

With the focus of developing our sport and our players, Water Polo NSW hosted their own Born 2000 Ca rnival. This allowed for the young age Under 16 year olds to participate in training camp plus competition against New Zealand Teams.
