Presidents Report

The 2014-2015 season has come and gone with many new players and our loyal and long term members enjoying the camaraderie and competition that our great sport provides us.

The season launched into the summer of 2014 with our trials and selection process. With the many new and strong players following the pathway from the juniors our selectors had a tough time making decisions. Once the teams were selected and the competition commenced then it was Game-On! As our teams showed tremendous Sharkies spirit and gave their all to every game.

Our Club has continued to perform incredibly well throughout our age groups and grades at Metropolitan, State and National levels.

In the Metropolitan Competition our Ladies Team was Minor Premiers but overall 3rd and our Men finished in 4th place. In the National League our Women were 3rd after normal season and finished 4th after finals. Our Men finished in 7th place just shy of making the finals series which was a great effort from them and one big step toward a podium position in the future..

We admire and congratulate our club members selected to represent in school, state and national water polo teams. The whole club is behind our Rep Players so go out show that Sharks spirit.

The proposal for the development of a dedicated water polo facility within the grounds at Cronulla High School has proceeded with the Sporting Fields and Football Club House being constructed on the site and now in operation. The team being led by John Watkins is making progress and the plans can be viewed at www.siwpa.com.au. I wish to thank the SIWPA Board of Directors which is made up of John Watkins, Colin Nicholson, Paul Manning, Keith Ward, Chris Batty and John Zagame and the Executive consisting of John Watkins, President and Public Officer, Chris Batty, Secretary, David Bullock, Treasurer, Colin Nicholson, Chairman Capital Works Control Group and Dusan Damjanovic, Manager Programs Development and Operations Control Group for their contributions.

Our club is run day-to-day by a small group of very energetic and dedicated volunteers. Our management team is growing year by year but needs more supporters to accept formal roles. At the end of another wonderfully successful year we should all thank those who dedicate so much of their energy and time to make our sport great. Particularly let me thank the Executive Committee who does so much hard work.

The annual Sports Luncheon will be held before the start of the coming season as a Kick-Off event. We need a strong year for fundraising so please do your very best to support this and the other events throughout the coming season.

Let’s pull together and continue to make Cronulla Sharks the best club in .

Go Sharkies !

John Zagame

DIRECTOR OF FINANCE AND PLANNING REPORT 2014 - 2015

The financial statements of Cronulla Water Polo Club Inc that appear in this report have been audited by the auditor duly appointed by the Club, Tom Iceton, OAM CA Chartered Accountant.

The Club has returned a deficit of ($10,625.48) for the year compared to a small surplus of $5,679.21 in the prior year. The main reasons for the deficit this year is the payment of $10,000 in sponsorship donation to Sharks International Waterpolo Academy Inc (the pool development body) and reduced fund raising activities relating to National League and water polo camps this year. The sponsorship donation was received by the Club in prior years specifically for the purpose of the Capital Infrastructure Project (new pool development). The result highlights the importance of fundraising for the Club to allow the Club to remain in surplus each year.

Despite the current year deficit the Club remains in a healthy financial position with cash on hand at the end of the financial year of $57,014.08 (prior year $68,620). It should be noted that $15,000 of cash on hand in the prior year related to sponsorship donations received by the Club specifically for the purpose of the Capital Infrastructure Project (new pool development) which was paid across to Sharks International Waterpolo Academy Inc (the pool development body) in this financial year.

Accounts Receivable representing monies owed to the Club was $11,027.77 at the end of the financial year (prior year $13,247). Current outstanding (less than 21 days) was $1,505 (prior year $6,825) while over 21 day unpaid invoices totalled $9,522.77 (prior year $6,455), most of which related to National League player monies owing. It is important that the Club receives payment from players on a timely basis to ensure we are funded to meet all the Club’s obligations.

Trade Creditors representing amounts owed by the Club was $13,384.20 at the end of the financial year (prior year $13,601). The majority of the balance represented two outstanding invoices owing to Water Polo NSW for $6,985 for referee charges for the 2014/15 Metro Summer Competition and $5,000 for metro team entry fees for the NSW state championships. Both invoices were unpaid at year end as the Club had queried both invoices.

Other points to note in relation to the current year financials compared to the prior year:

1. The 2014 Sports Lunch generated a $9,677 (2013 Sports Lunch $10,136) net profit for the Club.

2. The annual Blue Tie Ball was not organised this year. While in the prior year the 50th Anniversary Celebration did not generate a surplus for the Club due to lower than expected attendance this function has historically been a strong fund raiser for the Club (the 2013 Blue Tie Ball generated a $9,746 net profit for the Club). A strongly attended function can be an important fundraising activity for the Club.

3. The National League teams continue to require support from the broader Club community. While National League Income including specific National League sponsorship and fundraising totalled $31,109 (prior year $39,640), total National League expenses totalled $49,329 (prior year $60,677) generating a net deficit for National League of ($18,220) (prior year net deficit of ($21,036)).

- 4 - Cronulla Sutherland Water polo Club Inc 50th Annual Report 2014/2015

4. Due to a lack of additional fund raising this year there was no expenditure on capital or equipment purchases this year.

Lastly, thank you to those businesses whom have provided financial support during the financial year - Paul’s Warehouse, Cronulla Sutherland League Club Sports Council, and McDonalds Sylvania. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Roger Rudkins Director of Finance and Planning

CAPITAL INFRASTRUCTURE REPORT

Sharks International Water Polo Academy is an incorporated organisation registered in New South Wales, Australia. The Academy was established by the Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club Incorporated to solve our sport’s biggest barrier to sustainable development and growth – the lack of suitable facilities, access to those facilities and program management of facility operations. As it stands, grass roots participation is constrained and the delivery of quality development pathways for emerging elite and elite athletes is unsuitable and insufficient. Spectator accommodation is minimal to say the least and without a world class facility in our region the conduct of National League games, regional, state, national and international tournaments and events will become ever more problematic and the benefits of program enhancement and sports tourism will be lost.

The Foundation Members of the Sharks International Water Polo Academy are the Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club Incorporated and the University of Wollongong’s Recreation and Aquatic Centre Ltd. The Foundation Stone for this alliance was the securing of a Deed of Agreement between the Cronulla Sutherland Water Polo Club and the NSW Department of Education.

Governance is through a Board of Directors with an Executive Leadership Team holding functional responsibilities for management, program operations and service delivery outcomes.

New season, new coach and new style of play! The girls won 11 of the 12 games they played across the season, only losing a round game to Sydney Uni by 1 goal. Unfortunately they went down to Balmain also by 1 goal in the semi finals at Ryde and this allowed Balmain to go on to be beaten by Sydney Uni for the gold, with us earning 3rd place. Congratulations to Holly Lincoln-Smith who married James Young during the season and to Charlotte Cottle (Hartwick) and Lena Mihailovic (Arizona Satae University) who took off to the States to attend and play polo there. Also to the girls who represented NSW and Australia following this season: Aussie Stingers - Elysha O'Neill, Holly Lincoln-Smith, Nicola Zagame, Sarah Harris, Pinky Rewi-Henry; AUS age-based teams: Amy Ridge, Lena Mihailovic, Molly Williams, Liara Holden, Ashley Colaco and Pip Cooper. Our 2nd grade girls team made the top 4 in the metro comp and qualified to the semi-finals. Unfortunately we were knocked out by Balmain in a tough game. We did really well to just go down in a tight game at a time when a few of our players were in Adelaide playing National League and we had everyone else playing as hard as they could with only a couple of reserves. This season we again used second grade to help develop our girls to become the best players they can be and hopefully get some of them ready to be strong 1st grade/national league players in the future. We try to complement what they learn from playing in their age group teams with what they can learn by playing in the grade competition. This year was pleasing because even though we did get some girls up playing a bit in 1st grade and some NL, but we also had the majority of the girls playing the best water polo that I have seen from them individually. The work they did in L2’s also helped them be important parts of their age group teams – particularly in the under 18s where the girls had an amazing season.

I want to thank Wendy for being an awesome manager/ co-coach. If it wasn’t for her help then I would not have been able to take this team for this season due to the amount of time I was away, especially at the beginning of the season.

Thanks to the girls for being such a great group. We had a tough start to the season with some big results against us early on but then ended up turning up a lot of those games around and had some big wins. I really loved the team we had and the culture in our group - aiming to win by playing good water polo and developing the new skills learnt in training while enjoying the challenge and having fun.

Thanks, Bec

What a season we had! L16B Metro Champions losing only one game throughout the season and a top 8 finish at State! We started the season well, training hard, with a team full of potential, but still learning the game so we concentrated on swimming and basic skills. This was a good time for the girls to bond and we enjoyed a fun night at Flip Out and Yogurberry after. We won our first few games easily but lost our third game to SNB 2-3. This was to be the last time we lost a game and set up the pattern for games against SNB for the rest of the season. To see how the girls had improved from the first time they played SNB to how they played in the final round was amazing. We won our semi-final convincingly and met SNB in the grand final. The game, as expected was very tight. We won 8-5 and were always in front and confident of a win due to our determination and will. The girl's attitude, hard work and development in skill level improved dramatically throughout the year to the point where at State when we faced our toughest competition, they came together and worked brilliantly to come in the top 8 of NSW. During the season every one of the girls has made vast improvements from the beginning of the season. The girls were willing to work hard and were rewarded for their efforts, but they also ensured that they had some fun along the way. There were some everlasting memories. The season's MVP, based on a 3- 2-1 system was Nicole Dunn, while our most improved player was Charlotte Wilson. Congratulations girls on such a great season. You all did a great job in winning the L16B competition. Not everyone gets to win a grand final so enjoy the occasion. I had an enjoyable time coaching you all and I enjoyed watching the development in your play and confidence and also the friendships that you have formed. You are all nice girls and talented water polo players and it was a privilege to have coached you. Finally thank you to all of the parents for your support. Thank you for getting the girls to games and training sessions and making our social nights fun as well as our trips away. Thanks, Coach: Mikaela Gatherer Manager: Ian Gatherer

What a great season 2014/15 was for my 14 a sharks. The girls did well and played solidly every game considering there were so many disruptions and rule changes.. By round 5 we had started to get some momentum then the rules were charged for all junior teams going from 7 players in the water to 6. The girls also had to learn new extra man attack and how to set up the mushroom. The girls adapted well to the changes. They were probably the best defensive team in the comp and other than their 2nd game their biggest loosing margin ever was 3 goals. In February we travelled to Tamworth for the state carnival. We performed well in the rounds and were beaten in the semi by the eventual winners Breakers. ( we went out beat Breakers in our next round game by 8 goals. In the metro comp we finished equal minor premiers with UNSW. We lost the semi 2-1 and played final and grand final on the same day. After a good win against breakers in the final we had to back up 3 hours later and play UNSW in the grand final which we lost 4-3. Despite the loss Clare and I were both very happy with the result. Immediately after the Metro season we went to Albury/Wodonga to play in the National club championships. 3 weeks before the Nationals we were advised that our goalkeeper Lauren Balla was ineligible to play for us as she also plays in the Southern Highlands . Lucy Hull volunteered to be our goalie. We remained undefeated through the whole tournament and managed to easily beat Breakers and UNSW in the playoff rounds and remained undefeated for the tournament. We convincingly won our semi against the Brisbane Barracudas and met Brisbane club Polo Bears in the grand final. The game was drawn at the end so we had to go to penalty shootout. Our 5 shooters were all confident ( after much practice all season ) and were converted every goal. Lucy did a great job in goals and saved the 1st ball shot at her. It was such an exciting day being National club champions. Congratulations to my girls. They deserved their success through their hard work. Each girl swam in addition to our training. Very rarely did anyone miss a 5.00 am Friday morning training session nor a Tuesday night Sans Souci session. We did not have a captain as we did not need one. We had no stars in our team. Thanks so much to Clare for being the best Manager. Clare organised the 2 trips away with minimal fuss. Thanks to the 14 a boys who we played a game against every Friday morning and the 14b girls and boys who we would also train against on some Sunday mornings. A very special thanks to Mark Holden who gave extra training firstly to our goalie Lauren and then to Lucy. Thanks to all of the parents who do the timekeeping and scoring and getting the girls to all of our sessions and games. Thanks the enthusiasm at games. Some memorable achievements from the season: MVP : Daniela Zapata , Best new talent : Lucy Hull, Tournament 6 at State - Daniela Zapata NSW Blues: Abbey Simshauser, Ruby Weekes and Daniela Zapata , NSW Waratahs - Lauren Balla and Beth Simmons , NSW CHS 2nds and Sydney East - Abbey Simshauser, Sydney East PSSA - Sophie Earl and Lucy Hull
