NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL

2008 President’s Report

As we reflect on the past twelve months, the highlight which eclipsed all else was without a doubt the Beijing Olympic Games. The Australian Team returned home with 46 medals (14 gold, 15 silver, 17 bronze) and a swag full of wonderful memories. Of the 435 Olympians in the 2008 Team, 104 were from NSW (24%) and of that number 28 NSW athletes won a medal in Beijing. Congratulations to all our Beijing Olympians!

Whether a medallist or not, they all competed with honesty, dignity and courage – sometimes overcoming seemingly impossible odds – to make the Olympics what it is – an unqualified celebration of sport and noble sportsmanship. Special mention should also go to those coaches, officials and administrators whose committed efforts behind the “field of play”, so ably supported and encouraged our athletes to achieve their dreams.

In support of the Australian Team, the NSWOC fundraising culminated in $1.84m at year’s end, which well exceeded our target of $1.38m. Our sincere appreciation is extended to the Chairman, John Conde, and the NSW state and regional committee members who worked so diligently to achieve such an outstanding result. We are pleased to confirm that John Conde has agreed to remain Chairman of the NSW Corporate Fundraising Committee to spearhead our fundraising for the 2012 London Games.

On the education front, 2008 saw 309 young students receive the Pierre de Coubertin Award, realising an increase on 2007 numbers. On 27th June 100 students attended an Olympic Workshop before being presented with their certificates by Olympian Sarah Ryan. A number of volunteers from the Workshop subsequently met with four past recipients to develop an Olympic Values Activity which they presented to 100 students of St Euphemia College, Bankstown in Term 4.

NSWOC was honoured to acknowledge our nominee, Debbie Watson, 2000 Gold medallist () as the recipient of the 2008 IOC Women & Sport Award for Oceania, as well as Victoria Roberts, 2000/2004 Olympian () and past member of the AOC Athletes Commission, who represented the AOC at the Young Participants Session of the International Olympic Academy, Greece.

We gratefully recognise the financial support of the AOC and NSW Sport and Recreation which provides a valuable basis for our work. The close working relationship we enjoy with their Executive and staff supplements our own efforts in promoting the Olympic Movement throughout the state. Throughout the year, NSWOC staff have worked in cooperation on major projects or been involved in consultative committees to assist both organisations to achieve their goals. Once again, the NSW Department of Education and Training assisted with the state-wide distribution of the Pierre de Coubertin nomination forms.

At the 2008 Annual General Meeting we presented the NSWOC Order of Merit to David Morgan Williams (Chairman, Illawarra Fundraising Committee) and Andrea Webster (Event Manager) in recognition of their contribution to the work of the Council. We also welcomed Peter Lozan, President, NSW Swimming, to the Executive, following his election to fill the casual vacancy created in late 2007.

As advised at the AGM, the 2008 Financial Statements show the gift by deed of $50,000 to the Australian Olympic Foundation (AOF). This is in addition to the gifting of $470,000 in 2007, making a total contribution of $520,000 to the AOF. The Executive are currently exploring ways to further our objectives using the special grant this “gifting” generates.

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL

It was with sadness that we noted the passing of a number of our Olympic family, including Stuart Alldritt OAM, who was the long standing delegate for NSW Swimming and a recipient of the NSWOC Order of Merit. His contribution to swimming over the years is legendary and he will be missed.

My sincere thanks are extended to James Edwards, Monique Fermin and the NSWOC Executive for their commitment and on-going support in a year of heightened activity. I would particularly acknowledge the contribution of Monique Fermin to the work of the Council over the past two years. Regretfully, she has left us to pursue a career in event management with the Sony Foundation, and we will miss her professional work and cheerful cooperative spirit in so many ways.

Just as the Beijing Olympics showed us that the world can pull together and “live as one”, sharing the highs and lows of human endeavour, and rejoicing in the excellence of the human spirit as demonstrated by our athletes, let us look forward to London in 2012 with vigour and enterprise.

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL

2008 Year in Review: Executive Director

The role of the NSW Olympic Council is primarily to undertake fundraising activities for the Australian Olympic Team and promote the Olympic Movement through education programs.

2008 saw a significant increase in fundraising activities throughout New South Wales with several large events held throughout the State. Momentum and interest in the 2008 Team steadily built in the Olympic Year in the countdown towards the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympic Games on 8.8.08.

The NSW Olympic Council surpassed its target of $1.38 million, raising $1.84 million for the 2008 Team Fund. All monies raised went directly to sending the 2008 Australian Olympic Team to Beijing.

NSW was privileged to enjoy the support of our Fundraising Committees which contributed a tremendous amount of monetary and moral support for the 2008 Team. Committees in Sydney, the Hunter, Illawarra, Central Coast and the Chinese Community represented leaders in commerce and the community. They worked tirelessly to ensure the Team was properly supported by business in NSW and they collectively managed to ‘sell out’ each event held in 2008.

Whilst the primary focus of the fundraising events are to raise funds for the Team, they serve many positive purposes. They showcase the Olympic Movement and enable business communities and the general public the opportunity to mingle with Olympians and be a part of the athlete’s journey to the Olympic Games. Importantly, our major events are well attended by Olympians, giving them the opportunity to keep in touch and lend their support to the current Team.

My thanks go to Helen Brownlee, Doug Donoghue and members of the NSWOC Executive for their support throughout the very busy fundraising event calendar of 2008. In particular, my thanks go to Monique Fermin who added a significant contribution to the entire NSWOC program. Monique worked tirelessly between October 2006 – January 2009, especially with the Team fundraising events. She was an essential part of the ‘Out of Village’ group during the Olympic Games, as well as the Welcome Home Celebrations throughout . We all wish Monique the best of luck.

With less than one year to go until the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver we look forward to assisting our winter athletes in their Olympic journey.

Team Fundraising

Fundraising for the 2008 Australian Olympic Team was heavily supported AOC (NSW) Fundraising by the business communities in Sydney and throughout New South Wales. Committee – Beijing 2008 The most pleasing element to all the events was the genuine enthusiasm shown for the 2008 Team as well as the support of the events by the Patron current 2008 Team Members and all Olympians. The NSW Olympic Council The Hon. Nathan Rees MP set an ambitious calendar of fundraising events to assist the Team and Premier of New South Wales was greatly supported by the extraordinary Fundraising Committees, as detailed below. Chairman John Conde AO The AOC’s (NSW) Fundraising Committee Chaired by John Conde AO, ran two major appeal dinners leading into Beijing. The first was ‘One Year to Deputy Chairman Go’ on 8 August 2007 – which raised just over $500,000 for the Team. The Doug Donoghue AM Second dinner ‘Bound for Beijing’ was held on 14 May 2008 and improved from the first event to raise $600,000. The Committee has therefore raised Fundraising Committee over $1.1 million for the 2008 Team – an outstanding result. Tony Berg AM Marcus Blackmore AM ‘Bound for Beijing’ Appeal Dinner - 14 May 2008 Bonita Boezeman AO The ‘Bound for Beijing’ Athlete Farewell Dinner was held on 14 May at the Mark Bouris Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre - the major fundraising event in Liz Cacciottolo the NSW Olympic calendar. Over 800 guests enjoyed a unique Olympic Angela Clarke evening with 80 Olympians attending. Her Excellency Professor Marie John Coates AC Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales addressed all guests and Peter Cosgrove AC MC delivered an inspirational speech to the athletes of the 2008 Team. Charles Curran AC Sydney’s business community heavily supported the appeal dinner and a Terry Davis total of $600,000 was raised for the Team. Geoff Dixon Michael Grace AM

Hunter Appeal Dinner - 28 February 2008 The Hunter Appeal Dinner held at Wests Leagues Club on 28 February. It set the benchmark for the year’s events and was a great success. With approximately 330 guests and twenty Olympians, the Hunter Fundraising Committee chaired by Phil Neat exceeded their target and raised $70,000 for the 2008 Team.

Illawarra Appeal Dinner - 12 March 2008 The Novotel Northbeach, Wollongong hosted the Illawarra Appeal Dinner on 12 March – the largest of our regional appeal dinners with 390 guests and thirty Olympians. David Morgan Williams led the Illawarra Fundraising Committee which raised $45,000 for the Team.

Carbine Club Olympic Luncheon - 14 March 2008 On 14 March, the Carbine Club (NSW) ran an ‘Olympic Lunch’ at the Four Points Hotel, where they made another very generous donation of $25,000 to the 2008 Team Fund (matching their initial donation of $25,000 from 2007) and bringing the total contribution to $50,000.

Chinese Community Team Appeal Dinner - 13 June 2008 Sydney’s Chinese Communities combined to run an appeal dinner for the 2008 Team at Grand Restaurant, Market City on 13 June. Organised by the Chinese Youth League and the Chinese Australia Forum, many Olympians and AOC Executive attended along with an outstanding show of support for the Team by current and former NSW and Federal politicians including former Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke. The support for the Team was very generous and raised $60,000.

The Central Coast - 21 June 2008 The Central Coast ran an appeal dinner for the Team on 21 June. The event, attended by over 250 guests and thirty Olympians, promoted the Olympic Movement superbly with an abundance of Olympic Spirit and raised $20,000 in the process.

Billich Art Gallery - 25 June 2008 Billich Gallery in The Rocks once again supported the Australian Olympic Team by hosting a ‘Launch’ of Chinese Olympic Art on 25 June. The live auction of one painting signed by many Olympians secured $7,500 for the Team Fund.

Team Welcome Home Celebrations

In the weeks post-Beijing, the NSW Olympic Council contributed considerable support to the AOC to organise the 2008 Team’s Welcome Home Parade. The national tour of the ‘Happy Homecoming Celebrations’, presented by Olympic Team Partner Bankwest began in Sydney on 15 September 2008. Over 180 of the 2008 Team members (including 96 Olympians and sixty two medallists) participated in the Sydney Parade up George Street with a Civic Reception at Town Hall and Team Function at the Sydney Opera House.

The Team were amazed at the enthusiasm and gratitude expressed by the many thousands of people who lined George Street to cheer them on. Media interest in the Team was significant with all outlets represented and Olympic television broadcaster Channel Seven televising the Sydney parade nationally. The Hon. Nathan Rees MP, Premier of New South Wales together with the Hon. Clover Moore MP, Lord Mayor of Sydney presented the ‘Keys to the City’ to the 2008 Australian Olympic Team.

2008 Order of Merit

NSW Olympic Council’s Order of Merit was awarded in 2008 to two distinguished recipients who have been integral members of the Australian Olympic family since the Atlanta 1996 Olympiad and were still actively involved in the Beijing 2008 campaign - Mr David Morgan Williams and Mrs Andrea Webster.

David Morgan Williams first chaired the Illawarra’s Fundraising Committee for Atlanta 1996 and has been Chairman since, through the campaigns of Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and now Beijing 2008. He has greatly assisted in the preparation for each Olympic Team, both raising funds and promoting the Olympic Movement to Wollongong and the Illawarra.

Andrea Webster has been a valued member of the Olympic family since the Atlanta 1996 Olympiad as our perennial Event Producer of Sydney’s major appeal dinners. Andy continues to deliver outstanding large-scale fundraising dinners - showcasing the Olympic Movement and greatly assisting in raising funds for the Team. In 2008 Andy also produced the Australian Olympic Team Reception in Beijing on the eve of the Opening Ceremony.

2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival

The start of 2009 has already seen the AOC staging the fifth edition of the Australian Youth Olympic Festival (AYOF) in Sydney from 14 – 18 January. Over 1,600 athletes and officials from 30 nations competed in seventeen sports in what has been widely regarded as the ‘best Games’ so far. Many NSW athletes were represented in the Australian Team. Equally, many NSW Officials were heavily involved assisting their State and National Federations to stage the Festival. The competition was once again intense as our future Olympians gained a simulated Olympic Games experience of a large scale multi-sport competition.

Olympic Education

2008 Pierre de Coubertin Awards The 2008 Pierre de Coubertin Awards recognised 309 New South Wales (NSW) students from some 779 young people across Australia for their participation in sport and their demonstration of the Olympic values. The number of recipients increase each year and is indicative of the value placed on the Award by the schools who nominate students.

In NSW the Olympic Academy Day and Award Presentation was conducted at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on 27 June for 100 students from a total of 309 recipients. The students were engaged in a program of activities delivered by Olympians covering drug education (Joanne Carter, Figure Skating, Torino 2006) and the Olympic experience from Myriam Glez, (Synchronised Swimming, Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008)and Alexandra Croak (Gymnastics, Sydney 2000; Diving, Beijing 2008). Following an update on the 2008 Olympic Games and the Australian Olympic Team, Paul Wade OAM (Football, Seoul 1988) organised a physical activities session for the students on the Olympic Hockey pitch.

The Award Presentation was conducted in the Hall of Legends for an audience of 400 (students, parents and school representatives) with guest speaker Sarah Ryan OAM (Swimming, Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004). The NSWOC is indebted to the Sydney Sports Centre Trust who supported the Academy and Award Presentation by providing the venue free of charge. Thanks are also extended to the IOC Solidarity Program which provided financial assistance for the Awards in 2008.

The Pierre de Coubertin Awards continue to deliver by developing an understanding of the Olympic Movement among young people, promoting Olympians as role models, encouraging participation in sport and recognising the achievements of school students. The Awards form the framework to select young people to represent the AOC at the Olympic Youth Camps, the International Pierre de Coubertin Youth Forums, the Olympic Torch Relays and International Conferences.

A significant number of Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients have gone on to achieve success in their chosen sport, with a number selected to be Australian representatives at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

2008 ANNUAL REPORT p. 18

NEW SOUTH WALES OLYMPIC COUNCIL

The CAF Squad As an extension of the NSW program, a group of 15 young Pierre de Coubertin Award recipients (from 2005, 2007 and 2008) formed the CAF (Citius, Altius, Fortius) Squad following the 2008 Academy Day. The CAF Squad met on several occasions to develop an interactive activity based on the Olympic Values for delivery to young people in schools. With the finalisation of their presentation to 100 students of St Euphemia’s College, Bankstown, these young people showed the wonderful capacity of youth to inspire youth!

A number of the CAF Squad enjoyed the experience of being a volunteer at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival, and it is intended to involve these enthusiastic young people in future NSWOC activities.

International Olympic Academy NSWOC were honoured to have their nominated candidate, Vicky Roberts, selected to represent the AOC at the 2008 International Olympic Academy in Ancient Olympia, Greece during June, 2008. Vicky was a Pierre de Coubertin Award recipient back in 1995, before going on to represent Australia in Rowing at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

Olympic Day A large number of NSW Primary Schools registered their intention to organise an Olympic Day celebration on or around 20th June, 2008. The NSWOC worked closely with a small number of schools to coordinate an Olympian visit for their event. Alex Croak, Shelley Oates-Wilding, Belinda Wright, Lisa Critoph, Thomas Whalan, Melissa Medlicott, John Devitt, Biance Netzler and Morgan Endicott-Davies were just a few of the Olympians who visited schools and shared their experiences. For some remote schools, Olympians spoke to students using video conferencing technology coordinated by the AOC.

Ambassadors NSW Olympians endorsed by the AOC as Olympic Education Ambassadors include Nathan Thomas (Water Polo), Danielle Le Ray (Gymnastics), Cheryl Salisbury (Football), Thomas Whalan (Water Polo), Lisa Critoph (Synchronised Swimming), and Sarah Ryan (Swimming). Their role is to visit schools in their area encouraging active and healthy lifestyles and promoting the a.s.p.i.r.e. values.

In addition, Jo Carter, Debbie Watson and Vicky Roberts have delivered Live Clean Play Clean sessions to school groups, school sports teams and the national football team prior to their international tour.

Olympians Club of NSW: President’s Report

NSW OLYMPIANS CLUB REPORT 2008

The Beijing Olympics were spectacular and on behalf of all members of the Olympians Club I congratulate all 2008 Olympians and the Team support staff for their efforts and performances during the Games. I wish to also send a cordial welcome to our latest members of the Olympians Club. You have joined an elite group and we look forward to you being involved in future activities.

I had the pleasure to be in Beijing during the Games and met with WOA President Dick Fosbury at the Visa Olympians Reunion Centre. Dick was lamenting the difficulty in attracting members in the and globally, to participate in large numbers in organised activities.

Our 3rd Olympians Club Lawns Bowls Day was conducted at the new venue of Paddington Bowling Club. Unfortunately the weather was not kind, but given the competitive nature of our group, a hastily organised pool competition and trivia event were conducted with the winners being inconsequential. Boxer, Rick Timperi was unanimously voted as the custodian of the perpetual Bowls Day trophy. The event will involve a change of format in 2009. We are moving indoors to contest a Ten Pin Bowling competition in the first half of the year. Stay tuned for details.

The Beijing Olympians Welcome Home event doubled as the Olympians Club Annual event in 2008. It was a pleasure to be a part of the celebration and those Olympians who attended I am sure enjoyed the opportunity to meet and celebrate with our latest members.

Sincere thanks to the AOC and the NSW Olympics Council for the support this year and a special thanks to James Edwards and Monique Fermin for their involvement and assistance.

Further thanks to the Committee for their efforts and encouragement throughout the year.

I would encourage all NSW Olympians to keep in touch. Please provide your contact details, especially email address, to the NSW Olympic Council so that we have an accurate database of members. I would ask all Olympians to contact their team mates and athletes in their respective sport so that we can expand the involvement of Olympians in our events.

As always it has been a pleasure to be your President this year. We will be conducting an Annual General Meeting in the near future and would ask those of you who would like to take on an active role in the Executive of the Olympians Club to contact myself or the NSW Olympic Council

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2008

1. Corporate Information The financial report of the New South Wales Olympic Council Inc. (NSWOC) for the year ended 31 December 2008 was authorised for issue in accordance with a resolution of the Executive Board on 3 March 2009.

The NSWOC is an Association incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984 of New South Wales and is domiciled in New South Wales.

The principal place of business is Level 3, 1 Atchison Street, St Leonards, NSW, 2065.

The nature of the operations and principal activities of the Council are described in note 10.

2 STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The significant policies which have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements are:

(a) Basis of preparation This special purpose financial report has been prepared for distribution to the members to fulfil the committee of managements’ (“Executive Board”) financial reporting requirements under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984 of New South Wales and the Councils’ constitution. The accounting policies used in the preparation of this financial report, as described below, are consistent with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984 of New South Wales and the Councils’ constitution, and are, in the opinion of the Executive Board, appropriate to meet the needs of members:

(i) The financial report has been prepared on an accrual basis of accounting including the historical cost convention and the going concern assumption.

(ii) The Council is not a reporting entity because in the opinion of the Executive there are unlikely to exist users of the financial report who are unable to command the preparation of reports tailored so as to satisfy specifically all of their information needs.

The members neither hold equity in, nor are financial lenders to, the Council and their membership is pursuant to the Olympic Charter as well as the Constitution.

Accordingly, the financial report has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984 of New South Wales and the Constitution, the basis of accounting specified by all Accounting Standards and Interpretations and the disclosure requirements of AASB 101 'Presentation of Financial Statements', AASB 107 'Cash Flow Statements', AASB 108 'Accounting Policies, Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors', AASB 1031 'Materiality and AASB 1048 Interpretation and Application of Standards' which apply to all entities required to prepare financial reports under the Associations Incorporation Act, 1984 of New South Wales and the Constitution.

2 (a) (ii) Continued

The Executive have determined that in order for the financial report to give a true and fair view of the Council’s performance, cash flows and financial position, the requirements of Australian Accounting Standards and other financial reporting requirements in Australia relating to the measurement of assets, liabilities, revenues, expenses and equity should be complied with.

iii) The financial report is prepared in Australian dollars.

(b) Statement of compliance Certain Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations have recently been issued or amended but are not yet effective and have not been adopted by the Council for the annual reporting period ended 31 December 2008. The Executive have not early adopted any of these new or amended standards or interpretations. The Executive have not yet fully assessed the impact of these new or amended standards (to the extent relevant to the Council) and interpretations.

This special purpose financial report complies with Australian Accounting Standards as described above.

(c) Income and Expenditure Recognition Income, with the exception of fundraising and government grants, has been brought to account on an accrual basis and if not received at balance date is reflected in the Balance Sheet as a receivable. Expenses have been brought to account as incurred and any expenses incurred but not paid for at balance date are reflected in the Balance Sheet as creditors.

(d) Fundraising The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (‘AOC’) and, as a result all of the funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC.

At 31 December 2008, the NSWOC had raised $1,844,942. (2007: $1,112,616) towards the 2005- 2008 Olympic Team Appeal.

(e) Income Tax The NSWOC is exempt from Australian income tax.

(f) Cash and cash equivalents The NSWOC undertakes fundraising on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee Inc. (‘AOC’) and, as a result all of the funds raised by the NSWOC are recorded directly in the financial statements of the AOC. At 31 December 2008 the NSWOC had no bank account and for administrative purposes all cash transactions are processed by the AOC and the net cash position is reflected in a net receivable account at year end (Refer Note 6).

(g) Property, Plant and Equipment

Acquisition Items of property, plant and equipment are recorded at cost or, in the case of donations and sponsorship contributions in kind, at fair value at the time of donation or contribution, less accumulated depreciation and any impairment in value.

Depreciation and amortisation Items of plant and equipment are depreciated on a straight line basis over their estimated useful lives ranging from 3 to 15 years from the date of acquisition.

Impairment The carrying values of plant and equipment are reviewed for impairment when events or changes in circumstances indicate the carrying value may not be recoverable.

If any such indication exists and where the carrying values exceed the estimated recoverable amount, the assets are written down to their recoverable amount.

The recoverable amount of plant and equipment is the greater of fair value less costs to sell and value in use. Value in use is the depreciated replacement cost of an asset when the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent on the asset’s ability to generate net cash inflows and where the NSWOC would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic benefits.

Impairment losses would be recognised in the income statement.

(h) Government Grants Government grants are recognised at their fair value where there is a reasonable assurance that the grant will be received and all attaching conditions will be complied with.

(i) Trade and other receivables Trade receivables, which generally have 30-90 day terms, are recognised and carried at original invoice amount less an allowance for any uncollectible amounts.

An estimate for doubtful debts is made when collection of the full amount is no longer probable. Bad debts are written off when identified.

3. Significant accounting judgements, estimates and assumptions

In applying the accounting policies the NSWOC evaluates judgements, estimates and assumptions based on experience and other factors, including expectations of future events. All judgements, estimates and assumptions made are believed to be reasonable based on the most current set of circumstances available to the NSWOC. Actual results may differ from the judgements, estimates and assumptions.
