Townsville-Thuringowa, Burnett and Granite Belt Softball Associations continue as SQI Associate Members.

Townsville-Thuringowa SA (TTSA) conducted two short women's fastpitch competitions in 2013 with varying success. The first season provided a four team competition and although a few new players joined, due to changes in work and other commitments, the second competition reduced to three teams. By the end of the second season approximately fifteen juniors were showing up on a regular basis so they participated in modified games.

TTSA started their 2014 competition earlier in February/March to attract more players prior to other sports starting. This was successful in gaining new players for the ladies competition but found juniors had not finished summer sports. There is some interest in a men’s competition with sufficient players to form one complete team. More promotion and recruitment is needed to get the junior and men’s competition off the ground in 2014.

Burnett SA started the year with a Softball Batter Up program (September 2013) for 19 participants who all went on to register for the season. Fourteen participated in the Swing into Softball program and the other 5 joining the U14 competition. Unfortunately over several weeks, both competition numbers slowly depleted (children not showing up, no correspondence from parents) – to the point where Burnett had no choice but to finish the season early. During this time the committee has also been struggling with volunteers leaving, due to family/work & other commitments

A survey is currently being conducted to gain insight from parents, past and current members as to why Softball is struggling in the South Burnett and what can be done to draw interest to the game and increase participation.

Burnett SA finished the year on a high note when 100 participants attended a Come & Try Day at the Kumbia State School as a lead in to the school’s Centenary Celebrations.

Granite Belt SA commenced recruitment in January 2014 when 510 students in seven schools were exposed to softball through their participation in school clinics conducted during the first week of school. 57 adults participated in the inaugural OzPitch competition.

As with all our associations, the achievements are the results of a small band of hard working volunteer committee members. They are to be congratulated on the successes they have achieved. We look forward to continuing to work with them to grow softball in their region.

SCHOOL SPORT SOFTBALL School Sport Softball is an important partner of Softball Queensland and their State Championships, which are available for both primary and secondary girls and boys, are an important component in the player and official pathway. Thank you to Russell Miller and Matthew Harrison and the secondary and primary school committee members for ensuring softball is available for schoolchildren to participate in across Queensland.

Both Primary and Secondary School Softball had a successful year with the Secondary Schoolgirls bringing home the National Championship title and the Primary School Girls and Primary Boys both finishing in 2nd position. For the first time an interstate exchange for Secondary Schoolboys was held between Queensland and . Congratulations to Wellington Point State High School on winning both the girls and boys Golden Glove Championships.

Most District Associations provide volunteer coaches, umpires, scorers and their venues for schools to conduct their interschool competitions and softball programs.

Redcliffe SA hosted a one day tournament providing an opportunity for the Queensland Primary School Girls and Boys’ Teams to gain much needed competition prior to departing for the National Primary School Exchange.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS Softball Queensland and Special Olympics Queensland (SOQ) signed a Memorandum of Understanding outlining the partnership between the organisations. Building on existing programs the long term goal is for a Special Olympics program to be provided in all regions of Queensland. This will provide the foundation for a competition to be held as part of the Southern Cross Challenge and for Special Olympics Queensland to enter a softball team in the Australian Special Olympics program. An important outcome of the partnership will be the recognition of Special Olympics Queensland as a SQI Associate Member.

Ten programs with 250 participants were held in Brisbane, Burnett, Gladstone, Hervey Bay Noosa, Suncoast-Hinterland, Wynnum x 2, and Bears Club (Brisbane) and St Brigid’s School at Nerang.

Brisbane SA and Bears Club reported that their conversion rate to traditional softball season was over 90%.

SCHOOL PATHWAY & HOLIDAY PROGRAMS Fifty-nine School Pathway Programs with over 2075 school children participating and seven School Holiday Programs for 227 participants were conducted.

10 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 14 S WING I NTO S OFTBALL

With a desire to make participation in junior softball more enjoyable and relevant to children in today’s society and taking heed to the evidence relating to delivery of organised sport, Brisbane Softball Association ran the first “Swing Into Softball” program and Suncoast-Hinterland and Burnett followed with all reporting the program was a great success.

11 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 14 O Z P ITCH

OzPitch is gaining momentum with eleven short season competitions, ranging from five to twelve weeks, being conducted. Total participant numbers were 685 with approximately 40% being new to softball.

In addition, three OzPitch tournaments were held at Suncoast-Hinterland, Redcliffe Leagues and Brisbane Softball Associations with a total of thirteen teams and 136 players participating.

12 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 14 K UMBIA C ENTENARY C ELEBRATIONS

Kumbia, a small town with a population of 350 people in the South Burnett region was a bustling metropolis’s on Saturday 1st March 2014 with Kumbia State School celebrating their Centenary. This small school opened in 1914 with just 21 students. Over 1000 people (past students, teachers & their families) came from all over the country to celebrate the schools special day, including Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss (a past student) who attended to speak at the official ceremony & unveil the Centenary plaque.

As part of the Centenary celebrations, Karen Robe, a past student & softball player, was asked to organise a softball match for all of the past students and teachers to participate in. A couple of days prior to the Centenary, Karen assisted Burnett Softball Association to conduct a Come & Try day for the current students (a little under 100 participants), as a lead in to the Centenary celebrations. The program was very well received, with the students having a ball.

For those of you unaware, Kumbia was very well known back in the late 70’s/80’s for the high participation in Softball. This small sporting group became an icon in the softball world. Over the years this small sporting group had major success in the Queensland sporting arena, with many players and even coaches making local, regional and State representative teams. The association was also the host to what became one of the largest yearly softball carnivals anywhere in Queensland. This weekend of sport was held every September for over 10 years.

The softball match on Centenary Day was a huge success! Over 50 people registered to play, with all of these participants having played softball at some stage over their years at Kumbia State School. These participants ranged from 18 to 67 years of age. The game drew a huge crowd, with people rushing over to find a spare bale of hay to sit down and watch all of the action.

All participants & spectators had an awesome day and lots of laughs! It was great to see all of the familiar faces, friends I grew up with; my siblings/parents/grandparents friends – all playing softball. All of the old volunteers (coaches/scorers/managers/umpires) also attended, jumping right back in giving directions/ advice, with one of the past umpires coming along to call the game. The commentary was awesome, with memories of the good old days flooding right back.

Burnett Softball Association assisted with the softball match, along with conducting Come & Try activities for all of the children. Due to the huge success and overwhelming interest from the Come & Try Days and the Centenary Softball Match, the Principal and P & C Committee from Kumbia State School approached Burnett Softball to start running regular softball programs and a yearly softball carnival with all of the local small schools in the area. Overall the Come & Try Days and Centenary Softball match was a huge success for all involved, and potentially a huge step to increasing the membership of Softball in the South Burnett region.

39 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 - 14 S OFTBALL Q UEENSLAND M ASTERS T OURNAMENT

14 years running and still getting better!!!

Amongst the competition, partying and exciting times over the weekend, many great memories and friendly rivalries were made. This year 88 teams entered the Softball Queensland Masters Tournament where over 1200 players participated, playing 268 games in the three-days of competition.

Teams hailed from all over Queensland to participate; Roma, Quilpie, Charleville, Townville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Noosa, Sunshine Coast, Redlands, Logan, Toowoomba, Ipswich and the Gold Coast just to name a few. We also had teams from across the border in NSW from Coffs Harbour, Tweed Heads and Sydney as well as this year welcoming new teams from Victoria and New Zealand. They all descended on Meakin Park to take part in this annual tournament.

SQ Masters Representatives: Jenny Vandenhurk, Darren Sibraa and Leon Leach
