“Spirits that Matter: Cross-Gender Identifications in Haitian Vodou. In Defying Binarism: Gender Dynamics in Caribbean Literature and Culture . Virginia University Press. Ed. (forthcoming) Cross-Gender Identifications in Vodou Roberto Strongman University of California, Santa Barbara The representation of Vodou in Haitian cultural production is replete with cross- gendered subjectivities that many critics have failed to take into account. In Rene Depestre’s novel Hadriana dans tous mes rêves , the protagonist—Hadriana, a white French woman living in Haiti—is turned into a zombi on her wedding day and becomes the leader of a Vodou community. Martin Murno sees in Hadriana’s whiteness “obvious traces of Depestre’s francophilia” (Munro 2007, 127). He also concedes that there might be an element of resistance in Depestre’s idealizaton of Hadriana’s beauty by claiming that Hadriana might embody a “reversal of colonial eroticization of its tropical other” (Munro 2007, 127). What Munro fails to notice, however, is how Hadriana’s aborted marriage begins a non-heteronormative characterization that continues throughout her spiritual evolution. At the outset of the text Hadriana is associated with Nana Buruku, a lwa that is often represented as embodying a primordial androgynous gender. The people of Jacmel, unable to accept that a heart attack brought Nana down to the foot of the altar, used their necrophilic imagination to reinsert their daughter into a fairy tale. Her body’s disappearance from the sepulcher was the catalyst for such a leap from the fear of death into fantasy. 1(Depestre 1988, 98--99) At the end of the novel, she is associated with a male deity of springs: “I was Simbi-the- Spring. -

Chapter 9 The Spirit(s) of New Orleans Community Healing through Commemoration Roos Dorsman In this chapter I focus on faith, heritage, music and the fabrication of temporality in relation to Afro-Caribbean spirituality in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is particularly relevant as a site for exploration within the Atlantic perspectives because of the historical connections and circulations between Africa and the Caribbean, from which New Orleans emerged as an important port city. My research has been on contempo- rary voodoo cultures in New Orleans, and I will specifically focus on cer- emonies that contribute to a form of healing for the community that has to deal with the violent past of slave trade and slavery as well as with the more recent past of hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. As the locus for this chapter I have chosen Congo Square,1 as histori- cally it has had such a prominent position in the transatlantic community of New Orleans. It is a place where people from African and Caribbean diasporas still come together on a regular basis for activities such as drum circles, Sunday gatherings and healing ceremonies. My research has focused on contemporary voodoo in New Orleans, and Congo Square is a vital part of the dialogues surrounding these cultures in the city, being a unique site for New Orleans’s African and Caribbean diasporic connections. Florida International University Course Syllabus RELIGIOUS STUDIES RLG 5384: Rasta, Vodou, Santeria Spring Semester 2015 THURS., 5:00 PM-7:40 Graham Center Room 114 Instructor: Dr Albert Kafui Wuaku Office: Room DM 309 Office Hours: Monday, (305) 348-0112 email: wuakua @fiu.edu COURSE DESCRIPTION This course involves a critical historical, socio-anthropological and phenomenological study of the beliefs, rituals, and significance of three Caribbean religions. These are Vodou, Santeria, the Rastafari movement, and their extensions in the United States and other parts of the globe. We will explore the historical foundations and the salient cosmologies and ritual forms of these religions and examine critically their roles in the shaping of the histories and cultures of their Caribbean communities and the extensions in the United States and other parts of the globe. The mix of political, religious, social and historical forces in shaping Caribbean societies calls for a multi-disciplinary approach in this course. Throughout the seminar, we will draw on a number of modern and post-modern socio-anthropological-political-historical-religious analytical frameworks for ideas as we seek an intellectual understanding of the relationship between religion and society in the Afro-Caribbean and migrant Afro- Caribbean communities. Pre-requisites: None COURSE REQUIREMENTS Regular attendance at seminar Three seminar presentations based on the readings. The format will be discussed in class. Final research paper on a topic to be decided after consulting with the professor. The epiphany of Lasirenn marked an initiation rite for me, an awakening that this essay seeks to promote. Reader, beware of the seductive calling of the mermaid! You still have time to put down this article and avoid succumbing to her powerful knowledge and wisdom, to konesans. Seeing that you have bravely decided to traverse the dangerous crossroads, the Kalfou Dangère, you are ready to receive the message of this female water Deity who goes by many different names throughout the religions of the African Diaspora: Mami Wata in Beninian Vodou, Yemayá in Cuban Santería, Iemanjá in Brazilian Candomblé, and Maman Dlo in the folklore and legend of the Eastern Caribbean. In Haitian Vodou, this lwa is known as Lasirenn, the supreme deity of the oceans. Her altars are decorated with seashells, sand, and starfish. Her devotees glow in satin blue fabric and foamy white lace as they beautify themselves to mirror their goddess. The varied spelling here is significant. The term Voudon or Vodún is used to recognize the most untainted religious practices that are indigenous to West Africa. Vodou, then, is a specific reference to the syncretized practices of Haiti. Voodoo refers the Americanized practice of African- based spirituality, most often associated with Louisiana. 3. In Equiano’s narrative, he makes reference to a conjure woman figure beckon- ing to him in his dream. Within days, he goes to see the very same “fortune teller,” to use his term for her (111). 4. I construct this term from Audre Lorde’s concept of biomythography, as discussed in Tate’s Black Women Writers at Work (115). 5. Farah Jasmine Griffin creates the Ancestor/stranger paradigm in her study of the African American migration narrative, Who Set you Flowin’?:The African American Migration Narrative. Griffin builds her idea from Morrison’s discus- sion of the Ancestor in the essay “Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation.” 6. Elizabeth McHenry discusses the rise of the New Negro and literary societies and how both affected black folk culture. See especially chapters 1 and 2. 7. ABSTRACT Title of Document: NOU LA, WE HERE: REMEMBRANCE AND POWER IN THE ARTS OF HAITIAN VODOU Leslie Anne Brice, Doctor of Philosophy, 2007 Directed By: Professor Sally Promey, Department of Art History and Archaeology Haitian Vodou is vast, accumulative, and constantly in flux, drawing from many sources and traditions as it adapts to changes in the world, as well as to the needs and imaginations of its adherents. With its origins in west and central Africa, along with the strategies for transformation that are at the heart of many religions there, Vodou developed into its current form as a response to forced transatlantic migration, enslavement, encounters with Amerindian traditions, Catholicism, Freemasonry, the complications that emerged in the quest for liberty, the consequences of a successful slave revolt, and the establishment of an independent state. It is largely the last three points that contribute to Vodou’s strong military ethos, and with that, Vodou’s focus on liberation. Based on field research between 2000 and 2004, in Washington, D.C. and in Haiti, this dissertation examines Vodou visual arts in relation to Haiti’s revolutionary history, and how the arts articulate related themes of militarism, liberation, and resistance. Central to this study is remembrance, or the active and purposeful remembering of diverse lived experiences that practitioners evoke, express, and promote through visual and performing arts. Remembrance includes the historical, socioeconomic, political, and sacred realities that shape Vodou practice today and thereby provides a larger context for interpreting visual expressions. Equally important to this interpretation is the sacred world, which includes the spirits, the ancestors, and Vodou cosmological principles. -

Cusack, University of Sydney, carole.cusack@sydney. edu.au Keywords: Santeria, Vodun This book is an updated version of Bettina Schmidt’s research which was originally published in German as Karibische Diaspora in New York City: Vom Wilden Denken zur Polyphonen Kultur (2002). While religion is definitely the focus, a range of issues including the nature of culture, identity and language, the experience of diaspora, and the fluidity of cultural categories are inves- tigated. One of the book’s great strengths is its refusal to confine the subject matter to neat categories; simply considering what is “Caribbean” forces an acknowledgement that there were English Spanish, French and Dutch colo- nial presences in the region, that the geographical designation refers to more than seven thousand islands and the surrounding coasts, and the contribu- tion of African culture is vitally important. In the America context, the term “Caribbean” becomes enmeshed with “Hispanic” and “Latino,” and the com- munity shares much with South and Central American migrants generally. Most of Schmidt’s fieldwork was done in the borough of Brooklyn, a vibrant centre for immigrants of all nations, though a small amount of fieldwork was conducted in Manhattan. She focuses in the “urban area as a living space for migrants” and “the process of change” (10). -
