Shorezone Aerial Video Imaging (AVI) Survey Team Unalaska (UA) April 8-14, 2016 CORI Project: 15CRCS0012 (15-31) May 2016 FLIGHT REPORT ShoreZone Aerial Video Imaging (AVI) Survey Team Unalaska (UA) April 8-14, 2016 Prepared for: NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service Alaska, Region Prepared by: Coastal & Ocean Resources Victoria, BC SUMMARY This flight report summarizes the field activities of the ShoreZone aerial video imaging survey conducted out of Unalaska, Alaska during April 8-14, 2016. The survey was conducted by Coastal & Ocean Resources for NOAA NMFS Alaska Region under Contract AB-133F-13-CQ-0038 Order T0011. Table 1 provides a summary of field crew affiliations and responsibilities. The tables and figures on the following pages summarize the extent and location of the 2,325 km of shoreline imagery now available for ShoreZone mapping. A Bell 206 helicopter charted from Egli Air Haul based in King Salmon, Alaska was utilized by the team. Imagery was collected looking at the shoreline from the left side of the aircraft through large open photography shooting windows. A total of 31 HD videos were collected during the survey and recorded to MP4 format (Tables 2). This report contains a summary table and map for each video, illustrating its location, length, and key geographic points. Maps for each video are annotated with representative geographic names, trackline times (hh:mm:ss UTC; UTC time is 8 hours ahead of Alaska Daylight Time) and photo numbers. All videos and photos are supplied on a hard drive organized by video number and named consistently with the ShoreZone image library data schema. A total of 23,257 photos were collected by the team. The GIS data that accompanies this report illustrate the flight trackline positions at 1-second intervals while data and imagery are linked by a date-time code (yyyymmddhhmmss). When processing is complete, all imagery will be posted online at the NOAA ShoreZone web site: https://alaskafisheries.noaa.gov/habitat/shorezone May 2016 Aleutian Island ShoreZone Imaging Survey i TABLE OF CONTENTS SUMMARY ..................................................................................................................... i TABLE OF CONTENTS .......................................................................................................... ii 1.0 Team Unalaska Survey Data 1.1 Videos: AI16_UA_01 to AI16_UA_31 .......................................................... 1 References .................................................................................................. 68 Acknowledgements .................................................................................... 68 Access and Use Constraints ....................................................................... 68 LIST OF TABLES Table Description __________ Page 1 Flight Personnel and Responsibilities ............................................. 2 2 Summary of Video Tapes ................................................................ 3 May 2016 Aleutian Island ShoreZone Imaging Survey ii Team Unalaska Survey Data May 2016 Aleutian Island ShoreZone Imaging Survey 1 Table 1 - Flight Personnel and Responsibilities: Team Unalaska (UA) Crew Member Individual / Affiliation Responsibilities Geomorphologist Carl Schoch Videography, geomorphic Coastal and Ocean commentary, post-flight data Resources, Victoria, BC processing Coastal Ecologist Sarah Cook Digital photography, biologic Coastal and Ocean commentary, post-flight data Resources, Victoria, BC processing In-Flight Navigator Kalen Morrow In-flight navigation, survey planning Coastal and Ocean & coordination, post-flight data Resources, Victoria, BC processing Pilot Sam Egli Bell 206 aircraft operation Egli Air Haul King Salmon, Alaska May 2016 Aleutian Island ShoreZone Imaging Survey 2 Table 2 - Survey Videos: Team Unalaska (UA) Tape Number Location AI16_UA_01 Beaver Inlet, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 02 Beaver Inlet, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 03 Unalga Pass, Unalaska Bay, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 04 Unalaska Bay, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 05 Rootok Island, Avatanak Island AI16_UA_ 06 Avatanak Strait, Akun Island AI16_UA_ 07 South Tigalda Island AI16_UA_ 08 Ugamak Island, North Tigalda Island AI16_UA_ 09 Akun Island AI16_UA_ 10 Akun Island AI16_UA_ 11 Udagak Strait, Sedanka Island AI16_UA_ 12 Beaver Inlet, Sedanka Island AI16_UA_ 13 South Samalga Island AI16_UA_ 14 South Umnak Island AI16_UA_ 15 South Umnak Island AI16_UA_ 16 North Umnak Island AI16_UA_ 17 North Umnak Island, North Samalga Island AI16_UA_ 18 Adugak Island, Pancake Rock AI16_UA_ 19 South Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 20 South Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 21 South Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 22 Makushin Bay, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 23 Pumicestone Bay, Kashega Bay, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 24 South Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 25 South Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 26 Unalga Island, Akutan Island AI16_UA_ 27 Akutan Island AI16_UA_ 28 Baby Islands, Unalga Island AI16_UA_ 29 North Unalaska Island, Makushin Bay AI16_UA_ 30 Portage Bay, Cannery Bay, Unalaska Island AI16_UA_ 31 North Unalaska Island, Umnak Pass May 2016 Aleutian Island ShoreZone Imaging Survey 3 ShoreZone Aerial Video Imaging (AVI) Survey Team Unalaska (UA) April 8-14, 2016 Survey Maps and Video Logs Videos: AI16_UA_01 to AI16_UA_31 Video location map for the April 8-14, 2016 Team Unalaska survey conducted out of Unalaska, Alaska. NOAA COASTAL MAPPING PROGRAM PROJECT COMPLETION REPORT PROJECT AK0502 Western Krenitzin Islands and Northeast Unalaska Island Aleutian Islands, Alaska Introduction Coastal Mapping Program (CMP) Project AK0502 provides coastal zone mapping data of the area around the Krenitzin Islands. This area includes Akun Island, Akun Bay, Tangik Island, Poa Island, Akutan Island, Akutan Bay, Akutan Pass, Unaiga Island, Unaiga Pass, Egg Island, Sedanka Island, Udagak Strait and Unalaska Island from Cape Cheerful through Unalaska Bay and Dutch Harbor to Beaver Inlet, almost to Kayak Cape. The digital cartographic feature file (DCFF) may be used in support of the NOAA Nautical Charting Program (NCP) as well as geographic information systems (GIS) for a variety of coastal zone management applications. Project Design This project was designed per a request from the NOAA Hydrographic Surveys Division (HSD) of the Office of Coast Survey, NOAA, for GIS data in support of HSD operations. Based on an analysis of project requirements and results of a source data search, it was determined that CMP procedures for multiple source projects would apply for this project. Available source data deemed adequate for successful completion of this project included sources acquired between January 2000 and April 2002. Field Operations Routine CMP field operations did not apply for this project based on the origin of the project source data. Aerotriangulation The aerotriangulation task was accomplished by Western Air Maps, Inc. personnel in mid October, 2005. The image files were imported into SOCET SET, Version 5.0, using the DataThruWay, Version 5.0 software. The import process also converted the stored and compressed files to a recognized native SOCET SET format (NITF 2.0) and included supporting data extension files consisting of previously measured sensor model parameters.

i Aleuts: An Outline of the Ethnic History Roza G. Lyapunova Translated by Richard L. Bland ii As the nation’s principal conservation agency, the Department of the Interior has re- sponsibility for most of our nationally owned public lands and natural and cultural resources. This includes fostering the wisest use of our land and water resources, protecting our fish and wildlife, preserving the environmental and cultural values of our national parks and historical places, and providing for enjoyment of life through outdoor recreation. The Shared Beringian Heritage Program at the National Park Service is an international program that rec- ognizes and celebrates the natural resources and cultural heritage shared by the United States and Russia on both sides of the Bering Strait. The program seeks local, national, and international participation in the preservation and understanding of natural resources and protected lands and works to sustain and protect the cultural traditions and subsistence lifestyle of the Native peoples of the Beringia region. WITHROW National Marine Mammal Laboratory, NOAA/Alaska Fisheries Science Center, 7600 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, Washington 98115, U.S.A. ABSTRACT Populations of Steller sea lions, northern fur seals, and northern sea otters declined substantially during recent decades in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands region, yet the population status of harbor seals has not been assessed adequately. We de- termined that counts obtained during skiff-based surveys conducted in 1977–1982 represent the earliest estimate of harbor seal abundance throughout the Aleutian Islands. By comparing counts from 106 islands surveyed in 1977–1982 (8,601 seals) with counts from the same islands during a 1999 aerial survey (2,859 seals), we observed a 67% decline over the ∼20-yr period. Regionally, the largest decline of 86% was in the western Aleutians (n = 7 islands), followed by 66% in the central Aleutians (n = 64 islands), and 45% in the eastern Aleutians (n = 35 islands).

Geology of Umnak and Bogoslof Islands Aleutian Islands Alaska By F. M. BYERS, JR. INVESTIGATIONS OF ^ALASKAN VOLCANOES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY BULLETIN 1028-L Prepared in cooperation with the Office, Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE, WASHINGTON : 1959 UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR FRED A. SEATON, Secretary GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Thomas B. Nolan, Director For sale by the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office Washington 25, D.C. PEEFACE In October 1945 the War Department (now Department of the Army) requested the Geological Survey to undertake a program of volcano investigations in the Aleutian Islands-Alaska Peninsula area. Field studies under general direction of G. D. Robinson, were begun as soon as weather permitted in the spring of 1946. The results of the first year's field, laboratory, and library work were assembled as two administrative reports. Part of the data was published in 1950 in Geological Survey Bulletin 974-B, "Volcanic Activity in the Aleutian Arc", by Robert R. Coats. The rest of the data has been included in Bulletin 1028. The geologic investigations covered by this report were recon naissance. The factual information presented is believed to be accu rate, but many of the tentative interpretations and conclusions will be modified as the investigations continue and knowledge grows. The investigations of 1946 were supported almost entirely by the Military Intelligence Division of the Office, Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army. The Geological Survey is indebted to that Office for its early recognition of the value of geologic studies in the Aleutian region, which made this report possible, and for its continuing support.

PACIFIC SEABIRDS A Publication of the Pacific Seabird Group Volume 44, Number 2 2017 PACIFIC SEABIRD GROUP Dedicated to the Study and Conservation of Pacific Seabirds and Their Environment The Pacific Seabird Group (PSG) is a society of professional seabird researchers and managers dedicated to the study and conservation of seabirds. PSG was formed in 1972 out of a need for increased communication among academic and government seabird researchers. The principal goals of PSG are to (1) increase the quality and quantity of seabird research through facilitating exchange of information; (2) identify and assess the importance of threats to seabird populations; and (3) provide government agencies and others with expert advice on managing populations of seabirds. PSG is headed by an Executive Council composed of members volunteering their time. Members include biologists, wildlife managers, students, and conservationists from the United States, Mexico, Canada, Japan and 12 other countries. PSG annual meetings and publications provide forums where members can share their findings on all research topics relating to Pacific seabirds and discuss local and large scale conservation issues. Abstracts for meetings are published on our website. PSG publishes the on-line bulletin Pacific Seabirds (formerly the PSG Bulletin; www.pacificseabirdgroup.org) and the journal Marine Ornithology (www.marineornithology.org). Other publications include symposium volumes and technical reports; these are listed near the back of this issue. PSG is a member of the Ornithological Council and the American Bird Conservancy. Annual dues for membership are $40 (individual); $30 (student, undergraduate and graduate); and $1,200 (Life Membership, payable in five $240 installments).
