IT’S GAME. SET. MATCH. AUGUST 2018 IN NEW YORK CITY onnors. King. McEnroe. Sampras. Graff. Agassi. Evert. Clijsters. Federer. The Williams sisters. These names evoke visions of great athleticism, fierce competition, and drama…where love means nothing, and records are meant to be broken. CTreasures of New York uncovers the rich and exhilarating history of America’s legendary tennis championship, the US Open. In honor of the tournament’s 50th anniversary, Treasures of New York takes viewers behind the scenes of this globally renowned sporting event famed for its unforgettable matches, groundbreaking innovations, and exuberant New York energy. The final Grand Slam tournament of the calendar year (preceded by the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon), the US Open’s legacy is filled with momentous occasions. In 1968, Arthur Ashe was the first ever US Open men’s singles champion, and the first-ever African-American to win a men’s singles title at a Grand Slam Championship. In 1973 the US Open was the first Grand Slam tournament to award equal prize money to both men and women. And in 1987, Martina Navratilova pulled off a rare feat, winning the “triple crown” in tennis, becoming the champion in women’s singles, women’s double, and mixed doubles. The tournament and its stars also help teach the game they love to kids across New York City communities. Clinics take place year-round, in the shadow of Arthur Ashe Stadium, and work to inspire children to enjoy the game and have fun. Treasures spoke with US Open tennis icons Billie Jean King, Roger Federer, Angelique Kerber (who just won the Wimbledon PREMIERES THURSDAY, AUGUST 23 AT 8PM 2018 tournament), and Stan Wawrinka about their experiences playing in the hard-court tournament, and what winning in Learn more at wliw.org/treasures New York means to them. Now, the beloved entertainment icon, who celebrates her 80th year in show business this year — the longest career in the history of TV — is the subject of Betty White: First Lady of Television. A true television pioneer, she was the first woman to produce a national TV show, the first woman to star in a sitcom, the first woman to receive an Emmy nomination, and the first woman to ever appear on television, given her performance on an experimental broadcast in 1938. “I’ve worked nearly 80 years in television, and finally I made PREMIERES SUNDAY it to PBS,” said White.
