JSOU Report 16-11 IS and Cultural Genocide: Antiquities Trafficking Howard, Elliott, and Prohov and Elliott, JSOUHoward, Report IS and Cultural 16-11 Trafficking Genocide: Antiquities JOINT SPECIAL OPERATIONS UNIVERSITY In IS and Cultural Genocide: Antiquities Trafficking in the Terrorist State, the writing team of Retired Brigadier General Russell Howard, Marc Elliott, and Jonathan Prohov offer compelling research that reminds govern- ment and military officials of the moral, legal, and ethical dimensions of protecting cultural antiquities from looting and illegal trafficking. Internationally, states generally agree on the importance of protecting antiquities, art, and cultural property not only for their historical and artistic importance, but also because such property holds economic, political, and social value for nations and their peoples. Protection is in the common interest because items or sites are linked to the common heritage of mankind. The authors make the point that a principle of international law asserts that cultural or natural elements of humanity’s common heritage should be protected from exploitation and held in trust for future generations. The conflicts in Afghanistan, and especially in Iraq and Syria, coupled with the rise of the Islamic State (IS), have brought renewed attention to the plight of cultural heritage in the Middle East and throughout the world. • James Corden to Take Over 'Late Late Show' for Ferguson
James Corden to Take Over 'Late Late Show' for Ferguson 09.08.2014 After weeks of speculation surrounding Craig Ferguson's possible replacement in his 12:35 a.m. time slot, CBS has officially announced that yes indeed, British comedian James Corden will take his place next year as host of The Late Late Show. Corden is a 36-year-old actor, comedian and TV personality who has appeared in U.K. series Gavin and Stacey and BBC/Hulu's The Wrong Mans, which he also co-created. He also starred in Begin Again, as well as upcoming films One Chance and Into the Woods. Currently he hosts Sky 1's comedy game show A League of Their Own in the U.K. Nina Tassler, chairman of CBS Entertainment, calls Corden "the ultimate multi-hyphenate - a writer, creator and performer who is loved and respected in every medium he touches, including theater, comedy, music, film and television. James is already a big star in the U.K. and he's wowed American audiences on Broadway; we're very excited to introduce his considerable and very unique talents to our network television audience on a daily basis." Tassler told The Hollywood Reporter that the choice was largely based on Corden's broad range in the entertainment business: he has appeared on (and won awards for) TV, film and theater, with a strong social media following thrown in. "In this day and age, certain actors come to your attention and you can't stop following him, and James is one of those talents," said Tassler.

  • The College Chronicle: Writing from Afar
The College Chronicle: Writing From Afar 1 The Editorial A few members of the Sixth Form, in an attempt to provide some continuity in these uncertain times, have decided to come together and, from afar, write a lockdown edition of the College Chronicle. Our aim with this is to provide a focus on new and interesting topics that, hopefully, might act as a distraction from the problems of the world. Writing for the Sixth Form Newsletter has been very much missed by those Year 13s among us who surrendered our activities sessions in the Lent term for extra A Level revision periods, however we now find ourselves displaced from our usual meeting place of the library, and instead have had to work to put this together solely on the “COVID-19 Newsletter gang” group chat. This edition features an abundance of recommendations for entertaining yourselves in this unique time of confinement. If you are tired of watching the news all day, Laila's whimsical Sitcom Selector will let you find a new TV show to binge watch, with so many suggestions for every situation that you’ll be left spoilt for choice. Reading is another great way of passing the time, and Amelia's new series, Isolation Bookshelf, will provide you with interesting analysis on a range of books, some that may well end up being your next read! Matty, making his College Chronicle debut, puts a coronavirus-themed spin on the classic Desert Island Discs in his Lockdown Listening, sharing with us the albums, TV series, film, book and luxury item he would take into lockdown, as well as interviewing others.

  • Monstrous Aunties: the Rabelaisian Older Asian Woman in British Cinema and Television Comedy
Monstrous Aunties: The Rabelaisian older Asian woman in British cinema and television comedy Estella Tincknell, University of the West of England Introduction Representations of older women of South Asian heritage in British cinema and television are limited in number and frequently confined to non-prestigious genres such as soap opera. Too often, such depictions do little more than reiterate familiar stereotypes of the subordinate ‘Asian wife’ or stage the discursive tensions around female submission and male tyranny supposedly characteristic of subcontinent identities. Such marginalisation is compounded in the relative neglect of screen representations of Asian identities generally, and of female and older Asian experiences specifically, within the fields of Film and Media analysis. These representations have only recently begun to be explored in more nuanced ways that acknowledge the complexity of colonial and post-colonial discoursesi. The decoupling of the relationship between Asian and Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage, together with the foregrounding of religious rather than national-colonial identities, has further rendered the topic more complex. Yet there is an exception to this tendency. In the 1990s, British comedy films and TV shows began to carve out a space in which transgressive representations of aging Asian women appeared. From the subversively mischievous Pushpa (Zohra Segal) in Gurinder Chadha’s debut feature, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), to the bickering ‘competitive mothers’ of the ground-breaking sketch show, Goodness, Gracious Me (BBC 1998 – 2001, 2015), together 1 with the sexually-fixated grandmother, Ummi (Meera Syal), in The Kumars at Number 42 (BBC, 2001-6; Sky, 2014), a range of comic older female figures have overturned conventional discourses.
