Célébrant le 150e anniversaire du Canada, je suis ravi de vous souhaiter la bienvenue à la conférence de l’Institut d’études canadiennes de McGill.

La conférence annuelle est au cœur du mandat d’éducation publique de l’IÉCM dont l’objectif est d’étudier les thèmes et les sujets critiques en matière de politique publique. Ces conférences sont des événements non partisans, ouverts au public et conçus pour encourager le débat et les discussions sincères, le tout dans une atmosphère de recherche intellectuelle honnête.

Avec à la Maison-Blanche et le plan de sortie de la Grande-Bretagne de l’Union européenne, la vague de sentiments anti-immigrants qui a alimenté les deux semble s’étendre à travers l’Europe. Au milieu de tout cela, le Canada parait être seul. Dans un contexte multiculturel important et avec une population issue de l’immigration, nous avons créé une société prospère, dotée d'un État-providence robuste, et ce, avec pratiquement aucune réaction populiste comparable à celle vécue dans le sud et outremer.

Est-ce une question d’histoire, de géographie, de circonstance? Avons-nous quelque chose de distinctif dans nos politiques, nos institutions ou notre caractère, ou est-ce que tout cela n’est qu’une illusion? Cette conférence de deux jours portera sur l'apparence et la réalité du statut exceptionnel du Canada parmi les nations occidentales.

Voici ma première conférence en tant que Directeur, et je suis U D E G A S S E M R U E T C E R I D reconnaissant de l’appui et de l’encouragement que j’ai reçus de la part de mes prédécesseurs, du conseil d’administration et des membres de la communauté de McGill.
