In accordance with the provisions of this law, the Paterson Public School District has caused notice of this meeting: Regular Meeting May 23, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. John F. Comm. Sayegh: To those of you who are in need of translation, we have equipment at my far right, so kindly please make use of the technology. PRESENTATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS Performance by Students of Rosa Parks School of Fine & Performing Arts Dr. Glascoe: We have a number of presentations tonight, but we are going to start off with a performance by students from Rosa Parks High School of Fine & Performing Page 1 5/23/07 Arts. I did see Principal Sharon Smith moving about. Did you want to bring on the students, or are they… Comm. Sayegh: I ask that all people with cell phones please put them on silent. (Student Performance by Kenya Atkinson) Dr. Glascoe: Ladies and gentlemen that was Kenya Atkinson who is a senior at Rosa Parks. She has performed in many venues throughout the area, such as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Bergen County YWCA’s Women in Business Tribute, the 2007 District Teacher of the Year Dinner, and the Reverend Dr. Frank Napier, Jr. Scholarship Dinner. Upon her graduation from Rosa Parks, she will be attending Ramapo College and she is going to be majoring in Communications. Again, to Kenya, thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us tonight. Let’s give her another big hand. Recognition of Daniel Cobar, Student at Garrett Morgan Academy, For Receiving the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Science Fair Academic Award Recognition of Tashera Bolds, Student of PANTHER Academy, for Being Named a 2007 Gates Millennium Scholar Dr. Glascoe: Tonight, we are honored to have four exceptional students who us, one who is a former Paterson Public Schools graduate that has gone on to distinguish herself on a national level. First off, our recognition is of Daniel Cobar and Tashera Bolds. Can these two students come down front? I don’t know whether Daniel is here yet because I know he was stuck in traffic. I see Ms. Bolds. I am going to try to give Daniel a few more moments and maybe he will get here. Ms. Bolds is a senior at PANTHER Academy. As you know, she is one of 1,000 students nationwide to be named a 2007 Gates Millennium Scholar. With this scholarship, this aspiring mathematician’s educational finances will be covered for the next 10 years. I think I’ll adopt her. In addition to financial aid, the scholarship also provides mentoring services. Tashera will be attending Syracuse University where she will major in mathematics. Again, ladies and gentlemen, please let’s stand and pay tribute to an outstanding student. I just want to say a few other things about this young lady. She is as beautiful on the outside as inside, as you can see, and I have the privilege of seeing this beautiful smiling face almost every morning because she works in our office and she is a wonderful addition to our office. She brings joy to our hearts when we know how her accomplishments have put her above the rest. So, we love you dearly and do a great job. I don’t see Daniel, but I’m going to try to move on. Daniel is a student at Garrett Morgan Academy. I see Michael Gowdy in the audience, so can you come to the podium to receive this on behalf of Daniel? Daniel is an aspiring engineer. I have my script here, but I am going to detract from my script a little bit and I know the communications folks are about to have a heart attack. I saw Daniel last year in the science fair competition, which was held today right here at John F. Kennedy, and the experiment that he started on a few years ago as a part of his science fair project was beyond measure. This is a young man that has done research that most of us are not up to a level of that and we have gone to graduate school. So this aspiring engineer just warms our hearts. He recently received the NJIT Science Fair Academic Award at the North Jersey Regional Science Fair held in March at Rutgers University. He will receive four awards of $1,000 per year at NJIT, conditioned on acceptance procedures, and we know he’ll just take care of that right away. Daniel also received the first place award in the district’s 05-06 Science Fair and that’s where I first met Daniel. So, ladies Page 2 5/23/07 and gentlemen, we are indeed proud of this young man and we know that he will soar to tremendous heights. Let’s give Daniel a big hand. Recognition of the Accomplishments of Essence Carson Dr. Glascoe: Now I’m going to ask a few other people to join me at the podium. I am going to ask Comm. Al Moody to come down and he is going to represent one of our community groups. I am also going to ask Ms. Jeanette Lyde, our assistant superintendent for our secondary programs, to come down front. Next off, and Comm. Sayegh is here, this school district would like to officially recognize and honor a true Paterson hero – Essence Carson. Just give me a moment to let the goose bumps settle on my neck. I got to hug her, too, and I’m going to hug her again. An accomplished scholar, musician and world-class athlete, Ms. Carson attended the Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational Complex – School 30 before graduating with honors from Rosa Parks High School. She was a mere fourth in her class with a 4.1 GPA. While in high school, she was an all-star athlete at Eastside, playing basketball, volleyball and track. Between excelling at her studies and sports, Ms. Carson somehow found the time to become adept at the piano, saxophone, bass guitar and the drums. As you know, she is currently a senior at Rutgers University and captain of the NCAA Rutgers Scarlet Knights. She led her team to the Final Four, a first time in Rutgers history, and also demonstrated integrity and grace during the Don Imus affair. She is a profile in courage and the Paterson Board of Education is honored, as well as the district, to recognize her. So, ladies and gentlemen, before you stands a role model and I am going to be very honest with you. Tonight, all of this is for us. We get to touch her and we get to see her. We are going to have to put our selfish point of view aside and I am going to put Essence on the spot because what I would like for Essence to do in her busy schedule if she can is to spend a little bit of time to come back to Rosa Parks and Eastside to talk to our students. Let them see you and let them touch you and know that they can aspire to be as great as you are. Comm. Sayegh, I’m going to move aside and let you do the honors. Comm. Sayegh: Ms. Carson, good evening and welcome. Paterson is often referred to as the home of Lou Costello, the home of Larry Doby, but from this point forward Paterson is the home of Essence Carson. You are aptly named. You have the most appropriate name for you and your character. You are the essence of education, you are the essence of integrity, and you are the essence of excellence. Essence Carson, we are immensely proud of you at the Paterson Board of Education. We watched you on ESPN, CNN, and now Channel 76. Ms. Atkinson sang those words with her melodious voice. Essence Carson, you are my hero. Dr. Glascoe issued a charge to you, but I would like to issue a challenge. How about a game of one-on-one? I’ve been working on my jump shot. I’m not going to read the entire Proclamation, but I will read the last line because I think it is most fitting. PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the Paterson Board of Education recognizes the outstanding achievements and contributions made by exceptional members of our school community, the State District Superintendent and the Board of Education of the City of Paterson deem it fitting and appropriate to honor and recognize Miss Essence Carson; and WHEREAS, Essence Carson graduated from the Dr.

To me it is one of the most interesting pools of life I know. There is nothing in Paterson, most people will tell you, save silk mills and five-and-ten-cent stores. It is true. Yet to me it is a beautiful city in the creative sense—a place in which to stage a great novel. These mills—have you ever seen them? They line the Passaic river and various smooth canals that branch out from it. It was no doubt the well-known waterfall and rapids of this river that originally drew manufacturers to Paterson, supplied the first mills with water, and gave the city its start. Then along came steam and all of the wonders of modern electrically-driven looms ….
