Kilpatrick- Dates: July 5, 2011 - August 5, 2011 Time: 8:00 am - 12:30 pm Entering Grades: K - 2 The district general education students in grades K-2, who are recommended for remediation, are selected based upon recent assessment data and are invited to attend the Coordinated Early Intervention Services Program (CEIS). This program is designed to provide instructional support, remedial and behavioral interventions, which will enable students to be more successful in general education classes. An emphasis on Reading and Math strategies will be stressed during the course of the program. Students who are currently attending the CEIS Extended Day Program will be invited to participate and continue their instruction in the summer (2011). In order to determine which kindergarten students should be eligible, input from kindergarten teachers will be sought. Factors such as achievement levels, attendance, developmental levels and/or behavior problems will be considered. Each school library will be staffed with a librarian and a literacy teacher who will assist children in developing literacy projects and will promote pleasure reading during the month of July and during August 15th to August 31st. (From August 1st to August 12th, the staff will perform library maintenance to catalog new materials purchased through the grant.) The Breakfast and theme of this program is “Would you swim in the Passaic River?” Through a lunch served partnership with the Paterson Education Fund, students will engage in infor- mal science activities both in and outside of the classroom and engage in community service activities focused around the Passaic River watershed and its impact on our health. Arts for Kids, Inc. will provide complementary arts programming for students on site at the school. The programs will be en- hanced by educational and experiential field trips to support the curriculum. Research has proven that students learn and retain more when exposed to hands-on experiences with academic content. With this in mind, we have developed Breakfast and a program which will provide opportunities to enhance classroom instruction in lunch served math, language arts, social studies, and science content areas while enriching the stu- dents’ understanding and appreciation for the arts. The skills are developmentally appropriate and connect to the core content Extended Year standards. The mathematics theme program will be based on The Mandela Project Program a nonprofit project dedicated to promoting peace through art and education. The skills address geometry, fractions, and measurement along with reinforcing the Breakfast and knowledge of basic skills through the projects. Students will be provided with a lunch served hands on experience designed for each grade level. Outcomes will include assess- ments in vocabulary and the project offered unit of study. The MSI Program will give the students opportunities to Breakfast and attend field trips to lakes, oceans, and theaters to provide them with connec- lunch served tions to infuse in their Math and Language Arts activities. The MSI Program will also include special presentations from Free Teens, AAA Map Skills, and Opera Music presenters to enhance the students essential academic skills. The MSI Program will end with a “Celebration of Learning” where students will be awarded certificates based upon their social and academic progress.
