CRUSH | Sugarcoat 2018 CRUSH | Sugarcoat 2018 - CRUSH - Dream Pop, Indie-Band from Graz, Austria Crush is Christina Lessiak | Vocals, Guitar Christian Lach | Guitar Katrin Borecky | Keys, Vocals Verena Borecky | Bass Florian Kolar | Drums Releases 2016 Damaged Goods EP 2017 No Easy Way EP 2018 Sugarcoat LP www.crushtheband.at [email protected] Crush is more than a secret infatuation – it is a matter of the heart. Christina Lessiak, Christian Lach, Katrin Borecky, Florian Kolar and Verena Borecky take their audience by storm with dreamy lightness. Since Crush was founded almost three years ago, the quintet has become the worst-kept-secret in the Shoegaze, Indie rock and Dream pop sphere. Their music is a steadily growing mixture of extremely charming pop-gems. It’s as if Beach House got together with former The Long Blondes- leader Kate Jacksons to deliver on the promise that The Pains of Being Pure at Heart couldn’t keep. Two EPs have sufficed to put them on the map and gain substantial airplay. Damaged Goods (2016) and No Easy Way (2017) generated almost half a dozen instant-hits that are simply unstoppable. Their infectious melodies are deliciously naïve and elegant, the lyrics bittersweet and approachable without ever becoming kitsch. As soon as you got to experience Crush on stage, you will realize that they are not afraid to drown their sound in fuzz and reverb. On April 27th, they will release their debut album Sugarcoat, which was recorded in only ten days under the direction of Wolfgang Möstl (Mile Me Deaf, Melt Downer, Sex Jams, you name it) on Numavi Records. Impulsive but with attention to detail – the album tends to coat its romantic vein with barbed wire rather than cotton candy. The subtle anthems link the early R.E.M. to Blondie and Cocteau Twins but manage to cultivate an autonomous sound. Sugarcoat carries on exactly where their first two EPs developed their strong suit: Crush remain curious, act exalted, more mature and perfect their characteristic sound, which playfully challenges its indulging euphony. Sugarcoat flirts with poisonous discord and caresses graceful harmonies, superimposes clouds of synth and wave full of nostalgic melancholy on cunning Post punk guitar attacks and nurses its DIY attitudes. Ten songs float through airwaves for 36 minutes, but never lose contact. They are lonesome heartbreakers and soothing survival kit at the same time. ‘Music for the morning after’, when you’re dancing in the sunshine with tears in your eyes and heartbreak is actually a blissful feeling. By no means is this a fleeting crush – Sugarcoat has the potential to become the love of a lifetime. COBISS.SR-ID 223348492 Julijana Zhabeva Papazova* Independent researcher, Skopje WOMEN’S VOICES IN ALTERNATIVE MUSIC - LISA GERRARD AND ELIZABETH FRASER Abstract: This paper deals with the analysis of Lisa Gerrard’s and Elizabeth Fraser’s vocal styles that promoted a new way of singing on the alternative music scene. Instead of the traditional usage of lyrics in the English language as their mother tongue, they use so called ‘glossolalia’, meaning wordless, or substituting language with a melodic, ex ploratory rapture by their vocal range alone in a couple of octaves. The main points of analysis are the relationships between the vocal interpretation and instruments, music form, main melodic themes, rhythm, accomplished with iconography in the relationship between vocal interpretations and stage performances. Key words: alternative music, Lisa Gerrard, Elizabeth Fraser, vocal analysis, glossolalia Introduction The period of the 1980s brought more diverse and at the same time powerful and expressive female vocals with a wide vocal range as band or solo singers in the area of pop, rock and alternative music such as: Kate Bush, Lisa Gerrard, Eliza beth Fraser, Siouxsie, Tracy Chapman, Enya and Sinead O’Connor. The main aim of this paper is to analyze the vocal interpretation of two singers, members of two important bands as marked in published music encyclopedias and monographs in the domain of alternative or indie music: Lisa Gerrard as the vocalist of Dead Can Dance and Elizabeth Fraser as the vocalist of Cocteau Twins.

  • The Music Column That Wouldn't Die: New Album Reviews
The Music Column That Wouldn’t Die: New Album Reviews. I told myself I was over this, that I had retired from the world of music reviews. I had moved onto bigger and better things (mostly staring at the wall and wondering why nobody calls me anymore). Yet here I am, a mere few months after burning my bridges, giving up on new music and making a world of enemies, back in the game. Did I miss the constant abuse, the being paid in soiled pennies and the lack of recognition which writing this unremembered column entailed? Funnily enough, I did! It was listening to the post punk genius of the new Dry Cleaning record that did it. I thought to myself ‘someone has to take it upon themselves to tell the world just how good this album is’. After a moment of quiet reflection where I drank a glass of lukewarm Ribena to calm the nerves, I decided that that person may as well be me. By JOHN BITTLES So, here we are. Bittles’ Magazine, like some particularly bothersome zombie with a bad haircut and worse breath, has been reborn. And what a re-introduction we have! In this month’s reviews there is the art heavy punk funk strut of Squid, the melancholy dream pop of White Flowers, Thomas Fehlmann’s rich ambiance, the return of living legends The Coral, the skewed pop of Dntel, and Dry Cleaning of course. So, tell all your friends, phone the tabloids, and let us begin… New Long Leg by Dry Cleaning.

  • Marissa Nadler Announces New Album the Path of the Clouds out October 29Th on Sacred Bones & Bella Union & Shares Lead Single/Video “Bessie, Did You Make It?"
August 25, 2021 For Immediate Release Marissa Nadler Announces New Album The Path of the Clouds Out October 29th on Sacred Bones & Bella Union & Shares Lead Single/Video “Bessie, Did You Make It?" Photo credit: Nick Fancher Marissa Nadler announces her ninth solo album, The Path of the Clouds, out October 29th on Sacred Bones & Bella Union, and shares the lead single/video, “Bessie, Did You Make It?” The Path of the Clouds is the most stylistically adventurous, lyrically transfixing, and melodically sophisticated collection of songs in her already rich discography. Gripped by wanderlust while suddenly housebound at the start of the pandemic in 2020, Nadler escaped into writing, and came back with a stunning set of songs about metamorphosis, love, mysticism, and murder. Blurring the line between reality and fantasy and moving freely between past and present, these 11 deeply personal, self-produced songs find Nadler exploring new landscapes, both sonic and emotional. While she’s always been a brilliant guitarist, Nadler challenged herself to expand her palette for The Path of the Clouds, experimenting with synthetic textures that make the album feel untethered from time and space. Nadler also learned to play piano during the pandemic’s isolation, and she composed many of the songs on the album on keys rather than guitar, which further contributed to their exploratory feel. These songs are unmistakably Marissa Nadler’s, but they sound free to go places she’s never gone before. One of Nadler’s distractions during the 2020 quarantine was binging reruns of Unsolved Mysteries. As she watched, she began to notice parallels between many of its stories and her own life.
