It could “only mean one thing – the main road was blocked. I ran from the house, in my sock soles, to see. What met me was a car set sideways across the main road. An off-duty policeman confirmed that there was a bomb left at the police station about seventy yards away, “It’s been there a good ten minutes now.” “Have all the houses been cleared? ” I shouted. “Not sure” was his reply. I saw a few of my neighbours diving into cars at that second. I ran like I never ran before to the house of a neighbour and pensioner, Mrs McCrea. I banged on her door. She peeked out from behind the curtain. I was most likely scaring her but I shouted, “We have to get out of here.” I went in and she was looking for her slippers. I said, “Just pull on anything.” I lifted her under the arms, her facing me and I ran, again faster than I had ever run. We had just got behind the policeman’s car when the bomb went off. I dived to the grass verge, me covering my neighbour. Her squeals will be forever in my ears. Suddenly a loud “whoosh” went past. The policeman was shouting “Stay down, it all has to come down again.” The sound of falling bits of whatever rained down, in through the trees and on the road behind me. As we got up, the policeman pointed in front of us, a wheel with parts of the “ drive and suspension lay about ten yards away. That’s what the “whoosh” was. Thank God we were on the ground, thank God. Burroughs on Railway Street. From 1913 right up until his death in 1960, Herbert set about recording every facet of life in his adopted town as well as beyond. The vast collection, now housed in Belfast are an amazing document of life in the north west during the first half of the 20th century featuring the seismic political events such as the Home Rule crises, WW1, natural disasters, sport, entertainments, as well as the studio portraits which were the stock in trade of the small town photographer.
