    WALES AND IRELAND TRIP MAY 12 TO JUNE 4, 2009 What a coincidence! Meaningless, to be sure - but a coincidence, nonetheless. Our trip to the British Isles in 2009 began and ended one day earlier than our trip to Scotland, May 14 to June 5, 2001. (One can only hope that September of this year doesn't hold the same sort of unpleasant surprise that was visited upon us eight years ago.) OK, so I made a "small" error - we are departing two days earlier, not one. And, OK, so it wasn't much of a coincidence, was it? I mean, a real coincidence - one of excruciating consequence - occurred at the Polo Grounds in NYC on October 3, 1951 when Ralph Branca of the Blessed Brooklyn Dodgers was called in to pitch in the 9th inning and, by coincidence, Bobby Thomson of the Bestial New York Giants happened to come to bat, and, by coincidence, Mr. Branca happened to throw a pitch that the aforementioned Mr. Thomson happened to swing at, and, by coincidence, made contact with said pitch and drove it a miserable 309 feet into the first row of the left- field seats of the absurdly apportioned Polo Grounds, thus ending the Dodgers' season and causing a certain 12-year-old, watching on TV, in Brooklyn to burst into tears. Now that was a coincidence! But I digress. Tuesday, May 12 to Wednesday, May 13 Rather than leaving our car at the Seattle Airport Parking Garage (cost for three-plus weeks $468) or at an airport hotel (about $335) we decide to try the new Gig Harbor Taxi (at $95 each way, including tip).

    CASTLE STUDIES: RECENT PUBLICATIONS – 29 (2016) By Dr Gillian Scott with the assistance of Dr John R. Kenyon Introduction Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the CSG annual bibliography, this year containing over 150 references to keep us all busy. I must apologise for the delay in getting the bibliography to members. This volume covers publications up to mid- August of this year and is for the most part written as if to be published last year. Next year’s bibliography (No.30 2017) is already up and running. I seem to have come across several papers this year that could be viewed as on the periphery of our area of interest. For example the papers in the latest Ulster Journal of Archaeology on the forts of the Nine Years War, the various papers in the special edition of Architectural Heritage and Eric Johnson’s paper on moated sites in Medieval Archaeology. I have listed most of these even if inclusion stretches the definition of ‘Castle’ somewhat. It’s a hard thing to define anyway and I’m sure most of you will be interested in these papers. I apologise if you find my decisions regarding inclusion and non-inclusion a bit haphazard, particularly when it comes to the 17th century and so-called ‘Palace’ and ‘Fort’ sites. If these are your particular area of interest you might think that I have missed some items. If so, do let me know. In a similar vein I was contacted this year by Bruce Coplestone-Crow regarding several of his papers over the last few years that haven’t been included in the bibliography.

EU president’s praise for Catholic teaching welcomed A call from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker for the EU to rediscover its Catholic roots is an invitation for politicians to bring Catholic values to bear in their work, Bishop Noel Treanor (above) of Down and Connor has said. [email protected] Page !1 March 23, 2019 Addressing the spring assembly of COMECE – the European bishops’ conference – Mr Juncker spoke effusively about the importance of Catholic social teaching, upon which the European project was founded in the aftermath of World War Two. “I am a fervent advocate of the social doctrine of the Church. It is one of the most noble teachings of our Church,” Mr Juncker said on March 14. “All of this is part of a doctrine that Europe does not apply often enough. I would like us to rediscover the values and guiding principles of the social teaching of the Church.” Speaking to The Irish Catholic, Bishop Treanor explained that Mr Juncker had been looking back on the achievements and challenges that have marked the European project over the last five years, looking ahead to the future. “He began by emphasising that this European project is inclusive, it doesn’t exclude anybody,” Dr Treanor said. “He quoted Pope John Paul II, saying it has two lungs – east and west – and went on to talk about the European Union being a peace-building project. “He emphasised the importance of that, mentioning that after some 60-70 years of European construction the permanent challenge of building, maintaining, and consolidating peace is something that escapes those who have not had the experience of war, and in terms of our relationships with our neighbours and in terms of internal tensions the importance of building true peace and security is foundational,” he said.

The dominant canopy species is pedunculate oak (Quercus robur), with beech (Fagus sylvatica), ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and european larch (Larix decidua) also present. The subcanopy is mainly formed by hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), holly (Ilex aquifolium) and crab apple (Malus sylvestris). The sparse shrub layer consists of Calluna vulgaris, Cytisus scoparius, Ulex europaeus and Juniper communis.

By far the largest section is that devoted to the legal work of Bartholomew Cliffe, Exchequer Attorney, who resided at New Ross. Many members of the Cliffe family were sovereigns and recorders of New Ross (Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, vol. ix, 1889, 312–17.) Besides intermarrying with their cousins, the Vigors, the Cliffe family married members of the Leigh and Tottenham families, these were also prominent in New Ross life (Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland), [op. cit.]. Col Philip Doyne Vigors (1825–1903) was a Vice President of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland.

    Representative Church Body Library, Dublin MS 581 Collection of transcriptions, notes, jottings and some correspondence, mostly relating to the early history of the Diocese of Ossory, compiled by the Rev. James Graves (1815- 1886). Also contains items of archaeological and antiquarian interest compiled by him and others. Late nineteenth-century. James Graves was born in Kilkenny in 1815, and became a clergyman in the diocese of Ossory, having graduated from Trinity College. He soon developed an interest in archaeology, and was a founder member of the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, established in 1849: 'for the preservation, examination and illustration of ancient monuments of Irish history, manners, customs and arts, especially relating to the country and city of Kilkenny. The society expanded rapidly, and published several volumes on church history, architecture and antiquities, including material relating to St. Canice's Cathedral, Kilkenny. In 1869, the society became the Royal Historical and Archaeological Society of Ireland. Graves edited in the Rolls Services: 'A roll of the proceedings of the King's Council in Ireland for a portion of the sixteenth year of the reign of Richard II, A.D. 1392-3' (London, 1877). Graves also prepared a history of the diocese of Ossory, which was never published, but drafts of chapters do feature in his papers (see for example 581/9 below). He was presented with a small living at Inisnag (8 miles from Kilkenny) in 1863, where he died in March 1886. Purchased from Mealy's Auctioneers, Castlecomer, Co.
