Here's how to obtain some of the most commonly used files: DirectX Diagnostic files System Information files Windows System and Application Event log files Installation log files DirectX Diagnostic files DirectX is a programming interface that handles Windows tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video. The DirectX Diagnostic file contains information about this interface and its current status. Here’s how to generate a DirectX Diagnostic file: 1. Hold down the Windows key and press R. 2. In the Run dialog box, type DXDIAG and then click OK. This opens the DirectX diagnostic tool. 3. On the bottom of the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window, click Save All Information. 4. When prompted, save the file to your Desktop with the file name DXDIAG. 5. Click Save. 6. Attach the file when you reply to Support. System Information files The Microsoft System Information tool collects system information, such as devices installed on your computer and any associated device drivers. To generate a System Information file: 1. Hold down the Windows key and press R. 2. In the Run dialog box, type MSINFO32 and then click OK. This opens the System Information diagnostic panel. 3. In the menu bar on the left, click File, and then click Save. This will prompt you to choose a location to save the file. -

Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power. -

WORK EXPERIENCE December 2011 to Present: Psyonix I am currently working at Psyonix, a San Diego based game company, doing lighting and FX work for titles using the Unreal 3 Engine. Duties include: Working with the Art Director and Environment Artists to light levels per specification Using Unreal's Lightmass global illumination system for baked and dynamic lights Re-creating lightmap uv's (second uv set) where needed on lightmapped objects Creation, placement, and adjustment of lightmapped and real-time lights Creation and placement of Special Effects using Unreal's Cascade particle system I needed to rapidly get up to speed with the Unreal Engine, which I had never worked with before April 2004 to July 2011 (7 years, 3 months): Insomniac Games I was initially hired at Insomniac as a Visual FX artist, and worked with programmers to develop the tools needed to create FX for our proprietary game engine. The need later arose to do the same thing with the lighting, and I again worked with the programmers to develop a lighting pipeline for the new engine. Set tens of thousands of years in the future, the saga chronicles a civilization which has banned computers but has also developed advanced technology and mental and physical abilities through physical training, eugenics and the use of the drug melange. Specialized groups of individuals have aligned themselves in organizations focusing on specific abilities, technology and goals. Herbert's concepts of human evolution and technology have been analyzed and deconstructed in at least one book, The Science of Dune (2008).[1][2][3] His originating 1965 novel Dune is popularly considered one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time,[4] and is frequently cited as the best-selling science fiction novel in history[.4][5] Dune and its five sequels by Herbert explore the complex and multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology and technology, among other themes. Jared A Lee STS 145 Case Study 3/22/01 The Dune Series The focus of this case study will be the relative success of two PC games, Dune 2 and Dune 2000. The series of games is based on the acclaimed series of novels written by Frank Herbert. Herbert’s novels, some of the most popular science fiction ever written, are set on the desert planet Arrakis. The first book in the series, entitled Dune, tells the story of Paul Atreides, who protects his family from a perfidious plot against his family in which control of the planet is taken from his family, and he is banished to the desert. The novel successfully combines aspects of adventure, mysticism, and politics to form a compelling novel that has been read by millions. In addition Herbert wrote five successive novels that continued the story that was started in the original. Recently, working off some of his father’s files that he found, Brian Herbert, with help from Kevin J. Anderson, wrote a prequel to Dune. The first book will be the story of House Atreides and a second book will tell the story of the evil House Harkonnen. A movie, which was mildly successful, was made in the mid-1980s. In addition a six-hour Dune miniseries was also created. The Dune video game series began in 1992 when both Dune and Dune 2 were released by separate companies. Dune 2 was a hit, as it was one of the first modern real- time strategy games. Previously computers were not fast enough and computer games not sophisticated enough to support real-time strategy. -
