Installing the Game Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition is based on the original game “Dune 2000”, containing numerous gameplay improvements and bug fixes. As such, the game can only be acquired through digital download from Gruntmods Studios. To begin, visit http://gruntmods.com/?page_id=19 and scroll to the bottom of the page. Select the link under “Download Dune 2000:GruntMods Edition” to download the game installer to your computer. All the available links will work, but for this example we will use the “(Direct)” link. NOTE: If the link does not work, you may use the BitTorrent or Magnet links, however these require a BitTorrent client to be installed on your computer. 1 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 1 If asked whether to run or save the file, select “Save”. Figure 2 The download may take some time on a slower internet connection. If your internet connection is slower than 1mbps, you may wish to attempt downloading the game from another location with a faster internet connection and attempt transferring it to your computer afterword, or use the BitTorrent link (which requires a BitTorrent Client to be installed). Figure 3 Note: Depending on your web browser, you may receive a warning indicating the file is possibly unsafe. This is a false warning based on the file type of the installer. Select the actions button, then select “more options”, and finally, “run anyway”. Figure 4 2 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 5 3 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 6 Depending on your version of Windows, you may be asked if you want to allow the program to make changes to the computer. You can opt to not agree to the licence agreement by canceling the installation, however this will cause the game to not be installed. 5 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 8 The next section of the installer will allow you to select the components of the game you wish to install. D2K+ is an optional add-on that allows you to make changes for the game and is entirely optional, but you will need to install the core game. Select the components you wish to install and select “Next”. 6 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 9 The next section of the wizard will guide you in choosing your install directory (where the game files will be stored on your computer). By default, the location will be “(your windows drive)\(Your Program Files)\Gruntmods Studios”. If you choose to modify this directory (Figure 11), it is recommended you create a folder called “Gruntmods Studios” to install the game in, as it will optimize compatibility with other tools and programs from Gruntmods Studios, however it is not required that you do so. Click “Install” when you have chosen your install directory. 7 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 10 8 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition Figure 11 The installer will now begin installing the game. The Story He who controls the spice melange controls the galaxy. The spice is what powers interplanetary travel, and drives much of the galactic empire. Spice is only produced in one place in the entire galaxy, Dune. In the face of a shortage of spice that threatens his rule, the Emperor has issued a challenge to the 3 main houses of the galactic empire. “Whoever controls the spice controls dune. There are no set territories, no rules of engagement.” Each house has amassed vast armies to seize control of the planet, and gain incredible power and favor with the empire. Some suspect however, the emperor is less than honest with the terms of the conflict…….. The Three Main Houses Ordos 15 Dune 2000: Gruntmods Edition The Ordos are seen as a house of deception. Their icy planet is home to the executrix, a group of individuals linked telepathically to a single individual used to communicate their will, known as the speaker.

At: The Planet Arrakis. Submitted to: Reverend Mother Marius Alethea Blasco of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, Proctor Superior. At: The Wallach IX Bene Gesserit School. My Reverend Mother; I pray that this communiqué finds you well, my Bene Gesserit Sisters thriving, and myself, somewhere in the great dunes of Arrakis, alive. In these times, one can only hope. On the following pages, I entrust my report to the Sisterhood. Attend these facts carefully. I have carried out the first stage of my mission, and taken our candidate to Arrakis on the Emperor’s own heighliner. (Unwise, I know. Perhaps I thought my Reverend Mother would appreciate the irony.) We have chosen well. There is great strength in this warrior - can it be? The warrior of the Prophecy, the One who will rise to lead the people to bloody peace? We shall see. The situation on Arrakis is critical. The Emperor is not to be trusted. His demand for the Spice grows unchecked. As my report notes, not only has he challenged three great houses of the empire - House Atreides, House Harkonnen, and House Ordos - to compete for mining rights, but he offers Dune itself as the prize.

  • You've Seen the Movie, Now Play The
“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

  • Organizations of the Dune Universe
Organizations of the Dune universe en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organizations_of_the_Dune_universe Multiple organizations of the Dune universe dominate the political, religious, and social arena of the fictional setting of Frank Herbert's Dune series of science fiction novels, and derivative works. Set tens of thousands of years in the future, the saga chronicles a civilization which has banned computers but has also developed advanced technology and mental and physical abilities through physical training, eugenics and the use of the drug melange. Specialized groups of individuals have aligned themselves in organizations focusing on specific abilities, technology and goals. Herbert's concepts of human evolution and technology have been analyzed and deconstructed in at least one book, The Science of Dune (2008).[1][2][3] His originating 1965 novel Dune is popularly considered one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time,[4] and is frequently cited as the best-selling science fiction novel in history[.4][5] Dune and its five sequels by Herbert explore the complex and multilayered interactions of politics, religion, ecology and technology, among other themes. Young Alia Atreides in front of (from left to right) a Spacing Guild agent, Princess Irulan, Reverend Mother Mohiam and her Bene Gesserit, and Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, from the Dune miniseries (2000) We've a three-point civilization: the Imperial Household balanced against the Federated Great Houses of the Landsraad, and between them, the Guild with its damnable monopoly on interstellar transport. — Reverend Mother Mohiam, Dune As Frank Herbert's Dune (1965) begins, the known universe is ruled by Shaddam IV, the 81st Padishah Emperor of House Corrino, whose power is secured by his control of the brutally efficient military force known as the Imperial Sardaukar.

  • Jared a Lee STS 145 Case Study 3/22/01
Jared A Lee STS 145 Case Study 3/22/01 The Dune Series The focus of this case study will be the relative success of two PC games, Dune 2 and Dune 2000. The series of games is based on the acclaimed series of novels written by Frank Herbert. Herbert’s novels, some of the most popular science fiction ever written, are set on the desert planet Arrakis. The first book in the series, entitled Dune, tells the story of Paul Atreides, who protects his family from a perfidious plot against his family in which control of the planet is taken from his family, and he is banished to the desert. The novel successfully combines aspects of adventure, mysticism, and politics to form a compelling novel that has been read by millions. In addition Herbert wrote five successive novels that continued the story that was started in the original. Recently, working off some of his father’s files that he found, Brian Herbert, with help from Kevin J. Anderson, wrote a prequel to Dune. The first book will be the story of House Atreides and a second book will tell the story of the evil House Harkonnen. A movie, which was mildly successful, was made in the mid-1980s. In addition a six-hour Dune miniseries was also created. The Dune video game series began in 1992 when both Dune and Dune 2 were released by separate companies. Dune 2 was a hit, as it was one of the first modern real- time strategy games. Previously computers were not fast enough and computer games not sophisticated enough to support real-time strategy.
