Welcome to another fantastic year of the Wantage Literary Festival. Our new name and look for our eighth year hopefully more accurately reflects our purpose. We are essentially the same great team of volunteers and trustees now with a Festival Director. Our aim as always is to bring high quality events to Wantage, while working with local schools to improve literacy and literary skills. Not to be missed, charming Irish gardener Diarmuid Gavin, actor/comedian Miles Jupp, Neurosurgeon Henry Marsh, BBC Breakfast’s Louise Minchin and a host of historians readily recognisable from the television and newspapers. Fiction fans have again a wealth of talent to choose from including Lucy Atkins, Mick Herron and Nicola Cornick. Families will be enthralled by Nick Cope’s musical storytelling and kept entertained for hours at the museums free Roald Dahl event! Literary Cocktails, 10 Gins and Suffragette Afternoon Tea will add to the exciting week! • St. George's School Windsor Castle Association CHRONICLE 2019
St. George’s School Windsor Castle Association CHRONICLE 2019 Welcome to another edition of the Chronicle, one that is likely to be the last. In years gone by Old Pupils’ news used to be included in the Chronicle as part of the school’s summary of each term. At the end of the last century, this section migrated to the newly School Magazine but by the beginning of this century disappeared from view giving rise to the rebirth of The Chronicle. Proving that there is nothing new under the sun, from next year the two publications will be reunited as part of the drive under way to integrate alumni matters within the daily operation of the school. This is a very welcome development and one that comes early in our new Headmaster’s tenure. William and Catherine Goldsmith joined St George’s in January of this year and have right from the beginning been kind and interested hosts to the Association Committee. I hope that you get to meet them both in the near future and hear William’s hopes and plans for the school. It is perhaps an opportune moment to remind ourselves the objects of the Association as with the arrival of a new Headmaster I am sure we will all wish to ensure he receives our support and encouragement as he charts the path ahead: The objects shall be to encourage Members to keep in touch with each other and with the School. Members shall also be encouraged to give their support to the School, its Choral Traditions, and the Headmaster whenever they can do so.

  • THEATRE in ENGLAND 2012-13 UNIVERSITY of ROCHESTER Mara Ahmed
THEATRE IN ENGLAND 2012-13 UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER Mara Ahmed The Master and Margarita Barbican Theatre 12/28/12 Based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, this adaptation by Simon McBurney is as inventive and surprising as the book’s storyline. Satan disguised as Professor Woland visits Stalinist Russia in the 1930s. He and his violent retinue use their black magic and death prophesies to dispose of people and take over their apartments; most villainy and betrayal in the play is in fact motivated by the acquisition of apartment space. Bulgakov is satirizing the restriction of private space in Stalin’s Russia but buildings are also a metaphor for the structure of society as a whole. Rooms are demarcated by light beams, in the constantly changing set design, in order to emphasize relative boundaries and limits. The second part of the play focuses on Margarita and her lover, a writer who has just finished a novel about the complex relationship between Pontius Pilate (the Roman procurator of Judaea) and Yeshua ha-Nostri (Jesus, a wandering philosopher). Margarita calls him the Master on account of his brilliant literary chef d’oeuvre. She is devoted to him. However, the Master’s novel is ridiculed by the Soviet literati and after being denounced by a neighbor, he is taken into custody and ends up at a lunatic asylum. The parallels between his persecution and that of his principal character, Jesus, are brought into relief by constant shifts in time and place, between Moscow and Jerusalem. Margarita makes a bargain with Satan on the night of his Spring Ball, which she agrees to host, and succeeds in saving the Master.
