(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1
(Dis)Believing and Belonging: Investigating the Narratives of Young British Atheists1 REBECCA CATTO Coventry University JANET ECCLES Independent Researcher Abstract The development and public prominence of the ‘New Atheism’ in the West, particularly the UK and USA, since the millennium has occasioned considerable growth in the study of ‘non-religion and secularity’. Such work is uncovering the variety and complexity of associated categories, different public figures, arguments and organi- zations involved. There has been a concomitant increase in research on youth and religion. As yet, however, little is known about young people who self-identify as atheist, though the statistics indicate that in Britain they are the cohort most likely to select ‘No religion’ in surveys. This article addresses this gap with presentation of data gathered with young British people who describe themselves as atheists. Atheism is a multifaceted identity for these young people developed over time and through experience. Disbelief in God and other non-empirical propositions such as in an afterlife and the efficacy of homeopathy and belief in progress through science, equality and freedom are central to their narratives. Hence belief is taken as central to the sociological study of atheism, but understood as formed and performed in relationships in which emotions play a key role. In the late modern context of contemporary Britain, these young people are far from amoral individualists. We employ current theorizing about the sacred to help understand respondents’ belief and value-oriented non-religious identities in context. Keywords: Atheism, Youth, UK, Belief, Sacred Phil Zuckerman (2010b, vii) notes that for decades British sociologist Colin Campbell’s call for a widespread analysis of irreligion went largely un- heeded (Campbell 1971). -

STUDIOCANAL ACCELERATES ITS DEVELOPMENT in TV PRODUCTION Investments in Particularly Promising Companies in Spain and the UK
STUDIOCANAL ACCELERATES ITS DEVELOPMENT IN TV PRODUCTION Investments in particularly promising companies in Spain and the UK Cannes, April 4, 2016 – STUDIOCANAL is greatly accelerating its development in TV series production by announcing investments in several independent companies that are home to some of the most recognisable European talent in the industry. These investments concern Spanish company BAMBÚ PRODUCCIONES, a company based in Madrid of which STUDIOCANAL is acquiring 33%, URBAN MYTH FILMS in London (20%), and SUNNYMARCH TV also based in London (20%). Each deal includes distribution agreements. STUDIOCANAL already has a strong presence in TV series production via its subsidiaries TANDEM in Germany, and RED Production Company in the UK, as well as its stakes in SAM (Denmark) and GUILTY PARTY (UK). Founded in 2007 in Madrid, BAMBÚ PRODUCCIONES is run by its two founders, Teresa Fernández- Valdés and Ramon Campos. BAMBÚ stands out as one of the most creative TV production companies in Spain, with a slate of more than 10 original, high-quality, and internationally ambitious series. Among them, Refugiados, co-produced with BBC Worldwide, is the first Spanish series shot in English, while successful Grand Hotel and Velvet series have been sold all over the world. Based in London, URBAN MYTH FILMS was founded in 2013 by an experienced team of international producers and screenwriters. Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy were behind the launch of Shine Drama in 2002, and of several international hits series, including Merlin for BBC One. Howard Overman has created and written several hit shows, including Misfits on E4, which won a BAFTA in 2010. -

Ten Years Supporting, Delivering & Promoting the Whole Spectrum of Animation
TEN YEARS SUPPORTING, DELIVERING & PROMOTING THE WHOLE SPECTRUM OF ANIMATION Directors Message Wow – we made it to our 10th anniversary!! Who would have thought it? From very humble beginnings – our first festival in 2004 screened at the now-defunct Rupert Street Cinema in Piccadilly – to LIAF 2013, 10 days at 3 different venues. We have survived - sort of. Over 10 years we’ve received more than 12,000 entries, screened more than 2,500 films, and had some of the most talented animators in the world come and hang out with us. And we’ve had a ball on the way. It’s time to blow our own trumpet. As well as being the largest festival of it’s kind in the UK in terms of films and programmes screened, we have a substantial touring component and we run satellite events all year-round. We’ve screened at festivals, cinemas, theatres and colleges all around the world and in the UK and hopefully we have spread the word that animation is a valid artform that is only limited by the animator’s imagination. In short, our maxim is that in animation anything can happen. Long may this be. There are far too may people to thank here (hopefully you know who you are) but the guidance and immense work-rate of my co-Director Malcolm Turner has to be acknowledged. Way back when in our ground zero - actually in the year 1999 - I still vividly recall that very first meeting Malcolm and I had with our then-colleague Susi Allender in the back garden of our Melbourne flat. -

Then came the Comedy Store and Jongleurs and getting bottled off ta The unneT l, and then a regular slot on Radio 4′s Loose Ends, where he met Joseph Heller, Christopher Lee and Gary Glitter. He did 4 series of ‘The aM rk Steel Solution’, one for Radio 5 and the others on Radio 4, and a radio series about cricket, which provoked a whole page of fury in the Daily Express.
