In 1990, while a student in New York City, I joined the founders of Amanaka'a, an organization launched to bring awareness to the rapid, irresponsible destruction of the Brazilian rainforest. Following the Chico Mendez Campaign, Amanaka'a established Amazon Week in New York. For a decade, it was the largest global event of its type. In 1992, I spent two months in the jungles of Brazil, producing a documentary film about the internal violence against the local rubber tappers. That film, which opened the NGO Assembly of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro that year and later opened the PBS nationwide season in the US, marked an important milestone in my understanding of how far a personal drive for a more sustainable world may go. This drive has led me in many different directions over the years and matured into different activities in all of my undertakings. At ArtLink, we believe that any drive for sustainability starts with self-awareness and develops through understanding the importance of the sustainability and regeneration of cultures. -

A Literature Based Study of Early Housing Units: History, Evolution, Economy and Functions Rummana Khan Sherwani* Muhammad Kamran Ayesha Mehmood Malik Abstract Housing and its evolution constitutes an important study for all councils. This paper limns the encyclopaedic timeline of housing from the times of pre-urban dwellings of nomadic, semi-nomadic, and sedentary agricultural societies to the present day, while focusing on the chunks of a comprehensive architecture, history and anthropology. A detailed literature review made it evident that early urban dwellings were insular and extended around an internal patio. -

ADAPTABLE FURNITURE FOR VILLAGES IN SENEGAL MASTER’S DEGREE IN ADVANCED STUDIES IN DESIGN-BARCELONA SPECIALTY IN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN AUTHOR: HALIMATOU M’BALLO DIAO COURSE: 2020-2021 DIRECTOR: JOSEP MARIA FORT MIR ADABTABLE FURNITURE FOR VILLAGES IN SENEGAL HALIMATOU M’BALLO DIAO ABSTRACT Most houses and rooms in the villages in Senegal lack space since most rooms are used by more than one person. And since there isn’t a space specifically used as a living room, the bedrooms also work as such. That is why the owners of those rooms end up not having enough space to store all their belongings and have all the furniture that they need. This project aims to create a product that works as adaptable furniture for people, mostly women, and their children, who live in the villages of Senegal. We can define adaptable furniture as objects that can be easily moved around, adjusted, and changed, according to the situation. Therefore, I can solve the problem of lack of space while showcasing the traditions of Senegal and the skills of the craftsmen and manufacturers of this country. It is also important that the products will be manufactured in a sustainable and humane way. So, I can pay fair wages to the workers and create a minimal environmental impact. To prove the hypothesis that the villagers of Senegal truly need my product, I made an initial study, analyzing the place and the target user along with a study with similar cases in other countries and similar products that already exist in the market. Following this step, and with the information gathered, I defined what are the parts that my furniture will have, and how each one should interact with the other. -

MATERIAL SENSITIVITY FOR SUSTAINABLE ART PRODUCTION Ellie Barrett INTRODUCTION: SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ART MARKET ‘Sustainability’ is a dirty word in the art world. The term has uncomfortable connotations, linking to individual artist’s career development, the impact of production and fabrication, and the economic value of artworks. Asking about ‘sustainability’ throws up questions about how materials for art are sourced, purchased, processed and, ultimately, how ethical it is to be continuously making objects which are mostly built to last, and must be stored and maintained indefinitely. Because of the plunging moral rabbit hole connected to sustainability, the art world - for the most part - appears to be in a state of strategic ignorance. The sheer mass of work that is churned out for art fairs or biennials; for sale at the enormous expense of the wealthy; or for institutional commissions to fill ambitious public programmes is staggering. Whilst the rest of the world is realising that industrial production is irreversibly damaging the planet, art has managed to avoid the scrutiny that other sectors have been subjected to. Hunger for contemporary art ownership has grown rapidly in the early twenty-first century, as the world’s top earners stockpile wealth with a need to spend it on original products. Artworks made from galvanized steel or cast platinum are fetching substantial sums of money at auction and the ongoing amassing of art objects is showing no signs of slowing, despite the current urgency to deal with the ethics of production. Whilst there is a growing demand, there is a growing need to produce. -

Teaching Sustainability in the Arts Art Methods for Elementary and Middle School Educ 303 Professor Aurora Cortes I. Selection of the course I selected Educ 303: Teaching Art in Elementary and Middle School (Spring Semester 2015) to integrate the concept of sustainability. For Unit 7, my students had to identify how to approach the notion of interdisciplinary education in the arts. As they considered including art as a way of teaching reading, math or science, they also had to think of incorporating sustainability in their art projects. II. Plan to incorporate sustainability into my course As we were getting ready to begin Unit 7, I asked my students to reflect on the concept of sustainability. They discussed the concept and then they came to the conclusion that it was important to engage students’ creative practices with the social and ecological issues facing the world today. Then they posted their reflections in D2L as they discussed the significance of integrating the concept of sustainability in their art projects. I have included a few of my students’ reflections, which express the importance of incorporating sustainability in the teaching of art in Elementary and Middle school. I feel that sustainability is a very important concept to teach our students. Our world suffers when resources are used too quickly to supply. This is not only a great concept to teach in terms of resources, but I also believe it contributes to their development as a person. In teaching students not to waste resources when unnecessary, we are subconsciously training them to realize when they are wasting things or taking to much advantage of offered materials. -

Creative Ecology: Art’s Role in Addressing Environmental and Sustainability Issues in Australia Meade, Michael Academic Director: Brennan, Peter Project Advisor: Dahlsen, John Connecticut College Art & Environmental Studies Australia Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the requirements for Australia: Sustainability and the Environment, SIT Study Abroad, Fall 2008 Abstract Art has embodied the relationship between humans and the natural environment throughout the ages. As this relationship changed, many artists began to address concerns about the ways humans interact with nature. Today, more than ever, there is a need for channels of communication to address the major environmental and sustainability problems of our time. This study examines how art is influenced by environmental and sustainability concerns and the ways in which it responds to such concerns. By investigating how artists, community organizations, festivals and other initiatives encourage public awareness about environmental and sustainability issues, the study explores art’s role in modern Australian society. Through this investigation the study attempts to answer the question of how art can affect socio-cultural or political change. This study was conducted through interviews with artists and directors of community organizations, festivals and research institutes. Also, the study included a survey of people attending an art exhibit. In order to find and establish contacts with these people, I began background research on the internet and in libraries and eventually visited three art exhibits focused on environmental and sustainability themes. In addition, I visited several community organizations and took part in a festival celebrating the environment and promoting sustainability through certain art initiatives. As the culmination of the study, I created an art piece to address my own concerns about environmental and sustainability issues.
