But St. Petersburg’s three centuries have matured its material authenticity, recognizable tableaux and unique urban narratives, chiefly the Petersburg Text. The three of these, intertwined in their formation and development, created a distinctive place-identity. The aura arising from this distinctiveness functioned as a marketable code not only for St. Petersburg’s heritage industry, but also for a future-oriented engagement with post-Soviet hypercapitalism. Reflecting on both up-to-date scholarship and the actual cityscapes themselves, my dissertation will focus on the imaginative landscapes in the historic center of St.

Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy or simply Santa) is a folklore figure in various cultures who distributes gifts to children, normally on Christmas Eve . Each name is a variation of Saint Nicholas , but refers to Santa Claus. In today's North American, European and worldwide celebration of Christmas, people young and old simply refer to the hero of the season as Santa , or Santa Claus. (Wikipedia) Conventionally, Santa Claus is portrayed as a kindly, round-bellied, merry, bespectacled white man in a red coat trimmed with white fur, with a long white beard . On Christmas Eve, he rides in his sleigh pulled by flying reindeer from house to house to give presents to children. To enter the house, Santa Claus comes down the chimney and exits through the fireplace . During the rest of the year he lives together with his wife Mrs. Claus and his elves manufacturing toys . Some modern depictions of Santa (often in advertising and popular entertainment) will show the elves and Santa's workshop as more of a processing and distribution facility, ordering and receiving the toys from various toy manufacturers from across the world.

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Russia’s Cultural Stunner: St. Petersburg R. Daniel Foster · Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020 I miss the Soviet hammer and sickle. When I first visited Russia – then called the Soviet Union – the symbol was everywhere, along with those treacly-romantic billboards of Vladimir Lenin reading to children: the patriarch who would solve everything. As a symbol of proletariat solidarity, the hammer and sickle was terrific branding (peasantry and working-class unite!), a promise of real power to ordinary folk – thank you Bolsheviks. Well, that didn’t work out. Still, if you visit Russia now (or once you can travel again), you will find plenty of working class vibrancy, but alas, few peasants. In fact, compared to my first visit to Russia in 1985, the country has tons more spirited energy and drive. Cultural Daily - 1 / 23 - 05.08.2021 2 St Petersburg’s Winter Palace | Photo: R.
