CONGRATULATIONS, WEBB SIMPSON! – Patience and four mid-round birdies were pivotal in former Nationwide Tour player Webb Simpson capturing his first major title on Sunday. His win in the 112 th U.S. Open Championship was the 16 th major won by a Tour alumnus and the 333rd PGA TOUR win by the group. Simpson played on the Nationwide Tour in 2008 when he had runner-up finishes in Springfield, Mo. and Chattanooga, Tenn.

THREE IN A ROW – The last three major championships have been won by former Nationwide Tour players – Keegan Bradley (PGA Championship), Bubba Watson (Masters) and Webb Simpson (U.S. Open).

7 FOR 12 AT THE OPEN – Twelve current Nationwide Tour members played in last week’s U.S. Open, with seven making the cut. Those seven were (T10), Aaron Watkins (T15*), Alistair Presnell (T29*), Steve Lebrun (T46*), Nicholas Thompson (T51), Jeff Curl (T56*) and Darron Stiles (T59). All seven are entered in this week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open as are the five who missed the cut at Olympic, Paul Claxton, (*), James Hahn (*), Jim Herman and Justin Hicks. As of Monday, the Wichita field featured 23 of the current 25 leading money winners and 89 of the top 100. Note: Asterisk indicates first major championship played.

MIDWEST RUN – This week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open marks the beginning of a run of six tournaments over seven weeks in the Midwest. Wichita will be followed by a new event in Evansville, Ind. (United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club), plus stops in Columbus, Ohio, Omaha, Neb., Springfield, Mo. and Kansas City, Kan. The lone exception is the Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission (July 12-15). Wichita has been a stop on the Nationwide Tour schedule since the Tour’s inception in 1990, along with Springfield, Boise, Idaho and Knoxville, Tenn.

PHSWO ON THE RISE – The Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open has raised its community and charitable profile considerably in the last few years. In 2011, it raised a record $212,000 for 40 local charities. In addition to several pro-ams that support the charity fund-raising component of the tournament, the Open will feature a handful of activities for tournament attendees of all ages, including Epilepsy Awareness Day (see next note).

JEFF KLAUK-INSPIRED EPILEPSY AWARENESS DAY – Friday (June 22 nd ) will be “Epilepsy Awareness Day” in Wichita. The influence to do this comes from ’s personal dealings with epilepsy. Jeff is a very popular past champion in Wichita (2003). Tournament officials have elected to promote epilepsy awareness in support of Jeff. Over the winter, Jeff had epilepsy brain surgery as he fights to get back on TOUR. Purple ribbons will be distributed to players, caddies, staff, sponsors and spectators on the 22nd , with all encouraged to wear purple. “Wichita holds a special place in my heart,” Klauk said. “The fact they are dedicating a day to epilepsy awareness is exciting and humbling. I’m making good progress in my battle with epilepsy and am looking forward to resuming my playing career soon.”

HOME GAME FOR WOODY AUSTIN – Three-time PGA TOUR winner and 2007 President Cup participant Woody Austin lives in the Wichita suburb of Derby. The Florida native will be making his fifth appearance in the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open. He played in the event last year for the first time since 1998 and finished T35. Austin is currently 24 th on the Nationwide Tour money list.

NASCAR’S CLINT BOWYER PAYS A VISIT – NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer will play as a guest of tournament sponsor Hawker Beechcraft in this week’s pro-am on Wednesday. The Emporia, Kan. native has five wins on NASCAR’s top circuit. Bowyer’s car is sponsored by 5-Hour Energy, the same company that sponsors PGA TOUR star and former Nationwide Tour player Jim Furyk.

BIRTHDAY BOYS – Celebrating birthdays this week in Kansas are Craig Bowden (18 th /turns 44) and Charles Warren (21 st /37).

NEXT WEEK – Evansville, Indiana will host the Nationwide Tour for the first time. The United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club will be played June 28 – July 1.
