NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of June 18th PREFERRED HEALTH SYSTEMS WICHITA OPEN June 21-24 Crestview Country Club Wichita, Kansas Purse: $600,000 First Prize: $108,000 2011 Champion: Mathew Goggin 156 players 12 th of 27 events CONGRATULATIONS, WEBB SIMPSON! – Patience and four mid-round birdies were pivotal in former Nationwide Tour player Webb Simpson capturing his first major title on Sunday. His win in the 112 th U.S. Open Championship was the 16 th major won by a Tour alumnus and the 333rd PGA TOUR win by the group. Simpson played on the Nationwide Tour in 2008 when he had runner-up finishes in Springfield, Mo. and Chattanooga, Tenn. THREE IN A ROW – The last three major championships have been won by former Nationwide Tour players – Keegan Bradley (PGA Championship), Bubba Watson (Masters) and Webb Simpson (U.S. Open). 7 FOR 12 AT THE OPEN – Twelve current Nationwide Tour members played in last week’s U.S. Open, with seven making the cut. Those seven were Casey Wittenberg (T10), Aaron Watkins (T15*), Alistair Presnell (T29*), Steve Lebrun (T46*), Nicholas Thompson (T51), Jeff Curl (T56*) and Darron Stiles (T59). All seven are entered in this week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open as are the five who missed the cut at Olympic, Paul Claxton, Brice Garnett (*), James Hahn (*), Jim Herman and Justin Hicks. As of Monday, the Wichita field featured 23 of the current 25 leading money winners and 89 of the top 100. Note: Asterisk indicates first major championship played. MIDWEST RUN – This week’s Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open marks the beginning of a run of six tournaments over seven weeks in the Midwest.

  • WEB.COM TOUR STORYLINES – Week of July 2Nd
WEB.COM TOUR STORYLINES – Week of July 2nd The Web.com Tour is off this week, then heads to the Salt Lake City area next week for the Utah Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission (July 12-15). PETER TOMASULO BECOMES FIRST TO WIN ON “WEB.COM TOUR” – The first tournament played under the tour’s new name, the Web.com Tour, was clearly a memorable one. Peter Tomasulo outlasted David Lingmerth of Sweden in a four-hole playoff to capture the inaugural United Leasing Championship at Victoria National Golf Club near Evansville, Ind. It was the third Web.com Tour win for the 30-year-old Californian and caps a 21-month long comeback from a litany of injuries that includes a broken bone in his foot and a stress fracture in his rib. The latter led to his current PGA TOUR Medical Extension. Tomasulo was playing in only his second Web.com Tour event of 2012. He made one PGA TOUR start in late January. Last Wednesday, Web.com, a Jacksonville, Fla.-based provider of internet services and marketing solutions to small- to medium-sized businesses, replaced Nationwide Insurance as the tour’s umbrella sponsor, effective immediately. There were 280 events played since 2003 with Nationwide as the sponsor. Since the Tour’s inception in 1990, 663 events have been played. One thing everyone in Evansville will want to forget is the record-setting temperatures that reached at least 103 degrees every day. LATE-SEASON BLOOMER !? – As a rookie last year on the Web.com Tour, David Lingmerth missed the cut in eight of his first 11 starts, a period in which he did not have a top-15 finish, and was well outside the top-100 money leaders.

  • UGA Gold Club Award
UGA GOLD CLUB AWARD The UGA Gold Club Award is presented annually to an individual who through significant achievement or unselfish service has contributed to the history and tradition of the game of golf in Utah, and whose personal integrity, sportsmanship, common courtesy, loyalty, and friendship earn him the love and respect of his fellow golfers. 2017 - Linda Olsen 2009 - Keith Hansen 2000 - Ernie Schneiter, Jr. 1991 - Jimmy Thompson 2016 - Reed McGregor 2008 - Joe Watts 1999 - Toni Guest 1990 - Karl Tucker 2015 - Judy Allem 2007 - Parley Petersen 1998 - Gordon Sperry 1989 - Steve Dunford 2014 - Randy Dodson 2006 - Doug Vilven 1997 - Scott Whittaker 1988 - George Marks 2013 - Dr. Pete Randall 2005 - Tony Bermingham 1996 - Lynn Summerhays 2013 - Dave Terry 2004 - Sonny Braun 1995 - Garey Chadwick 2012 - Tommy Sorensen 2003 - Jerry Marks 1994 - Larry Disera 2011 - Kent McCurdy 2002 - Jeff Beaudry 1993 - Mark Passey 2010 - Sherm Hatfield 2001 - Jeannie Goddard 1992 - Marion Dunn The 30th person ever to receive the Utah Golf Association's Gold Club Award believes she was already rewarded by the game, long before now. Linda Olsen is being recognized for her contributions to the golf, most notably helping to build the Bountiful Ridge Ladies Association's remarkable membership. Those efforts may have been designed with some degree of self-interest initially, but her impact has gone far beyond creating an after-work 2017 playing opportunity for herself. The Gold Club Award has a special place in the UGA honors, because of its definition: The award is “presented annually to an individual who through significant achievement or unselfish service has contributed to the history and tradition of the game of golf in Utah, and whose personal integrity, sportsmanship, common courtesy, loyalty, and friendship earn the love and respect of fellow golfers.” That describes Olsen's influence quite well.
