    The Role of Skis and Skiing in the Settlement of Early Scandinavia JOHN WEINSTOCK The Northern Review #25/26 (Summer 2005): 172-196. Introduction Skiing as a modern sport spread from Norway in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to other countries where there was snow during some portion of the year. Many people had read Fridtjof Nansen’s account of his 1888-89 trek on skis over the inland ice of Greenland in his book Paa ski over Grønland, which appeared in Norwegian and other languages in 1890.1 The book helped make skiing a household word. Not so well known is the role of the Sámi (formerly Lapps) in the evolution of skiing. This arti- cle aims to sketch the ear ly history of skiing from its birth in the Stone Age to a period only some centuries ago. I suggest that Finno-Ugrian cultural complexes moved into Fennoscandia (the Scandinavian peninsula) from the east and south in the late Stone Age, bringing skis with them as one as- pect of their material culture. Germanic groups migrated northward into Scandinavia much later on. They too may have brought skis with them, but their skis were not nearly as technologically advanced as the Sámi skis. When Germanic groups came in contact with the Sámi, they profi ted from the latter group’s mastery of skis and skiing.2 Origins of Skiing The roots of skiing go back much further than a century or two. Written sources as early as 211 BC mention skis and skiing. There are rock carv- ings in northwest Russia and northern Norway depicting skiers that are upwards of four thousand years old.

The first surface lift in Austria was built in Zürs in 1937 to suit the growing number of young amateur sports enthusiasts. In the same year, the Galzigbahn became the first cable car on the Arlberg designed specifically for winter tourism.

Both were important factors in the growth of Utah. Both are included in the exciting history of Park City. Silver Mining At one time, Park City mines were some of the richest in the United States! Silver mines, discovered in Park City, brought wealth, power, influence and opportunity to a few lucky men. While most miners remained poor and worked in dangerous conditions underground, a few used luck, hard work and knowledge to become extremely rich! One of these miners was Thomas Kearns. Kearns was a teenager when he left home to seek his fortune in the mines. After arriving in Park City, he first worked as a mucker (a poor worker who shoveled ore into the underground ore wagons). He used his knowledge of mining and ore veins to stake a claim in a mine that he thought might be rich in silver. His hunch proved to be correct, and he became a millionaire! The Silver King Mine, in Park City, provided this Irish Catholic miner with great wealth and power. At the beginning of the 1900’s, successful miners like, Thomas Kearns, changed the image of downtown Salt Lake City by building fabulous mansions on South Temple. The Kearns Mansion, an elegant reminder of Park City’s exciting past, was donated to the state and is now Utah’s Governor’s Mansion.

    A F.A.S.T. HISTORY The history and stories of the Fryeburg Academy Ski Team and skiing in the town of Fryeburg, Maine By: John S. Weston Fryeburg’s Ski Trains: With the town of Fryeburg’s location in the snow belt of the foothills of western Maine, skiing has been a natural part of the town’s winter lifestyle from the early 1930’s. Some of the first known documentation of this history began with the storied ski trains that many western Maine towns established to boost the traditionally slow winter economy. In 1935, the Fryeburg Winter Sports Committee (which grew from the local Kiwanis Club) was established to build and promote Fryeburg as a winter sports destination. The instrument they focused on was the local Maine Central Railroad train that ran from Union Station in Portland through Fryeburg. The idea was to advertise and promote the entire town as a destination for winter enthusiasts from all over and have the train be their transportation. Fryeburg Winter Sports Committee letterhead Among the activities offered were ice skating, tobogganing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ski-jouring (Nordic skiing with dogs), ice fishing, bobsledding, and, of course, skiing. Skiers coming to town were divided by ability. Novices were started in the open pasture on the north side of Pine Hill at the Weston Farm. Intermediates went to the local landmark known as Jockey Cap, and in 1936 two trails were cut at Stark’s Hill for the advanced. A winterized horse drawn sleigh called a “sledge” picked up the travelers at the train station and transported them to the various activity sights or their Jockey Cap toboggan run.

    An Overview of PSIA and PSIA-E PSIA is a professional organization of full-time and part-time ski instructors who are dedicated to reaching the highest levels of professionalism and performance within the skiing industry. The national PSIA organization is an alliance of its nine geographical divisions, and its affairs are governed by representatives of each of those divisions. When you pay your dues each year, you are billed once for membership in two associations, your local division of PSIA and PSIA itself. PSIA’s nine divisions differ from each other in size and geography. They range from a few hundred members in a single state, to several thousand in a multi-state area. Some divisional offices are part time operations, with budgets of only a few thousand dollars; others are fully staffed, year-round business offices with budgets well over $1,500,000.00. Divisional dues are used locally to fund such administrative functions as staffing and maintaining an office, keeping membership records, board of directors and committee activities, publishing a newsletter and manuals, marketing, and supporting educational functions. In general, the divisions provide most of the direct membership services of both associations because they are PSIA’s membership base. In addition, they maintain a personal touch through their events and communications. All divisions generate revenue from sources other than dues. Clinics, exams and educational material sales are examples. Some divisions, such as PSIA-E, have tax-exempt, non-profit education foundations that bring in funds from grants, sponsorships, and corporate or private donations. In contrast to the divisions, with their local focus and high visibility, PSIA’s focus is national and international, and its efforts are often not readily visible to the membership.

Roossien Title: Industry vs. Lifestyle: A Sociological Study of Downhill Snow Skiing in North America Supervising Professors: Ben Carrington & Thomas Hunt Since the year 2000, the price of downhill snow skiing has risen nearly 200%. Over the last five years, this price escalation has picked up, and the price of downhill snow skiing has risen 75%. This change is being driven by large snow skiing corporations who have led a movement of commercialization and consolidation in the industry. Vail Resorts is the largest of these corporations, owning over 50% of the $3.2 billion industry. As the major giant of the industry, Vail Resorts has experienced tremendous financial success as a result of snow skiing’s recent corporatization. However, this corporatization is leading to the severe marginalization and destruction of snow skiing subculture. Due to downhill snow skiing’s foundational dependence on its rich and distinct subculture, this cultural destruction is causing a deterioration of the sport itself. This thesis engages in a sociological study of the modern downhill snow skiing industry, examining issues of lifestyle sport culture, social power, corporate strategy, and cultural impact. The research exhibited herein consolidates the fragmented bodies of lifestyle sport and snow skiing literature, and draws on primary interviews and observational data.

My name is Bradley [R.] Geismar, and I’m here in Rauner [Special Collections] Library on Dartmouth College campus in Hanover, New Hampshire. And today I’ll be interviewing Mr. John [M.] Morton. John, good afternoon. MORTON: Hi. GEISMAR: And thank you so much for coming out here to talk to me today. So to start off the interview, I was wondering if you could give us or give me a little bit of background information on your biography. We’ll start with where were you born and when? MORTON: Sure. I was born probably a little more than an hour south of here in Keene, New Hampshire. I grew up in Walpole, New Hampshire. From a fairly early age—I had the good fortune of living on the top of a hill that was kind of surrounded by cow pastures, and early on, I discovered I really enjoyed the outdoors and specifically skiing. But unfortunately, the little local school that I went to in Walpole had at the time two sports. They had basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. And through junior high school I was really terrible at both of those. But I loved to ski, and I was offered—someone in the town was a graduate of Tilton School, which had a ski team. And so he suggested I look into Tilton, and they actually had a scholarship program for students from northern New England here.
