Link to the lesson Before you start you should know what the current territorial division of Europe is; what the Soviet Union (USSR) was; what the characteristics of the temperate warm continental climate are. You will learn to determine the location of Ukraine on the map of Europe; to discuss the current political situation in Ukraine; to characterize the natural environment of Ukraine; to list the main branches of the Ukrainian economy. Nagranie dostępne na portalu epodreczniki.pl nagranie abstraktu Locaon and division of Ukraine Task 1 Specify the geographical locaon of Ukraine and indicate the countries it borders. Locaon of Ukraine Bordering countries Ukraine is a large country in Eastern Europe – the second largest on our continent, after the Russian Federation. It has an area of over 603 thousand km2, which is almost twice as large as that of Poland. The capital of Ukraine is Kiev. Natural condions Task 2 Describe the natural condions of Ukraine: the coastline, the lay of the land, and the network of waterways. Use geographical atlases and the geography textbook, as well as the e-textbook. Coastline Lay of the land Network of waterways Climat Ukraine is a lowland and upland country with a small share of mountains. These mountains include, among others, the narrow range of the Eastern Carpathians, which crosses the south‐western part of the country along a stretch of about 200 km. The highest peak of Ukraine can be found there – Hoverla – 2061 m above sea level. Another mountainous region in Ukraine are the coastal Crimean Mountains. From the geological point of view, they are similar to the Carpathians – they too were created in the Alpine orogeny and are mainly composed of sandstones, shales, and limestones. Due to their coastal location, they have high relative heights. The highest peak is Roman‐Kosh (1545 m above sea level). On the eastern side of the Ukrainian Carpathians, there are vast, undulating upland areas – Podolia and Volhynia, as well as the Dnieper Upland (on the right bank of the Dnieper River). The central part of Ukraine is covered by great lowlands – the Dnieper Lowland (on the left bank of the Dnieper River), and the Black Sea Lowland (along the sea coast). Another lowland is Polesye, which stretches in the north‐western part of Ukraine, along the border with Belarus. On the other hand, in the east of the country, there is the relatively small and low Donets Ridge. The biggest river in Ukraine is the Dnieper – the fourth longest river of Europe. It flows through the middle of the country from the north to the south, escaping to the Black Sea. Ukraine has a temperate, warm, continental climate. This climate has the lowest precipitation among other temperate climates, and the greatest annual temperature variations. In practice, this means that summers are generally hot and dry, and winters – cold and dry. In the western part of Ukraine, near the border with Poland, there is a slightly milder type of climate, similar to our transitional climate. However, these are relatively high areas, which means that the climate there remains harsh, especially in winter. The warmest weather is recorded in the south, on the Black Sea coast, where the climate has Mediterranean characteristics. Populaon of Ukraine Distribuon of the Ukrainian populaon Source: Wydawnictwo Edukacyjne Wiking, licencja: CC BY 3.0. Ukraine currently has around 45 million inhabitants, slightly more than Poland. However, the population of our eastern neighbors has been steadily decreasing for years – after gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine had more than 52 million inhabitants. This decrease in population is mainly due to the unstable economic situation and poor economic development of the country. Uncertain future discourages young people from starting families and deciding to have children, and often forces them to emigrate. Moreover, on average, Ukrainians live much shorter (68 years) than other Europeans, which results in more deaths. All these factors contribute to a significant negative rate of natural increase and thus a negative actual rate of increase. The net migration rate oscillates around 0. Economy of Ukraine Task 3 Discuss the following issues based on the maps in the e-textbook, using geographical atlases, geography textbooks, and the Internet. Economy of Ukraine: Agriculture (soils and crops), industry (mineral resources and branches of industry). Agriculture (soils and crops) Industry (mineral resources and branches of industry) Ukraine is an agricultural and industrial country. Figuratively speaking, the occurrence of fertile black earths over large areas left no choice but to develop them for growing crops. Large harvests are reaped and sold abroad – Ukraine is presently a significant exporter of wheat, corn, and sunflower. In addition, sugar beets, barley, and other cereals, as well as vegetables and fruit, are grown there. In the south of the country, the climate is the warmest and allows to grow, e.g., grapes, or even citrus fruits. Animal husbandry in Ukraine is also highly developed. Pigs, cattle, and poultry dominate, among which ducks are of high export importance. The Ukrainian industry has developed on the basis of mineral resources. In the Donetsk region, bituminous coal (in the past also brown coal) is mined, and in the area of Kryvyi Rih – iron ores. Ukraine is one of the world’s leading producers of these two raw materials. In addition, manganese and uranium ores as well as small quantities of crude oil and natural gas are extracted. Ukraine, like Poland, is dependent on supplies of Russian oil and gas. Source: licencja: CC 0. The political situation of Ukraine is complicated. The war with Russia continues in the east of Ukraine. On March 17, 2014, the authorities of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea unrecognized by Ukraine announced Crimea as an independent state. Then they asked Russia to join it. On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the recognition of Crimea as a sovereign and independent state. A day later, the new creation became another entity of the Russian Federation. Exercise 1 Source: licencja: CC 0. Exercise 2 Source: licencja: CC 0. Exercise 3 Source: licencja: CC 0. • Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibility of Pleistocene Loess-Paleosol Sequences from Ukraine and Its Paleoenvironment Implications
Geophysical Research Abstracts Vol. 21, EGU2019-365, 2019 EGU General Assembly 2019 © Author(s) 2018. CC Attribution 4.0 license. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility of Pleistocene loess-paleosol sequences from Ukraine and its paleoenvironment implications Dmytro Hlavatskyi and Volodymyr Bakhmutov S.I. Subbotin Institute of Geophysics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine ([email protected]) Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) of the loess-paleosol sequences from Ukraine was analyzed in order to define Pleistocene paleowind directions and to prove the viability of AMS-based paleoclimatic reconstructions, spanning the past 1.0 Ma. For the AMS studies more than 1200 oriented samples were taken from 7 loess-paleosol sections located in the area between Bug and Dnieper rivers, and the Black Sea. Our results indicate normal sedimentary magnetic fabric for almost of all samples, characterized by minimum sus- ceptibility axes grouped in vertical direction. The distribution of magnetic susceptibility axes allows to define main wind directions for different time intervals, which are comparable to regional paleogeographic reconstructions of each unit. An oblate magnetic fabric is prevalent in all horizons. Magnetic lineation, foliation and anisotropy de- gree depend on lithology, having higher values in Late Pleistocene loess horizons of Volhynian Upland sequences in Western Ukraine. The AMS of the loess-paleosol sediments from the Black Sea region is much weaker, than noted in loess and paleosol of Western and Northern Ukraine, comparable to distinguished Chinese loess. The destruction of primary fabric due to pedogenesis has been observed in Middle Pleistocene paleosol layers from Podolian Upland and Dnieper Lowland sections in Central Ukraine.

Accepted: 21.04.2020 The national ecological network is being developed in Ukraine to create pan-European ecological network. The legislative framework is adopted, the network of nature reserve fund objects is expanded, and ecological corridors of national and regional significance are formed. The Dnieper Ecological Corridor is one of the largest ones in Ukraine and has trans-boundary significance. Thus, the priority task is to study flora, fauna, and natural habitats of the region in order to preserve and reproduce the rare components of biotic and landscape diversity. To fulfill these tasks, the Emerald Network was created. It includes territories of special nature conservation significance. The Emerald Network of Ukraine ensures conservation of the most valuable and typical components of landscape and biotic diversity, including habitats of rare and endangered animals and plants species. These areas include natural objects in the valley of the forest steppe part of Dnieper River basin, where there is a combination of reservoirs cascade with the remnants of the Dnieper flood plain and mouth areas.

ZooKeys 821: 1–10. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.821.32250 Abstract The centipedeLithobius proximus Sseliwanoff, 1878 is presented for the first time as a new member of the Polish fauna. This species, originally characterized as a widespread Siberian boreal species, seems to possess high plasticity with regards to environmental requirements. Its actual distribution range covers several geographical zones where local conditions have allowed it to survive. The present research in the Wigry National Park, northeast Poland, shows that its distribution extends to the ends of the East European Plain embracing the East Suwałki Lake District, where it occurs almost exclusively in the oak-hornbeam forests: in summer it is one of the three dominant lithobiomorph centipedes inhabiting litter layers.

Bot. 29 (2): 191-215 Abstract: The article is devoted to the phytosociological study and vegetation classification of the dry-mesic oak forests in the central and eastern regions of Ukraine. We showed that oak for- ests of the Quercetea pubescentis class have specific northern features in the region and their syntaxonomic position at the level of alliances was not assigned. Syntaxa formed three dis- tinct geographical groups eastward from the Dnieper lowland to the Middle Russian Upland. Ordination, phytoindication, and comparative floristic analysis with other syntaxa from adjacent regions were performed. New associations (Digitali grandiflo- rae-Quercetum roboris ass. nova and Carici praecocis-Querce- tum roboris ass. nova) were reported. Two edaphic subtypes of dry-mesic oak forests (terrace and ravine oak forests) were distin- guished and their floristic features were discussed. BAKHMUTOV1 1Institute of Geophysics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine [email protected] A b s t r a c t Pleistocene subaerial deposits in Ukraine have been paleomagnetically studied in sev- eral dozens of loess-paleosol sequences. In some sections the results were frequently fairly contradictory, for example, different authors placed the Matuyama-Brunhes (M/B) boundary – a key magnetostratigraphic benchmark of Pleistocene – in different stratigraphic horizons even within the same sections (Bakhmutov et al. 2017). Independent investigations concern- ing the magnetic parameters of the rocks and paleomagnetic study of loess-paleosol sections in Volhynian Upland (Boyanychi and Korshiv sections), Black Sea Lowland (Roxolany sec- tion) and Dnieper Lowland (Vyazivok section) by the same experimental procedure for comparing the formation of the magnetic properties for these regions and revealing the magnetostratigraphic markers were obtained by the author. According to new results for Roxolany section the M/B boundary is located at a depth of 46.6 m at the contact of buried soils of Lubny (lb) and Martonosha (mr) horizons (Fig. 1). The M/B boundary in Vyazivok section lies at a depth of 56.2 m in the lower part of Shyrokino (sh) paleosol horizon (Hlavatskyi 2016).

To solve the abovementioned tasks, we have carried out a geoinformation analyses con- cerning the locations of ground water monitoring stations within the largest hydrogeological structure in Ukraine (which is the water exchange basin of the Dnieper River). In the course of the study, a geodatabase has been created that includes digital cartographic layers of the topographic base, hydrogeological zoning under the geological structural, and water exchange principals as well as the surface and groundwater monitoring stations of different aquifers. The obtained results establish the grounds for developing the concept and in- troduce a system of hydrogeological monitoring in Ukraine based on the geo- information approach and integrated water resource management in the river basins. Detecting climate change in Ukraine: trends, prediction and extreme events Anna Bohushenko, Sergiy Stepanenko, and Inna Khomenko Odesa State Environmental University, Odesa, Ukraine ([email protected]) In this study the trends and variations in 25 extreme temperature and precipitation indices defined by ETCCDI, are examined using trend method, probability distribution analysis and spatial statistics for periods of 71 to 137 years for 16 stations evenly distributed in Ukraine. Data on the indices were obtained from www.ecad.eu. Since 1981, temperature has increased by about 1ºC in all stations in question relative to the period of 1945-1980. Analysis of the temperature indices indicates that during the 20th and the beginning of the 21th century there is significant warming which is particularly pronounced in annual mean and annual maximum temperatures. Occurrence of more summer days, warm days and tropical nights and warm spell duration reached the record highest level, and conversely occurrence of frost and ice days, cold days and cold spell duration fall to a record low for the last three decades in the most of study territory. Since 1981, precipitation amount has grown by 30-50 mm relative to the period of 1945-1980 for the most of Ukrainian territory, except Uzhhorod and Uman where precipitation amount has remained the same. For Ukraine average, an increase in maximum daily and maximum 5 days precipitation amount, the maximum number of consecutive wet days, heavy and very heavy precipitation days, and a decrease in the maximum number of consecutive dry days are observed for the last three decades.
