A dramatic mezzo soprano, Dalis was admired internationally for her vocal richness and fiery dramatic presence. Among her most notable roles were Amneris in Verdi's Aida and Princess Eboli in his Don Carlo, as well as Isolde in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde and Kundry in his Parsifal, and Richard Strauss’ Klytaemnestra in Elektra and the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten. After retiring from the Met in 1976, Dalis returned to San José and became a professor of music at San José State University. In 1984, she formed Opera San José, the only resident opera company in the United States. Dalis retired from Opera San José in 2014 and the Opera San José board of trustees selected Larry Hancock to take over as general director. Dalis’s last wish was that there be no memorial service, but she did allow a fundraising concert in her memory. That concert will include: Eilana Lappalainen, Soprano: Lappalainen served as a member of the resident company from 1988 to 1992.

What follows is a guide that we hope you and your students find useful, as we explore Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore. In the spirit of exploration, we have included various lessons that connect Il Trovatore with different subjects of learning. The lessons reference the new Colorado Department of Education’s Academic Standards: specifically, focusing on the fourth grade expectations. This does not mean, however, that these lessons should be limited to this age group. While we would be very pleased if you used these lessons in the exact format provided, we encourage you to expand, alter, and adapt these lessons so that they best fit your students’ abilities and development. After all, the teacher knows their student’s needs best. It is my absolute pleasure to welcome you all back to another season of Opera at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. This is my fifth summer as Artistic Director of “Opera in the 21st Century”. I am very proud of this season. Our opera program continues to grow and expand year to year. This summer, we welcomed 27 participants from all over the world to come and experience opera at Banff Centre. We offered positions to 14 singers, 9 instrumentalists, 2 pianists, an assistant conductor and an assistant director. This is our second season welcoming instrumentalists, which I believe is unique to any opera program that exists. The reason is to foster a new, more theatrical orchestral musician, who is integrated with the action of the music and performance practice. We supported these participants by providing a world class faculty to work with them on all the skills needed to not only survive but thrive in the world of arts in 2018. Our programming this summer is perhaps our most daring yet. Our Chamber Werx series explored the interaction between intimate music and the ways we communicate with an audience in the 21st century. I believe strongly in the need to connect with our communities. We had over-capacity audiences at both our #OperaPub series at the Royal Canadian Legion #26 Colonel Moore Branch in Banff and held community concerts for the Elderly in both Banff and Artsplace in Canmore.
