Yet, audiences throughout the years have felt a fondness for the character of Violetta that supersedes any issues regarding setting. As stated in the program notes for a Metropolitan Opera production, “Our attention will focus on the woman who has been entrusted to the role that is the ultimate test of the lyric/dramatic soprano voice in the Italian repertory.
