Alumni Newsletter WMU Department of Dance December 2013 Dear Dance Alumni and Friends, This fall has been a whirlwind of activity! Before fall semester even began, we hosted two events. In collaboration with DanceWorksFall Chicago, our2013 first ever “Back-to-School Dance Bootcamp” was held the last weekend in August and was a resounding success. The two-day workshop featured technique and repertory classes, an informal performance by DanceWorks Chicago, time for networking, and a mock audition to help students get back into the swing of things for the start of school. Immediately following the Bootcamp, Eddy Ocampo was in-residence for four days to work with Western Dance Project, creating a new work for the eleven company members. The end of September brought Peter Chu and his company, chuthis., to Kalamazoo. Peter created a wonderful new work, One Sound Looking Back, for our students that they performed on a concert with chuthis. at Chenery Auditorium. Next, the 2013 National Choreography Competition winner, Gabrielle Lamb, arrived to create her commissioned dance, Ritournelle, a whimsical work for nine dancers. Other fall guest artists included alumni Marlo Stafford Martin, Stephen Brotebeck, and Kia Smith as well as former faculty member Claudia Howard Queen. Orchesis outdid itself once again with sold- out performances of a wonderful concert in November. The semester closed with performances for packed, enthusiastic audiences at Art Hop & More and Inside This Issue: the Fall Showcase. We’ll be busy preparing for the 2014 Winter Gala Dance Concert as soon as we return from Winter Break in January. Read more about the concert inside this newsletter.

  • Shooting Stars Dance Faculty
Shooting Stars Dance Faculty Katie Freeman Dance Company Director & Choreographer, Ballet, Technique Katie began her dance training at the young age of 5. Early on, her focus was primarily ballet, attending summer workshops with the Atlanta Ballet and Houston Ballet. A highlight of her young dance career was touring for two holiday seasons with the Texas Ballet as the lead role, Clara, in the Nutcracker. After completing high school at age 17, she moved to Los Angeles to expand her horizons and training with a year long intensive scholarship program with the legendary Joe Tremaine. She studied under renowned master teachers such as Jackie Sleight, Doug Caldwell, Marguerite Derricks, Sallie Whalen, Michael Rooney and countless others. She assisted Joe Tremaine and taught the children's program at his professional studio in Hollywood for several years. Although she loved performing, her true calling was "in the studio"... as a teacher and choreographer! In March 2000, she followed her dreams and opened her first studio. She is proud to mentor young dancers and provide them the knowledge and support to pursue their dreams. Nicole Sanchez Dance Company Asst. Director & Choreographer, Children's Classes, Jazz, Ballet, Technique, & Tap Born and raised in Alameda, CA, Nicole started dancing at age 8 under the direction of Pamm Drake. 2021 FALL NEWSLETTER Dance Perspectives Dance, the most physically and mentally demanding subject within the performing arts, is the main theme of the Fabulous Feet Dance Studio and Academy of Ballet. We aim to instill in our students the knowledge of dance technique and style, the physical training necessary for proper body development, a feeling for movement, and the necessary emotional qualities needed for dance. Music association and appreciation, along with rhythm and timing, are also included in our students' training. It is our goal that when our students have left the Fabulous Feet Dance Studio, whether to pursue a career in dance or not, they will have achieved a stronger sense of responsibility, a more developed self-confidence, and a better appreciation for the arts. Curriculum Courses offered by the studio may be taken by the students starting at age three through adult and are available for most levels from beginner to advanced. Most classes are 55 minutes long and some are 85 minutes. Tots Combo: Ages 3-4 & 5-6 years old. A creative movement course for tots, based on the rudiments of dance: basic ballet, introduction to jazz, and development of good rhythm through tap. We offer first year and second year classes. The 3rd year Bridge class is a progression of our Tots Combo classes. Focused primarily on Jazz and Tap, this class is a great option for students who have progressed past the Tots Combo classes, but are not yet ready for the more involved beginning classes. (Placement subject to instructor approval.) Jazz/Tap: Jazz is a free style of dance; involving stretch, isolations, and combinations, influence by the social contemporary dances and music of both today and yesterday.
