Peter Chuthis Peter Chu Artistic Director Peter Chu: Artistic Director / Choreographer / Dancer Originally from Cocoa Beach, Florida, Peter Chu is a distinguished artist who strives to push the physical bounds of dance. He began his training as a competitive gymnast, later nurturing his artistry at Dussich Dance Studio where his evolution into dance began. As a BFA student at The Juilliard School (under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy), Chu was pushed further as a technical mover and began an explosive journey into choreography. Upon graduation, he was awarded the Hector Zaraspe Prize for Choreography. Chu is a remarkable and multi-faceted artist. As a performer, he has danced with BJM _Danse and EZdanza, as the lead in Christina Perri’s Jar of Hearts music video, in Celine Dion’s Vegas spectacular A New Day, and with Crystal Pite’s company Kidd Pivot. In 2008, Chu formed a Las Vegas project-based company—chuthis. His multi-disciplinary dance company combines innovative lighting and sound with live contemporary movement. In 2018, chuthis. presented paper cuts in an empty bag at Zuiderstrandtheater in The Hague, Netherlands, as a part of the Shortcuts XL program, and was the company in residence at Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School & Camp. A part of the mission of chuthis. is to provide movement education programs for the next generation of artists. Through the chuthis. Movement Intensive, an annual summer event, and chuthis. Moves, a 2-3 day custom workshop for both national and international dance schools, the chuthis. team fosters technical/artistic development and mind/body familiarity while igniting an adventurous side of dance. Chu has been an honoured recipient of choreographic awards & commissions, including the Hector Zaraspe Prize, A.C.E. Capezio Award, & Hubbard Street Dance International Commission Project. He was also named a Blodgett Distinguished Artist by Harvard University for 2018. They performed Chu's beautiful choreography—singly, in pairs, and as a grand ensemble that alternately suggested a primal rite and the inexorable motion of waves. The dancing was uniformly superb." — Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun Times "[Space, In Perspective] challenges norms, but also brings the audience up close and personal with groundbreaking art. The final act's on-stage choreography is mind bending, even if it wasn't just a piece of white tape separating you from the dancers." — Michelle Meywes Kopeny, Chicagoist “Peter Chu is that rare performer who can dance with one foot in the commercial world and the other squarely in the artistic. No, wait: that’s not exactly right. Chu is the even rarer performer for whom the two worlds meld into one.” — The Georgia Straight “Chu’s piece, full of sharp movements contrasted with an unfolding physicality, has an unearthly quality both robotic and hypnotic.” — Orlando Sentinel regarding Peter Chu’s Hollywood en Pointe choreographed for the Orlando Ballet. “Chu’s choreography is aesthetically pleasing, yet undeniably difficult in nature… I can only hope this show continues to run so everyone can have a chance to be in the audience.” — Dance Informa Magazine “Nothing Sticks… is a work that really marks the promising beginning of a choreographic talent who’s just starting to harness his wild imagination.” — The Georgia Straight “Chu is a torpedo of a mover, seamlessly integrating the syncopation of hip hop with balletic fluidity.” — Dance Magazine regarding Peter Chu’s work that opened the Top 8, Season 9 show of So You Think You Can Dance “Given the opportunity to speak with Peter Chu, insight, brilliance, compassion, and devotion threaded each expression, verbal as well as nonverbal.” — West Orlando News “ A slender, lithe dancer with feet as resilient as his spine, locks and pops in and out of position with ribbon fluidity.” — The New York Times regarding Peter Chu’s performance in Kidd Pivot’s The You Show “…he gives complete illusion that he is a marionette danced by the puppeteer. The duet is so spectacular, his control of his body so masterful, that audible gasps and ahhs escaped from the audience.” — Portland Monthly Magazine regarding Peter Chu’s performance in Kidd Pivot’s Dark Matters Company Profile: chuthis. is a not-for-profit § 501(c)(3) Las Vegas project-based dance company which showcases the work of Artistic Director and Choreographer Peter Chu and his renowned collaborators. chuthis. promotes cutting edge contemporary dance that pushes the physical boundaries of movement with sharp expanding, contracting, and undulating liquid-like energy, enmeshed in striking imagery to provoke thought. chuthis. provides movement intensives & customized workshops both nationally and internationally. • Juilliard Dance
Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert 2019 Welcome to Juilliard Dance Senior Graduation Concert 2019 Tonight, you will experience the culmination of a transformative four-year journey for the senior class of Juilliard Dance. Through rigorous physical training and artistic and intellectual exploration, all of the fourth-year dancers have expanded the possibilities of their movement abilities, stretching beyond what they thought possible when entering the program as freshmen. They have accepted the challenge of what it means to be a generous citizen artist and hold that responsibility close to their hearts. Chosen by the dancers, the solos and duets presented tonight have been commissioned for this evening or acquired from existing repertory and staged for this singular occasion. The works represent the manifestation of an evolution of growth and the discovery of their powerfully unique artistic voices. I am immensely proud of each and every fourth-year artist; it has been a joy and an honor to get to know the senior class, a group of individuals who will inevitably change the landscape of the field of dance as it exists today. Please join me for a standing ovation, cheering on the members of the class of 2019 as they take the stage for the last time together in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. Well done, dancers—we thank you for your beautiful contributions to our Juilliard community and to the world beyond our campus. Sincerely, Little mortal jump Alicia Graf Mack Director, Juilliard Dance Cover: Alejandro Cerrudo's This page: Collaboration

UPDATED: April 25, 2016 For immediate release: April 21, 2016 Media Contact: Jessica Moore, 970-925-7175, [email protected] ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET ANNOUNCES ITS 2016 SUMMER PERFORMANCE SERIES IN SANTA FE, NM Celebrating 20 Years of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet in 2016 Aspen Santa Fe Ballet celebrates its 20th anniversary with a season filled with world premieres and prestigious engagements around the country. After a busy spring touring schedule that featured highlights such as the company’s debut in Venice, Italy, and the first performance of an important three- year residency at the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge, CA, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will return to Santa Fe for a thrilling summer season! New for the summer are the ASFB premieres of Alejandro Cerrudo’s Little mortal jump and Jiří Kylián’s Sleepless. Cerrudo’s 2012 work, Little mortal jump—his tenth creation for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago where he is choreographer-in-residence—takes a cinematic approach to stagecraft, introducing its viewers to a mysterious place where dancers have dreamlike encounters. Choreographed in 2004 for Nederlands Dans Theater II—and featuring a young Alejandro Cerrudo in the original cast— Kylián’s Sleepless is a tense, enigmatic work for three couples whose movement takes them in front, behind, and even through a large, white backdrop. ASFB’s summer programs also bring back audience favorites from past seasons: Fernando Melo’s thought-provoking Re:play; Cayetano Soto’s vibrant Huma Rojo; Cerrudo’s touching Silent Ghost; and Nicolo Fonte’s celebratory The Heart(s)pace. The repertoire is divided into two programs, A and B: (Program A: July 15-16; Program B: September 3).

  • Alumni Newsletter
Alumni Newsletter WMU Department of Dance December 2013 Dear Dance Alumni and Friends, This fall has been a whirlwind of activity! Before fall semester even began, we hosted two events. In collaboration with DanceWorksFall Chicago, our2013 first ever “Back-to-School Dance Bootcamp” was held the last weekend in August and was a resounding success. The two-day workshop featured technique and repertory classes, an informal performance by DanceWorks Chicago, time for networking, and a mock audition to help students get back into the swing of things for the start of school. Immediately following the Bootcamp, Eddy Ocampo was in-residence for four days to work with Western Dance Project, creating a new work for the eleven company members. The end of September brought Peter Chu and his company, chuthis., to Kalamazoo. Peter created a wonderful new work, One Sound Looking Back, for our students that they performed on a concert with chuthis. at Chenery Auditorium. Next, the 2013 National Choreography Competition winner, Gabrielle Lamb, arrived to create her commissioned dance, Ritournelle, a whimsical work for nine dancers. Other fall guest artists included alumni Marlo Stafford Martin, Stephen Brotebeck, and Kia Smith as well as former faculty member Claudia Howard Queen. Orchesis outdid itself once again with sold- out performances of a wonderful concert in November. The semester closed with performances for packed, enthusiastic audiences at Art Hop & More and Inside This Issue: the Fall Showcase. We’ll be busy preparing for the 2014 Winter Gala Dance Concert as soon as we return from Winter Break in January. Read more about the concert inside this newsletter.

  • Resource Guide for Educators
RESOURCE GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS AILEYDANCE. PHOTO BY JOE EPSTEIN 1 A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “Dance came from the people and must always be delivered back to the people.” - Alvin Ailey Dear Educator, For over sixty years, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has carried out the credo of its founder through performances, school and community programs, professional training of young dancers, classes for the public, and more. To Mr. Ailey, dance was more than a series of steps; it was a means of expressing emotion, of telling one’s story, of honoring the past and rejoicing in what is to come. In fulfillment of his legacy, we strive to offer abundant opportunities for young people to experience the possibilities of dance, no matter who they are or where they come from. We hope the exercises and activities suggested in this resource guide will provide you and your students with a creative and interactive inlet to the world of dance and the work of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, or help you prepare them to attend a dance performance. By bringing your students to an Ailey performance, participating in an Ailey Arts In Education residency, or simply sharing with them the joy and practice of dance, you are engaging the next generation in the Ailey legacy; one expressly dedicated to expanding the minds, talents, and dreams of young people. Thank you for your contribution, and enjoy! Sincerely, Bennett Rink Executive Director, Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation 2 RESOURCE GUIDE FOR EDUCATORS AILEYDANCE.
