  • Alumni Newsletter
Alumni Newsletter WMU Department of Dance December 2013 Dear Dance Alumni and Friends, This fall has been a whirlwind of activity! Before fall semester even began, we hosted two events. In collaboration with DanceWorksFall Chicago, our2013 first ever “Back-to-School Dance Bootcamp” was held the last weekend in August and was a resounding success. The two-day workshop featured technique and repertory classes, an informal performance by DanceWorks Chicago, time for networking, and a mock audition to help students get back into the swing of things for the start of school. Immediately following the Bootcamp, Eddy Ocampo was in-residence for four days to work with Western Dance Project, creating a new work for the eleven company members. The end of September brought Peter Chu and his company, chuthis., to Kalamazoo. Peter created a wonderful new work, One Sound Looking Back, for our students that they performed on a concert with chuthis. at Chenery Auditorium. Next, the 2013 National Choreography Competition winner, Gabrielle Lamb, arrived to create her commissioned dance, Ritournelle, a whimsical work for nine dancers. Other fall guest artists included alumni Marlo Stafford Martin, Stephen Brotebeck, and Kia Smith as well as former faculty member Claudia Howard Queen. Orchesis outdid itself once again with sold- out performances of a wonderful concert in November. The semester closed with performances for packed, enthusiastic audiences at Art Hop & More and Inside This Issue: the Fall Showcase. We’ll be busy preparing for the 2014 Winter Gala Dance Concert as soon as we return from Winter Break in January. Read more about the concert inside this newsletter.

  • Arnold Spohr, C.C., O.M Dr. Arnold Spohr C.C
Arnold Spohr, C.C., O.M Dr. Arnold Spohr C.C., OM, was born in Rhein, Saskatchewan in 1923. He fell in love with dance after seeing a performance of Les Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo in Winnipeg in 1942. Mr. Spohr began his career as a dancer in 1944 at the Winnipeg Ballet, where he was later promoted to Principal Dancer. Mr. Spohr received acclaim for his performances at the Canadian Ballet Festivals. He was part of the Company when it received its Royal designation in 1953. During Mr. Spohr's career as a dancer, more than 20 new roles were created for him. After serving as Interim Artistic Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet after Benjamin Harkarvy’s sudden departure, he became the Artistic Director in 1958. He held this position for 30 years, making him one of the longest-serving Artistic Directors in Canadian Cultural history. Mr. Spohr undertook the reorganization of the Company with energy, leadership, and dedication. He developed the RWB from a small, regional troupe to a world-renowned company. He was instrumental in helping to launch several prestigious dance careers. Mr. Spohr's commitment to the training of dancers led him to establish a professional training programme at the RWB School. Mr. Spohr guided dancers such as Evelyn Hart and David Peregrine through award-winning performances and brought international dancers to Winnipeg. This calibre of talent enabled the RWB Company to successfully stage an increasing number of evening-length classic ballets. Mr. Spohr was integral in developing the style of Company by commissioning works from emerging and established choreographers and creating a distinctive repertoire of contemporary and classical ballets, skillfully blending programmes of short ballets to show off the dancers and appeal to audience tastes.

Education and Outreach Department’s School Matinee Program STUDY GUIDE For Teachers and Students CONTENTS: Page 2……………………………………………….About Nevada Ballet Theatre Page 3……………………………………………….About Theater Etiquette Page 4……………………………………………….About Peter Pan Page 5……………………………………………….About the Artists Page 7……………………………………………….Discussion Topics and Activity Sheets Page 11……………………………………………...Additional Resources About NEVADA BALLET THEATRE The idea to create a professional ballet and dance company based in Las Vegas was the vision of former dancers and co-founders Vassili Sulich and Nancy Houssels. Though Las Vegas was a city with a widespread community of artists, Sulich and Houssels took note that its performers longed to return to their classical “roots,” where they could dance an eclectic and changing repertoire. In September of 1972, Sulich and his dancers performed their first repertory show in the Judy Bayley Theatre at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The response from the community was overwhelming and so with the vision, support and financial backing of Houssels, a volunteer board was established with each of its members giving one thousand dollars to start the state’s first professional ballet company. Nevada Dance Theatre was born. In 1996, the organization received a major grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, and with a donation of land from The Howard Hughes Corporation, plans for a world-class home for the troupe began. Now, indisputably one of the finest dance facilities in the nation, the company’s Summerlin based studio is home to a full-time professional company of dancers and almost 500 students. In 1997, Nevada Dance Theatre was renamed Nevada Ballet Theatre to more accurately reflect the company’s classical repertoire at the time.
