2021 FALL NEWSLETTER

Dance Perspectives

Dance, the most physically and mentally demanding subject within the performing arts, is the main theme of the Fabulous Feet Dance Studio and Academy of Ballet. We aim to instill in our students the knowledge of dance technique and style, the physical training necessary for proper body development, a feeling for movement, and the necessary emotional qualities needed for dance. Music association and appreciation, along with rhythm and timing, are also included in our students' training. It is our goal that when our students have left the Fabulous Feet Dance Studio, whether to pursue a career in dance or not, they will have achieved a stronger sense of responsibility, a more developed self-confidence, and a better appreciation for the arts. Curriculum Courses offered by the studio may be taken by the students starting at age three through adult and are available for most levels from beginner to advanced. Most classes are 55 minutes long and some are 85 minutes.

Tots Combo: Ages 3-4 & 5-6 years old. A creative movement course for tots, based on the rudiments of dance: basic ballet, introduction to jazz, and development of good rhythm through tap. We offer first year and second year classes. The 3rd year Bridge class is a progression of our Tots Combo classes. Focused primarily on Jazz and Tap, this class is a great option for students who have progressed past the Tots Combo classes, but are not yet ready for the more involved beginning classes. (Placement subject to instructor approval.)

Jazz/Tap: Jazz is a free style of dance; involving stretch, isolations, and combinations, influence by the social contemporary dances and music of both today and yesterday. We also offer an Adult Tap class for all ages and skill levels!

Ballet: The mother of dance, which develops good body structure and tone, body placement and technique, strength and flexibility, and is important for the well-rounded dancer. Contemporary is a style of theatrical dance that rejects the limitations of ballet and favors movement deriving from the expression of inner feeling. In addition to our dedicated ballet program, we offer Young Beginning Contemporary and Teen Ballet/Contemporary- these classes are ideal for students who would like to continue their dance education but are not interested in dancing competitively. We also offer an Adult Ballet Class for those who wish to use classical ballet as a form of fun and challenging fitness. Tumbling: By learning the benefits of flexibility, balance, core strength, and body control, inherent in all aspects of tumbling, your child will be better equipped to safely enjoy and excel in all of his or her future athletic endeavors.

Aerial Silks: Silks, also called Fabric or Tissu, are one long piece of fabric attached in the middle to the ceiling to create two long tails. In this class you will learn to climb, invert in the air, and hang upside down. As you increase strength and comfort-level, you will learn sequences, drops, slides, and flips that allow you to descend the fabric with style and grace. Minimum age is 8 years old (unless otherwise cleared with the instructor). Class Procedures

The Fabulous Feet Dance Studio and Academy of Ballet is a place of learning and progression, much like an academic school. Therefore, our operations reflect that of an academic school. Our calendar year operates from September-June and includes Winter Break, Spring Break, and observation of most major holidays. We also offer a Summer Session for those wanting to maintain and/or expand their dance education. In addition to this, we also request that students and parents take into consideration the guidelines observed within an academic school and apply it to our dance studio. Self-discipline, focused attention and knowledge of the curriculum/choreography are just a few requirements for a positive learning experience. We take pride in the progress of our students and have established these guidelines to ensure the best environment for a positive dance education.

We thrive on a prompt schedule; please arrive approx. 10 minutes before your class begins.

There are no refunds for missed lessons. A make-up class is available for $10.00, paid directly to the assistant at the time of the lesson. When absent, please call to let us know that you will be absent so that we may inform the instructor.

Cancellations of classes due to inclement weather will be posted on our Facebook pages and Website. If local schools are closed, so are we. Please do not drop off students unless you have verified that we are holding class

Fabulous Feet Academy of Ballet is the Fabulous Feet Dance Studio’s dedicated ballet program that is offered to recreational, competitive, and pre-professional students. FFAB classes are focused on skills required to progress through a high level of ballet training. Fundamentals such as postural alignment, weight placement and turn out are the beginning stages of a dancer’s development. Once these are achieved, dancers learn how to work through their limbs, and begin transferring their weight into steps and movement. Tempo, agility and muscle control become intermediate steps and turns. As skill and technique progress, the dancers are able to safely execute more advanced steps. Please be aware that students’ progress at different paces. Each child has a natural pace of growth- there is no “right” or “wrong” pace. It takes time and repetition to build muscle memory and can often take more than one year in a class for the muscle memory to set in. Have faith and know that training your child(ren) safely is on the forefront of their instructor’s mind. Ballet training is slow, tedious and repetitive, but essential to form a solid foundation for all other styles of dance. Curriculum

Beginning Ballet: For young dancers' first introduction to ballet training, this class teaches musicality, the wonders of imagination in dance, emotional expression, basic rhythm and counting, beginning stretches and beginning ballet exercises and traveling steps. This class meets once a week and focuses on the building blocks of ballet training. In order for steps to be safely executed, the correct placement, muscle use and posture must become muscle memory. Students will learn how to support their spine through use of their core, use the correct turn out muscles, where to place their weight to activate correct muscle groups, how to work through their feet with safe alignment, stretching through the joints, and muscle use in preparation for steps.

Young Intermediate (Rockstars) Ballet: This class reinforces the skills developed in Beginning Ballet, and builds upon the strong foundation, as students begin to set the fundamentals into action. Tempos, preparation for turns, and more advanced exercises are incorporated into the syllabus. As the challenges increase, two days a week are needed to maintain strength and the muscle memory needed for more advanced steps. For members of our competition team, this class is a requirement for the Rockstars group.

Beginning/Intermediate (C4) Ballet: With the strength, placement and technique gained in the Young Intermediate (Rockstars) Ballet, dancers with postural alignment and consistently engaged turn out are now ready to execute more challenging movement. Combinations and intermediate steps are introduced, muscle memory and technique refined through repetition. Students gain balance through increased center-work, pirouettes, and side barre exercises. Hip placement and pelvic strength begin to develop in this level for extensions and more advanced steps requiring specific muscle use. Stretching draws emphasis, and previously learned steps at the barre are now practiced in center. For members of our competition team, this class meets two days a week and is a requirement for the C4 group.

Intermediate (C3) Ballet: Continuing to build on students' repertoire, all steps previously learned are executed in center combinations. Grande allegro takes forefront, and petite allegro combinations become quicker. Performance presentation is molded in this level. As students become more advanced, students will train three days a week. For members of our competition team, this class is a requirement for the C3 group.

Intermediate/Advanced (C2) Ballet: As the body is now fully trained to begin more intermediate/advanced steps, syllabus continues to move even faster. Extensions now rise above demi-hauteur. Adagio and allegro become longer, finessing students' muscle control, balance and creating endurance. As this is our second most-advanced level, students will meet three days a week to hone their skill. Artistry is developed within movement. For members of our competition team, this class is a requirement for the C2 group.

Advanced (C1) Ballet: This class is dedicated to our most advanced group of ballerinas and ballet danseurs. At this point in training, adagio and allegro become longer, petite allegro combinations become quicker, and pointe work becomes a main focus. Students must be technically efficient and have a high work ethic to safely execute advanced ballet steps. This class meets three days a week and is considered our highest most elite group of dancers.

Pointe: Having developed the necessary ankle strength to properly and skillfully control transitions into relevé at the barre and in center, dancers may begin training en pointe per instructor discretion. At this point in their training, dancers will focus their training at least once a week in addition to their regular sessions to hone their skills and strengthen their muscles. Dancers may begin pointe training near the intermediate ballet level (Please note- this is subject to instructor discretion and this does not apply to all students. Some students may begin pointe sooner, while others may require more training to ensure adequate strength to avoid injury).

You’ll typically find Abbey dancing and singing to Broadway tunes, which is a good indication of her love of jazz. There really isn’t any type of dance that Abbey isn’t excited to try! She is passionate about dance and intends to pursue an education and career in performing arts for voice and dance. Abbey has assisted with a variety of dance classes and been a summer workshop teacher. She is fantastic with kids of all ages but especially loves teaching the littlest students at Fabulous Feet.
